The angle on this particular story is a murderer serving a life sentence for killing his wife. Said to be suffering from sexual identity disorder, he's already had seven electrolysis treatments at taxpayer expense. Now he's in court arguing for re-assignment surgery.
This particular case aside, rest assured, with government run health care, prisoners will likely get much better care than you and me. In many cases, I suspect they already are.
Prison officials oppose Kosilek's request for surgery, saying the sex change would pose security problems.
U.S. District Judge Mark Wolf ruled in 2002 that Kosilek was entitled to treatment for gender identity disorder, but stopped short of ordering surgery. Kosilek sued again in 2005.
Kosilek had seven electrolysis treatments, but they were discontinued. Kosilek is due in court Monday to renew the request.
