Via Instapundit reacting to a Kaus item. I believe this is a study a linked a few days ago, or something similar.
In previous waves of immigration, we got assimilation because teachers, politicians, media, etc. believed in it, and thought America as it was an indisputably good thing, and thus acted accordingly. This time, they feel differently, and act differently, and so we get different results.
Multi-culturalism, combined with immigration and birth demographics are on track to end the America we've know for over two-hundred years. That's not a political opinion, it's driven by numbers far more solid than the ones holding up the climate conspiracy.
It also likely has a great deal to do with why blacks never enjoyed much benefit from the civil rights movement of the sixties. It came couched in this same misguided progressivism that is destroying traditional America today. Blacks as a whole, particularly inside the cities where they are captive to the liberal/progressive political machine, weren't told to celebrate equality and become part of America. They were encouraged to stand apart from it.
America will survive. It's just not clear what it's going to look like politically, economically, and so forth. I'm just glad I knew her when and won't be around to fully see what it becomes. I doubt most people on the ground will even understand the changes that are coming. They'll simply see it as the America they know, but may never truly love.

Immigration isn't destroying traditional America. The entertainment industry is destroying traditional America.
In Europe........immigration is destroying traditional Europe. Europe will soon become Muslim unless Christians there stop contracepting and aborting themselves into oblivion.
Provided that these immigrants into America are willing to embrace a values system that's not modeled after Hollywood and are willing to obey the law, I say let them come!

America the name may survive, rather the way Rome survives to this day - utterly transformed as the Roman Catholic Church.
But not so fast: America the Ideal, America of the Declaration and the Constitution, America of Liberty... Dude, the fat lady ain't sung yet. The script is being re-written by the conservative majority. I'm not so sure she'll even be brought on stage: It's more likely that the Gray Lady will *croak* and the "progressive" tide with her. Everything depends on how we act over the next three years.
Thanks - great post - as usual.

I think Europe's immigration problem has been vastly overstated..it is nothing compared to our own immigration problem, though of course if they continue down the same road, it will eventually become so.
Multi-culturalism, and its evil sister, identity politics, is what is destroying America. We've had waves upon waves of immigrants in our history, but they all adapted to American culture. The new waves, not so much.
Our "elites" have disavowed traditional America as too white, too conservative, too rigid, too Christian, too mercantile, too oppressive...and so today we have the wonders of multi culturalism AKA cultural relatavism where it is up to each individual person to decide what they like or don't like about any given culture, and what was once considered to be traditional American values are not only not passed on to subsequent generations but they are actively discouraged and derided.
Yes, "America" as a large country bordered by two oceans with a huge arsenal of weapons and massive economic capital will continue to exist for decades, maybe centuries to come, but like Rome before her, it will be in name only, a shell, a fake, a replica.

Dan,
I'm sure you're going to feel a lot more optimistic after Election Day 2010. Given the likely outcome next year, so-called progressives and mult-cultis will soon discover that America is a very cold and cruel place when it comes to their ways of thinking.
Posted by: MarkJ | Tuesday, December 15, 2009 at 11:11 AM
Mark,
I think you are wrong on that, even an across the board GOP win won't change the overall trends. Bush had a Congressional majority for his first 6 years in office, he squandered it...nothing on immigration, nothing on middle class jobs, nothing on revitalizing our manifacturing sector, nothing on financial reform. He did reduce PC prosecutions at DOJ and stopped the assault on gun rights, but that isn't much of an accomplishment.
The cultural factors are too strongly entrenched, liberal "dogma" is now taught as fact in K-12, there are dozens and dozens of supreme court rulings that support the multi cultural/identity politics viewpoint and so there is no reason for our now largest minority groups to change their tactics.

Undoubtedly, the America that was will not be the America that will be. What America was has been effectively destroyed. What America will be has not yet been determined. That process is now underway.
Posted by: Brad | Tuesday, December 15, 2009 at 11:36 AM
Dan, hope you are feeling better! The fact that you are posting gives me confidence you are.
Anon and Brad, couldn't agree with you more. Things are changing, some for the better, some for the worse, and we are now in a time where things could go bad, very bad, or perhaps they could get better. We shall see, but the cultural factors Anon mentions are likely to continue, and perhaps get worse. The Clinton judge who judicially re-instituted ACORN funding is a case in point. Congress now in effect hasn't the right to control spending. I can't even fathom that particular ruling. Other than the Congress impeaching this idiot judge, what can be done?
Although some of the worse possible outcomes might have been temporarily halted, such as cap-and-trade, and health care reform, they are likely to be continually resurrected until a version is passed. And the deficits might end the game for good. I can't see that far into the future.

