Captain Phil Harris -- star of Discovery Channel's "Deadliest Catch" -- died about an hour ago ... sources tell TMZ.
Harris was hospitalized a few weeks ago after suffering a stroke while unloading crabs. He had been doing better until the sudden turn.
Captain Harris died in a hospital in Alaska. He was 53.

He was one of the ones I actually liked on the show (never met him of course, but he seemed to be of a good character.) It's a shame.

Jake and Josh, you and your dad are in my prayers. I'm so sorry for your loss, but I want you to know your dad was a real inspiration to me! I'm the same age as him and I hope I can live life with even close to the passion and love he did. May he rest in peace.

This man did a real good job of crab fishing. Many die every year out there and Phil was one of the best. I saw him around but didn't know him there in Kodiak. I watched the show and he was one of the hardest fisherman that was out there. Too bad he had to go so soon. RIP Phil!
