This headline may come as a bit of a surprise, so too might that fact that the warmest year recorded globally was not in 2008 or 2007, but in 1998.

Wow, Al "Mr. Freeze" Gore causes dropping temperature every time he gives a talk on global warming (a real dog bites man story),

"Climatologists at the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York City have found that 2006 was the fifth warmest year in the past century.
Image right: The five warmest years since the late 1880s, according to NASA scientists, are in descending order 2005, 1998, 2002, 2003 and 2006. "

Actually, 1932 was the warmest year of the 20th century. James Hansen of GISS was forced to admit he had fudged the data to conceal this.
Posted by: ZT | Sunday, October 11, 2009 at 01:13 PM
I think you mean 1934.
When talking about Global Warming - cherry-picking a single year doesn't mean anything. Global Warming is a trend, not a single data point.
And the trend is up, up, up.

And since we know that NASA scientists work for the second biggest global warming scammer (Hanson) after Algore, that study isn't worth the pixels it's shown on.

Or, according to the CRU, the trend is down, down, down: http://www.cru.uea.ac.uk/cru/info/warming/
Posted by: Akatsukami | Sunday, October 11, 2009 at 04:28 PM
1998 was a year when the atmosphere was warm. The extra heat came from the oceans via the El Nino process. The earth as whole was not warmer that year.
Most writers confuse air temperatures with earth overall (global) temperatures, even when they know better. It's a natural mistake.
Posted by: Fred2 | Sunday, October 11, 2009 at 04:46 PM
"Or, according to the CRU, the trend is down, down, down"
Thanks for that link to CRU - some interesting info on that page. Like this:
"The year 2008 was tenth warmest on record, exceeded by 1998, 2005, 2003, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2001, 2007 and 1997"
"'Warming of the climate system is unequivocal, as is now evident from observations of increases in global average air and ocean temperatures, widespread melting of snow and ice, and rising global average sea level.'"

What is the temperature supposed to be? And how do you know?

"What is the temperature supposed to be? And how do you know?"
The Alarmists don't have a clue. They are manufacturing a boogy man to scare the populace into compliance with their desired legislative controls. Global warming/cooling/climate change/ohgodohgodweareallgoingtodie! is a political hoax. Nothing more, nothing less. In the absence of data, they manufacture their own (fake hockey stick graph) and attack anyone who questions them as a "denier". It isn't science, it is a religion and islamofascists got nothing on eco-loons when it comes to bringing the crazy. At least we can drop bombs on the koranimals, but when it comes to the green-weinies, the inmates are now running the asylum.

Global what?????
Posted by: nina | Sunday, October 11, 2009 at 11:21 PM
The people who believe in global warming will say that global warming is the cause of all extremes; be they extreme heat, extreme cold, extreme hurricanes, etc. Doesn't pass the smell test to me, but that is what they will say. And, OBTW, Obama is one of the believers.
Posted by: handy aufladen | Monday, October 12, 2009 at 02:55 AM
I'll give a rat's ass what the green weenies say when they drop off the grid and live by example. But for the most part, they don't do that, and I don't care. They just slap the bumperstickers on and keep driving, as far as I can tell.
They're as much a part of the problem as anyone else, Al Gore included, and I don't give a shit what they have to say because of it.

You can see the trends from the major temp reporting agencies here.
http://www.climate4you.com/
at global temps.
RSS and UAH are the readings from space (and should have the least amount of surface contamination). HadCrut is from the UK. GISS readings are from Goddard and the Hansen crowd taken from surface measurements..
There are serious questions about the quality of the GISS data.
http://wattsupwiththat.com/2009/03/28/how-not-to-measure-temperature-part-86-when-in-rome-dont-do-as-the-romans-do/
Also, very serious questions about the quality of the data used to reconstruct temperatures in the last month or so.
http://wattsupwiththat.com/2009/10/01/response-from-briffa-on-the-yamal-tree-ring-affair-plus-rebuttal/
And apparently the AGW crowd is now resorting to citing wikipedia, something I wouldn't let my high school kid do on a term paper.

Didn't any of you get the memo?
Moonbats don't call it "Global Warming" anymore because rational thinking human beings know it's complete bullshit!
Anyone freezing their ass off the past couple of years knows that's gonna be a hard sell!!
If they bring up the whole "one of the coldest winters on record" stuff from last year just say "hey it's just a minor "dip" in the hockey stick curve so just ignore it". Then remind them that ALGORE says the oceans are still gonna rise a few feet by the end of the century!!!
Please use the more PC terminology from now on of "Climate Change"!
That way when they use facts and stuff like any actual climate impact is more likely from, you know, THE SUN!! we can still push our progressive, one world order agenda without having to prove how much smarter we are then those pesky common folk!!
Eliminate cow farts!!!! Eat more tofu!!! Keep spreading the disinformation, Uncle George has Billions invested in this!!!