Yes things will get bad, but to quote our enimies "never let a crisis go to waste". When the whole lib fantasy land comes crashing down around them we on the right need to be ready to grab back power. When we are back in power we must be ready to ruthlessly root out and destroy every one of those lefties that hurt America.
We need to be ready to arrest judges for treason. That is the key to this. To often the left when they can't get their way democratically will use judges to get around that. We must be ready to arrest these judges, try them for treason, and then carry out the sentence listed in the constitution for that offense. We must be ready to hang some lib judges, we must be ready when we get back into power to declare that many laws passed by the Dems were acts of treason and just simply get rid of them. We need to go through government with a chainsaw and cut out all the diseased lefties without mercy.

One of the worst aspects of the problem is that Spanish speaking people aren't being encouraged to only speak English. When my people came over from the old country, they were told that Norwegian is over, speak English now, and therefore we assimilated. During WW1 there were even laws against speaking the Germanic languages here in the States. But I digress...
The way things are now, Spanish speaking people have their own signs, their own radio stations, their own TV stations. This is causing a cultural rift in the United States like there never has been before. Instead of assimilation they tend to stay in their own circles and never fully understand that the culture that they now live in is supposed to be different, dare I say superior, to the one that they fled in the engine compartment of a Buick. They'll never learn that because they don't have to. What's the incentive? This is leading to two competing countries that just happen to exist on the same soil. They receive one set of information, everyone else gets another. They have one standard of living, everyone else has another. The third world and the first world are now mere blocks away from each other. It’s the exact opposite of assimilation. And the left loves this! They seem to love the fact that cheap, unrepresented, easily exploited labor is flooding into every corner of the country.
The same holds true for the other languages, those people tend to cluster in their part of town. There is no “melting pot”. This puts more and more strain on law enforcement because of the mistrust and the language barrier, and the fact that those people, believe it or not, to some degree sympathize with the criminal element that hides out in their neck of the woods so easily.
And to think that the liberals want to offer them health insurance!
What does this bode for the future of the United States?
Death by 1,000 cuts.

At Ellis Island one of the many wonderful exhibits shows how New Yorkers at the turn of the previous century worked with the newly arrived immigrants to help them assimilate and understand American melting pot culture. (English language classes, insight on "American" fashion, food and social mores which might be different from the old country etc.) At the same time churches and synagogues sprung up to accomodate specific languages and provide`services for the newly arrived Americans, serving as a bridge and lifeline for those populations during the assimilation process and to keep some of the "old ways" from disappearing completely. It was a nice balance and it all worked beautifully for decades and decades.
I am sad by what I see going on around me-- particularly in the big cities. Too much societal/governmental accommodation and not enough immigrant assimilation. Our treasured justice system, among many things good about the USA, is at serious risk.

"rather the way Rome survives to this day - utterly transformed as the Roman Catholic Church."
This helps to explain why the Catholic Church is a political organization rather than religious; hey Catholics, serving two masters ie the Pope and Government, is the reason your institution has gone straight to hell bypassing purgatory.
Here's climate-change fraudster-earth-worshiper POPE Benedict calling "on advanced societies to adopt “more sober lifestyles,” reducing energy consumption and favoring energy-efficient policies."
Posted by: syn | Tuesday, December 15, 2009 at 02:42 PM
More from Pope climate-change-fraudster-earth-worshiper (most likely an original Fister of young boys as well) Benedict:
"Action is more pressing than ever “in the face of signs of a growing crisis which it would be irresponsible not to take seriously,” he said.
Noting that climate change, and resulting desertification, could push millions into poverty, hunger, conflict and displacement, the pope said: “All these are issues with a profound impact on the exercise of human rights, such as the right to life, food, health and development.”
The lie of the Catholic Church using the lie of Science to propel human beings back to the Dark Age-This.is.Evil.

