I don't know, but they obviously are. Seems to me Chris Matthews basically admitted that last night was the first time he was able to look at Obama as simply the POTUS, as opposed to a black man. How that might impact his leg tingle, one can only imagine - assuming you have the stomach for it.
'Fess up, my liberal friends and readers. Are you not now completely mortified by the continued Archie Bunker ruminations on race by MSNBC’s Chris Matthews?

Obama's got one ace up his sleeve.
Pass all my initiatives, or else I'll quit. Then you'll have to deal with Biden.

If you understand that going into the 2008 elections, the liberals thought "If we can elect the first African-American president, Republicans wouldn't dare challenge any of his plans out of fear of being called racists," you can understand where Chris Matthews was coming from Wednesday night.
They saw Barack Obama through the prism of race, because they thought race would be the ultimate trump card in getting their agenda passed. And if you look at how timid most Republicans in Washington were at challenging Obama until late last year, you can understand why they saw Obama as the best way to force their unpopular ideas into law. That's also why the tea party movement drove them foaming mad, because it was ground-up opposition to Obama's plans from a movement with no obvious leaders, and therefore no specific person to tar with the racism brush (MSNBC has done its darndest to tar all tea party-goes as racists -- remember Chris' "nothing but white faces" remark? -- but to most people, that comes across as MSNBC saying you and/or people you know are racist, and demonizing the general public isn't a good way to either win your argument or win ratings).

Funny, I didn't think about race lat night until Matthews brought it up. Here I thought I didn't like Obama because he was arrogant and incapable of leadership.
More fool me I suppose.

Race and the dynamic of the educated, noble liberal benefactor and minority victim/beneficiary is primary to their political existence. The black president is something they've both dreamed about and feared (what if he fails!?), and so is now causing psychic jumble and stress. Outbursts from old guard, flatulent liberals like Matthews are inevitable.

For white liberals, "racism" is their equivalent of "original sin". All whites are automatically racist and must spend their entire lives making amends for being so.

The Democratic Party is obsessed with race. It has to be. Without an overwhelming vote edge among African Americans, the Democrats become an asterisk. Barrack Obama was the most attractive candidate the Democrats have had in years and John McCain was about as bad as the Republicans could do. Yet Obama won the vote by 7% while carrying African Americans by about 95%. Since Blacks make up about 12% of the whole, that gives Obama more than a 10% edge. So he lost among voters who are not African American. Had McCain gotten 1/3 of the African American vote, it would have been very close.
You do the math. Liberals, and their chose vehicle, must keep race in the forefront of any discussion. If African American voted their individual interests instead of reflexively Democratic, the Democrats lose. So Democrats and liberals of all types pick at every scab, block every chance for racial harmony and whine endlessly about racism. It's all about power.