You're confusing weather with climate. The body of evidence is that there is global warming and the vast majority of climatologists agree.
"A new poll among 3,146 earth scientists found that 90 percent believe global warming is real, while 82 percent agree that human activity been a significant factor in changing mean global temperatures."

From the reference for the 3146 scientists.
*The authors contacted 10,200 scientists listed in the 2007 edition of the American Geological Institute's Directory of Geoscience Departments and received 3,146 responses to their two questions: "have mean global temperatures risen compared to pre-1800s levels?" and "Has human activity been a significant factor in changing mean global temperatures?"
1. Pre 1800 would have been the little ice age. It is no surprise that the world is now warmer, because in the little ice age it was cold.
2. Has man contributed. Sure -- we've built cities and changed the landscape.
3. Apparently almost 70% of those polled didn't respond.
The reference cited nowhere mentions carbon dioxide. For the last eight years carbon dioxide continues to go up and temperatures are stable. The theory does not fit the observed data.
Read for yourselves. Don't believe 3,146 scientists.

Did you read the intro paragraph? It's pretty clear:
"A new poll among 3,146 earth scientists found that 90 percent believe global warming is real, while 82 percent agree that human activity been a significant factor in changing mean global temperatures."
Again "believe global warming is real".
"temperatures are stable"
Hardly, from the CRU link above: "The year 2008 was tenth warmest on record, exceeded by 1998, 2005, 2003, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2001, 2007 and 1997"

WPE. I read and re-read
"believe global warming is real" That's the conclusion the reporter or writer is drawing. But the question that was asked was, "have mean global temperatures risen compared to pre-1800s levels?" That puts the start at the tail end of the little ice age. That's like asking was it colder in December.
The second question was, "Has human activity been a significant factor in changing mean global temperatures?" Bjorn Lomborg or Dr. John Christie would answer yes to that question, but neither would contend, "...global warming is real the way the author means here. (it's real and it's a catastrophe). Dr. Christie might attribute about 1/3 of the observed temp rise to AGW. The other 2/3 to natural causes. No where does this article or survey seem to mention carbon dioxide as a primary driver of climate.
Don't you wonder why over 7,000 scientists never replied to a survey like this? They contacted over 10,000 and only a little over 3,000 responded.
And, I don't think I will convince you, but anyone who is still looking can check out the major sources of temp records for themselves. the graphs speak for themselves.

Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change
“Warming of the climate system is unequivocal, as is now evident from observations of increases in global average air and ocean temperatures, widespread melting of snow and ice, and rising global average sea level”
American Meteorological Society
"Indeed, strong observational evidence and results from modeling studies indicate that, at least over the last 50 years, human activities are a major contributor to climate change." (February 2007)
American Geophysical Union
"The Earth's climate is now clearly out of balance and is warming. Many components of the climate system—including the temperatures of the atmosphere, land and ocean, the extent of sea ice and mountain glaciers, the sea level, the distribution of precipitation, and the length of seasons—are now changing at rates and in patterns that are not natural and are best explained by the increased atmospheric abundances of greenhouse gases and aerosols generated by human activity during the 20th century." (Adopted December 2003, Revised and Reaffirmed December 2007)
American Association for the Advancement of Science
"The scientific evidence is clear: global climate change caused by human activities is occurring now, and it is a growing threat to society." (December 2006)
Geological Society of America
"The Geological Society of America (GSA) supports the scientific conclusions that Earth’s climate is changing; the climate changes are due in part to human activities; and the probable consequences of the climate changes will be significant and blind to geopolitical boundaries." (October 2006)
American Chemical Society
"There is now general agreement among scientific experts that the recent warming trend is real (and particularly strong within the past 20 years), that most of the observed warming is likely due to increased atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations, and that climate change could have serious adverse effects by the end of this century." (July 2004)
U.S. National Academy of Sciences:
"The scientific understanding of climate change is now sufficiently clear to justify taking steps to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere." (2005)
******
"Oreskes analyzed 928 abstracts published in refereed scientific journals between 1993 and 2003 and listed in the ISI database with the keywords 'climate change.'... Of all the papers, 75 percent either explicitly or implicitly accepted the consensus view that global warming is happening and humans are contributing to it; 25 percent dealt with methods or ancient climates, taking no position on current anthropogenic [human-caused] climate change. Remarkably, none of the papers disagreed with the consensus position."

so we're agreed that the reference to 3,146 scientists was a misleading piece of crap?
