There isn't a great deal of principle on display right now when it comes to NJ and NY Democrats on the gay marriage issue. While quick to use it as an issue to rev up and raise money from a portion of their base, in NJ, they won't even schedule a debate and vote without being certain it will pass. No vote is being scheduled in New York, either.
Though I don't support the issue myself, it is worth noting how quickly the liberal pols in NY and NJ are happy to put their own interests over their constituents. That notion is troubling to me, even as one of the alleged rubes on the Right. However, I'm fairly certain the rubes over on the Left will behave and stay in line. After all, they are the smart, sophisticated rubes they so often claim to be, I suppose. heh!
MOUNT LAUREL, N.J. (AP) -- The state-to-state march to legalize gay marriage across the left-leaning Northeast has lost more momentum since a major setback three weeks ago at the ballot box in Maine.
Since then, legislatures in New York and New Jersey have failed to schedule long-expected votes on bills to recognize the unions in those states.
"If they are unable to pass gay marriage in New York and New Jersey, combined with the loss in Maine, it will confirm that gay marriage is not the inevitable wave of the future," said Maggie Gallagher, president of the National Organization for Marriage, which mobilizes social conservatives to fight against same-sex unions.
But since the election, key Democrats have said they don't intend to put the bill up for a vote unless they know it will pass. And so far, they say, that's not assured. On Monday, when lawmakers met for the first time since the election, the issue was in legislative limbo - not scheduled but not declared dead either.
Len Deo, president of the conservative New Jersey Family Policy Council, said he believes some lawmakers who were undecided before the election would now vote against a gay marriage bill.
"Observing what happened in the general election, I think that took the wind out of the sails of the same-sex marriage movement," he said.

Oh hell Dan, now Bob is going to charge you with plagerism for using one of his terms of endearment for you and me. 3.2.1 - "Dan you are unoriginal and stupid for not even being able to come up with your own words, all you wingnuts are dishonest and only can resort to name calling b/c you have no merit to your arguments" (sounds like Bob doesn't it) Oh yea, I am still trying to get an answer out of him/her as to whether or not he/she has a blog to demonstrate to us wingers as to how to "do it" since all he/she ever does is bitch about this site and you as being deplorable. Maybe you can convince him/her to shoot us all a link to his/her blog so we can see the blogosphere's version of the Sistine Chapel.

2010 will be about turnout. Off-year elections are about your base + the issue du jour.
Making an issue of gay marriage would definitely turn out a lot more sympathetic to Republicans.
Ergo, making an issues of gay marriage for 2010 would hurt Democratic re-election efforts.
So, no gay marriage with an off-year election looming.

Med pot was more popular in Maine than traditional marriage by 58% to 53% (both won).
Republicans are riding the wrong horse.

None of this surprising... i am really cursing myself for the spat that i had with a liberal gay friend.. if i was on talking terms, i would mail this article to him right away with the subject line "Take that FOOL !"
May be Obama and Biden are TRULY against gay marriage ! The lefty rubes will take some time to come to grips with that.

I can't understand why so many people care about this gay marriage crap. sounds like obvious prejudice to me, maybe someday people will worry more about themselves than who marries who

M. Simon, enlighten this pore dumb redneck here. California put gay marriage on the ballot during the '08 election. With Obama on the ballot the Democrat base poured to the polls and the issue failled. Yet the Republican presidential ticket barely campaigned in California, there was no use.
The issue did not fail because of Republicans, it failed because black and Hispanic Democrats voted against it. While the Republican party is split on the issue, so are the Democrats. Y'all are cordially invited to stop blaming Republicans for all the failures of your movement. The gays have pumped millions of dollars into the coffers of the Democrats over the years and the only thing that has managed is to put the most anti-gay President into office since Jimmah Carter.
