Unfortunately, the suckers here aren't the DC GOP, it's conservatives and members of the center-Right that first gave their money to the Republican organizations believing it would be spent in support of their agendas. I doubt many supporters of government funded abortion, Card Check and all the Federal Pork you can get gave much money to the GOP.
But in their misguided wisdom and quest for power, the GOP's reasoning led them to support those very things in Dede Scozzafava. It's fair to assume that this is the new Big Tent Republican Party we've been hearing about. There were two acceptable to all candidates available before this all blew up. So, don't let DC try to pin this on the grassroots. Doheny and Maroun would have been fine. But they split the majority of support during the early selection process and Scozzafava emerged from a plurality to winning it all. Can you say John McCain, anyone?
While there are certain districts and states where moderate Republicans might fit the bill, Scozzafava was not a moderate. She was a liberal in a district that was moderate, at best. If the GOP won't get the message to return to the conservative and center-Right fundamentals that can win elections in far more states than they believe, they are doomed. Instead of leading over the last decade or more, they have become followers. And the best they seem capable of coming up with is following Democrats to the Left which will only destroy the very principles that helped make America great.
We need a party that can and will stand up for what's right, not what they may perceive to be the easiest path to a larger slice of the Federal pie. It's not too late for them to get it. But time is running out. Let's hope the right leadership soon emerges before they become a party unworthy of our continued support. The link to Michelle Malkin as per above.
“Since beginning my campaign, I have told you that this election is not about me; it’s about the people of this District,” Scozzafava wrote in an e-mail sent to supporters this afternoon.
“It is in this spirit that I am writing to let you know I am supporting Bill Owens for Congress and urge you to do the same.”
At 10 p.m. last night – right in the middle of the Halloween festivities – Scozzafava’s husband, Ron McDougall, president of the Jefferson/Lewis/St. Lawrence Central Labor Council issued a statement through the AFL-CIO that he is endorsing Owens against Conservative candidate Doug Hoffman.
According to his statement, it basically all comes down to support of the labor movement’s top priority, the Employee Free Choice Act and its controversial card-check provision, which Owens and Scozzafava supported – much to the chagrin of the right – and Hoffman pointedly does not.

“Since beginning my campaign, I have told you that this election is not about me; it’s about the people of this District,” Scozzafava wrote in an e-mail sent to supporters this afternoon."
Translation: "It's all about me and my hurt feelings."
Scozzafava was a loser yesterday, she's a loser today, and she'll be a loser forever hence.

If I hear the word "Big Tent" one more time, I'll puke (on the back of a liberal scumbag).

The conventional wisdom is that moderates are no longer welcome in the GOP. See here:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_ny_special_election
Besides being a meme straight out of JournoList, the "conventional wisdom" also misses what is perhaps the real issue: people aren't happy with the sudden left turn in Washington and they aren't willing to send people to Washington who are going to enable that left turn. So, what's the big deal with that? The big deal is not NY-23. The big deal is what is going to happen in 2010 to the Blue Dog democrats. These democrats were elected in more conservative districts where the voters are more in line with Hoffman supporters. Their constituents aren't happy with the deficit exploding, the condition of the economy and health care becoming socialized. These constituents also realize that the Blue Dogs are impotent. They either a.) have done nothing about the stimulus, socialized health care and other liberal bills or b.) they have been run roughshod by Pelosi and Reid.
Here's an example: public option. Remember all that wrangling by the Blue Dogs that got the public option out of the Baucus health care bill? Well, Pelosi and Reid put it right back in after the bill came out of committee.
If Owens wins, NY-23 will be treated as a special victory by the DNC and its supporters in the media. This conventional wisdom will be trotted out over and over again. But the Blue Dogs will be quaking in their boots because there won't be a Scozzafava to bail them out.