"We've had waves upon waves of immigrants in our history, but they all adapted to American culture."
Not instantly. It took a generation or two.
Posted by: PA | Tuesday, December 15, 2009 at 03:02 PM
It usually took one generation, the children of immigrants were bilingual and their children were fully Americanized and usually only spoke English, as well the first generation immigrants worked hard to assimilate and learn the language. No more, you can now get any number of jobs in the U.S. without speaking more than 7 words of English, and the children of these immigrants can barely speak English because their parents have no incentive to learn and there is an entire class of social services that are set up to ensure that they do NOT have to learn. Very different from previous generations.
I don't think that immigrants should have to "lose" their cultural heritage, this country is all the richer for Italian neighborhoods, Irish parades and German beer festivals, and now, El Salvadoran restaurants and spanish markets, but the traditions and norms of the U.S. MUST take precedence over those of the country of origin in order for things to work, and that isn't happening anymroe.

The Papists and their devilish leader will - and have already, to an extent - knuckle under to the forces of the Islamic Caliphate.
As for America, illegal immigration, the culture wars, and Hollywierd and the Progressive movement's extreme anti-Christian, socialist works are all so many nails in the coffin of the Republic.
Add in a collapsed economy via joblessness, the average consumer being priced out of both home and his access to fuel/oil and a worthless fiat currency ruined by greedy elitist globalists who care not a fig for this nation - and we shall see the transformation of this once great republic one of a few things:
1) A greatly downsized rump-USA (more or less leaving the USA intact east of the Mississippi, with Black and Arab Islamists in the inner cities demanding submission to the Caliphate) with several break-away regions (South California, New Mexico, Arizona, and parts of Texas being occupied by Mexico acting to protect her nationals living in these border lands, perhaps even an outright annexation), the Pacific Northeast, and the Northern Rocky Mtn. states and possibly the IA/NE/Dakota corridor breaking away) much like the USSR broke up along ethnic and geographic lines.
2) A UN/Chinese-assisted military takeover as the globalists enact the various executive orders that will empower FEMA and DHS to more or less take over the government, setting aside the Constitution in the case of a (permanent) emergency. Not quite Red Dawn material, but certainly enough foreign troops that won't have any hangups about shooting uppity Americans who don't like getting their property seized or unreasonably searched.
Posted by: seekeronos | Tuesday, December 15, 2009 at 03:40 PM
I can't agree on the Islamic Caliphate stuff. I live in a very urban area with a very large and diverse immigrant population, and I can tell you hands down that you are 100 times safer in an area populated by hindu or muslim immigrants than one that is hispanic. Sadly and typicall, the least safe areas by a very wide margin are the ones that are predominately populated by American blacks.
Posted by: Anon | Tuesday, December 15, 2009 at 03:58 PM
"..the ones that are predominately populated by American blacks."
Identity politics and race baiting, along with the welfare state has allowed this to happen. The worst possible thing that could have happened to American blacks happened, and that was the kidnapping of them by white liberals. My God, this has caused more poverty and suffering than anything in the history of the United States. MSNBC(lily white) is complaining about white tribalism for the sake of American blacks, when they do nothing to help blacks, but are guilty of white tribalism. You can't make this stuff up, folks. It would truly be funny if it didn't create such a damn mess.

That's why they say the road to hell is paved w/good intentions...the story of the civil rights struggle should have been a win/win for everyone....instead the country's unprecedented efforts to help blacks inexplicably resulted in a large segment of their community becoming not only hopeless, uneducated and violent, but seething with racism...not to nention the quality hit we;ve taken due to affirnative action
Mot the legacy Dr. King had in mind
Posted by: Anon | Tuesday, December 15, 2009 at 05:13 PM
While I surely don't agree with everything he said, Pat Buchanan predicted this in comprehensive detail in "the Death of the West"- among other things already come to pass.
And as Teddy Roosevelt said, the splintering of America into feuding factions base on cultural background would be the end of America... and it's now coming to pass.
That's why although we desperately need a fiscal conservative in the WH, that's not enough to save this country... we need a real cultural conservative who truly loves and understands that the USA is not just an economy-

Now, kindly GFY.

