Powerline would now have us believe that if you think Newt Gingrich can win, you're "delusional." I would respectfully suggest that if you are backing Mitt Romney and calling yourself a small government conservative, it is you who is delusional.
Ironically enough, as proof, I'll h/t the video below to ... Powerline: ANATOMY OF ROMNEYCARE. h/t @robpublican on Twitter for the link. For small government conservatives, ObamaCare is the defining challenge of our day. If we do not re-visit and soundly defeat it, the government will expand it's reach and power in new and extremely dangerous ways - dangerous to liberty, that is.
I would also again recommend reading an item by Hillsdale Professor Paul Rahe via Ricochet to understand the significance of all this. True, he also mentions Gingrich; however, Newt has admitted that he was wrong multiple times during national debates. Mitt Romney has refused to do that and has opted to stand by RomneyCare, instead. Per the video below, you will see how impossible it will be for him to successfully fight ObamaCare given his own currently stated position.
I would like to believe that, if Romney is the Republican nominee (as I have long believed he will be), conservative voters will hold their noses and vote against Barack Obama (as I will do). The support that Ron Paul is now drawing in Iowa and elsewhere suggests, however, that this is in no way certain. Even, however, if Romney and the Republicans win an historic victory in 2012, I doubt that anything will be done by this managerial progressive to roll back the administrative entitlements state. If I am right in my fears in this regard, the Tea Party impulse will dissipate; the Republican party will split; the Democrats will return in 2016; and 2012 will be seen in retrospect as just another bump in the long, gentle road leading us to soft despotism.
ANATOMY OF ROMNEYCARE

Quote: "If I am right in my fears in this regard, the Tea Party impulse will dissipate; the Republican party will split; the Democrats will return in 2016; and 2012 will be seen in retrospect as just another bump in the long, gentle road leading us to soft despotism."
Dead on*. Which is why Romney being elected is the worst case result, not Obama. It's a trade of principle for perception - a sellout, in the long term. You can't maintain a Resistance when the big-government autocrat in power is the guy you voted for. So I won't.
(* Although the part about the Republican party splitting won't be so bad, they've had more than enough chances. It's about time for a Conservative Party. The Democrat problem would be solvable, if it weren't for the Republican problem.)

"You can't maintain a Resistance when the big-government autocrat in power is the guy you voted for."
Really? I damn sure can. You DID notice that whole TEA Party thing, right?

I had not read powerline in a long time. I fired up an old pc which had the powerline bookmark. The first article I saw was the anti-Newt one. Basically, they call you a moron (not in the Ace sense) if you back Newt. Then I remembered why I quit reading powerline.
Similarly, I stopped reading NRO corner after the Newt anti-endorsement and the sneaky Romney non-endorsement. I still check it out once in great while when I run out of real blog posts to read. I don't see how NRO can have any credibility to criticize Newt, which seems to be the Corner's full-time occupation. It wasn't just that they ripped Newt, it was the cowardly way they endorsed Romney. But cowardice in endorsing Romney is a fitting way to endorse a coward like Romney, the Eddie Haskel in the race.

Romney hurt MA business with his failed socialist healthcare scheme. Government run healthcare has been a disaster in country after country. Not the hope and change we need!

I'd submit that both Romney AND Gingrich are terrible advocates for limited government. The only genuine and consistent voice is Ron Paul, who everyone keeps trying to do their best to ignore. I guess there was also Gary Johnson, but no one gave him the time of day. Now we're left with jokers like Romney and Gingrich. I've voted GOP in 3 of the 4 elections I have been eligible to vote -- voting Libertarian once -- and it looks like I'll be back in the Libertarian camp this fall. The state of the GOP race is simply pathetic.

Powerline has been promoting Mitt so hard for so long that I wrote powerline several times during the last cycle and asked them if they had been retained by the Romney organization. They would not answer.

This blog seems to be a lot like Fox News, Local news, CNN, MSN, MSNBC, And all other such affiliates.. Except you are on the only Source that truly matters (INTERNET) and we still dance around the only Grindstone tested And Congress approved candidate. As a Veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom I can even see past the smoke and mirrors of the current Regime(s) (yes, I said it, Regime(s)Obama more-so than Bush) Taking the Civil liberties away from the "Common Citizen" EVERY SINGLE DAY we pass more of this Government MANDATE SOCIETY legislature. @ OBSERVER: I 100% agree with what you say and think that "Mitt would only Nibble around the edges assuming he survives the Obama MAchine" But the only candidate that both True Conservatives and Fed-up(pun intended) with Obama Liberals alike, WILL Survive the OBAMA MACHINE.
Afghanistan Veterans for Congressman Dr. RON PAUL 2012!