This is off topic but I see that we are about to pass the "health bill" and plunge this country into an economic and social nightmare despite the fact that the majority of people do not want it passed. I suppose we could all band together and offer the Democrat senators some huge bribes to not pass it but being Democrats they would not stay bought more than ten minutes or however long it would take for a counter offer to overrule the first bribe.
We are witnessing the passing of the Republic.

You know, I feel very blessed and quite fortunate that I grew up in the time I did in America.
Many will never know the Real America as it once was but I try to tell a lot of young people what it was like when I grew up. Some look at me in amazement when I tell them about staying at my grandma's in the summertime for a week every year and using an outdoor toilet and taking a sponge bath because there was only a well for water at her home. It was a beautiful place, a nice farm with peach trees, apple trees, fig trees, a donkey named daisy for plowing the fields to plant crops and chickens for eggs that I loved to harvest everyday when I spent time there.
A small black and white TV and one of those big wooden Radio's. A black pot bellied stove in the living room for heat and tons a quilts in the winter for sleeping.
Yep....those were the good ole days.
Later on I remember when they got indoor plumbing after pipes were laid for water lines to the house from the well. That well water tasted so good right from the well. As time went on the county finally laid water lines for that area. I've seen it all. I remember when there was no Interstate 75 South to Florida. Only way to Daytona was Highway 23 through all these little towns leading through SE Georgia to Florida. Then you got on A1A and drove right by the ocean all the way to Daytona.
Oh, and let's talk about racing. I remember when there were hardly any super speedways. I think Daytona became the first. Atlanta's track used to be a dirt track around a lake at what they now call the old fairgrounds.
I could talk about it a lot, but some of you may not want to travel down my memory lane with me. LOL. Hope you enjoyed what I did share, however.
Thing about it...I am not that old. My, things have come a long way in a short amount of time.
God Bless America. Maybe one day I will write a book. Been thinking about it with all the Crap going on.

Dan? are you back? good, I've missed Bob. Just kidding. Most young people today do not know what they are losing. Or maybe they are not losing it at all because they never had it. A thought occurred to me that A nation such as ours really only exists in the hearts and minds of its citizens. Otherwise it is a large piece of real estate. When the citizens stop seeing it as the last great hope for mankind, then it ceases to be so. Poof, America as we knew it, gone in a generation of foggy little minds who never conceptualized a nation of greatness and honor.

Re"The blacks are adults, not children. they made their choices, they wer told, full well, and they made their choice. Everything they got, they deserved. So, F*** 'em."
But It unfortunately slops over onto the rest of society as well when anyone chooses to be a ward of the state. Tally up the costs of crime, section 8 housing, SSI, head start, WIC, Medicaid, and untold other programs our wards of the state exist on. The trillions that are shoveled at subsectors of society do not stop them from living very expensive grimy cockroach infested (but with a touted safety net) kind of lives at the expense of the productive sector of society. I say take away the safety net and be amazed how many wards of the state will suddenly learn how to do something for their bread and circus. I am tired of paying for their nasty slothful lifestyles and the bureaurocrats who administer said lives.

"--- Wow. Anti-catholicism. I haven't seen that from a supposed conservative for decades ---"
It is what it is. Ex-catholic here, and seeing the supposed leader and defender of the "faith" kissing some mullah's copy of the koran is a far cry from what he should have been doing - preaching the gospel to the man.
I'll avoid any more discourse on this item for now, since some do recognize that we have a common enemy in Islam: but I won't be surprised if many more Catholics in the days to come turn to Islam after seeing the example of their pope.

"Maybe one day I will write a book."
You should, WBestPresidentEver, it would be an interesting read. What I would like to see is a book where each chapter was by a different person in a different part of the country reminiscing about the America we knew and grew up in.

The best remedy is this: Lower immigration numbers, period. Here's how: Enforce the law against illegal immigration AND EVEN MORE IMPORTANTLY, restrict chain (family) migration. That is, still allow legal immigration but limit the number of relatives the immigrant is allowed to "sponsor" to come to our country. It's that simple.
And the biggest problem of course, in terms of sheer numbers, is Mexico/Latino immigration. It must be reduced. See above.
