Would it really have made sense to award the Olympics to a country when the most visible advocates for the United States are on record as having spent much of their lives not being proud of their country? I mean, if they've been so ashamed of America for so long, what kind of country must it be?
Next time, perhaps they should consider relying on advocates who truly are proud of America and like her just the way she's been. Yes, Sarah Palin does come to mind just now. For all the talk of Michelle's marvelous biceps, I guess arm twisting the IOC into granting Blagoland the games was just too herculean a struggle for the neophyte diplomat and her husband. Oh well. Maybe Michelle managed to get some shopping done if nothing else.
Chicago’s bid leaders had worked for nearly four years and spent close to $50 million to bring the Summer Olympics to the United States for the first time in 20 years. Chicago had been considered among Olympic insiders as a favorite to win the Games, along with Rio.
Instead, the I.O.C. delivered a crushing blow to American hopes for the second straight time. New York’s bid was eliminated in the second round of voting for the 2012 Olympics.
United States Olympic Committee leaders appeared stunned by the news and had no comment as they left the voting hall. Mr. Obama was flying back to Washington at the time of the vote.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva had led Rio’s emotional appeal to win the Games and the urge to make history tugged at the I.O.C., which voted it the winner over Madrid.

$50 million wasted on a pipe dream of special interests groups..
How many cops and fireman could have been hired?
How many jobs could have been created?
How many drug addicts or gangbangers could have been regabilitated.
The list goes on....

I am so glad that he failed in his mission because as a REAL TRUE GOD FEARING American we dont' need all dem foreigners here... They'll probably just want to take advantage of our fantastic health care system when they are here anyway.
you get 'em Dan..... btw, any more on the child molester that killed himself and scrawled FED on himself just to make us REAL TRUE GOD FEARING AMERICANS look bad? I so love your "investigations". Actually get a little aroused as you expose the creeps.

Obama is simply incompetent politically. So is his inner circle.
I said this repeatedly during and after the campaign while almost every talking head gave unwarranted credit to Obama and his camp for their "brilliant campaign."
BS. He had more gaffes in his campaign than Bush had in eight years in office. He said more stupid things in 1 year than Quayle said in his life.
He just wasn't called on it. Period.
Since becoming President, he has made more bone-headed moves than I can count. Stupid moves. Insane moves for anyone but someone who has the Legacy media in his pocket.
This is yet another one.
The PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES doesn't put his prestige on the line for something he doesn't have to unless he ALREADY has what he is "seeking."
Period.
The POTUS doesn't go hunting and come home with an empty bag.
Anyone but an arrogant political neophyte learned this at a very early stage in their political career.

Remember when the Democrats bragged about Hillary Rodham Clinton was going to get the Olympics for New York City for 2012?
She didn't even dodge any sniper fire on that mission, but again flopped dramatically.
Another utter failure and the big "star power" who talks about "smart power" did nothing.
Democrats tend to talk about their Partisans doing this and doing that, and it always ends up to be meaningless hype.
DNC flop once again.

"Obama is simply incompetent politically."
And yet he whopped your collective asses. Not only got himself elected but brought with him huge majorities in the Senate, House and State Houses. He got the stimulus bill passed and we will have health care reform (with a public option) before too long. Something that few people would have thought possible not too long ago.
Not so freakin bad for a political incompetent I would say. lol
Oh yeah, and lets not forget that the Republicans are polling lower than whale poop as well.
Posted by: Proud Liberal | Friday, October 02, 2009 at 01:52 PM
What predictably stupid and petty Obama-hatred. Couldn't it just possibly be the case that South America -- having never hosted an Olympics -- was due to be given the honor this time around, and that maybe there's nothing at all wrong with that?
Let me guess that HAD Chicago won the bid, Riehl would be whining about how Obama abused his high office to help his Chicago cronies. Riehl doesn't give a s#*t about intellectual honesty, so long as there's an opportunity for a cheap shot at Obama to be exploited. Wing nuts have no honor.

Hey Proud Liberal,
Don't count your chickens before they hatch !!
You don't have your public option healthcare yet and your short lived majority might down to a serious republican defeat before too long !!
Obama needs some kind of a victory soon !! And a 9.8 % unemployment rate doesn't count as a victory ....the rate is suppose to go down ...not up !!

AS a Chicagoian and a Democrat, I'm happy today.
The Olympics are not worth the trouble, expense and pretention they bring with them.
Daley screwed the unions. You don't do that in Chicago unless you are really republican. He's done.

How hilarious to see our trolls' heads explode as their "hopes" for a transformative Obama presidency fade. This guy has reached the peter principle...he is in way over his head and all but his most ardent devotees can see it clearly. He has failed on healthcare, arrogantly traipses off to Europe only to come home empty-handed, wishy-washy on "his" war in Afghanistan. Don't forget, he is still using the dreaded, previously unconstitutional patriot act to catch terrorists, has decided not to close gitmo and will keep some troops in Iraq for the forseeable future. All the dreams of the those enlightened Obama voters gone up in a smoke screen in the first year.
Thankfully, he'll be gone after one term and we can start cleaning up the messes he has already made.

speaking of Bill Sparkman a.k.a. Fe Fe
"While the nation fixates on the mysterious nature of Sparkman's death, area Scout leaders remembered a man they once knew as "Fe Fe," for his poodle-like curls.
Sparkman earned the nickname while serving as equipment manager for the football team at Vanderbilt University. He had "Fe Fe" on his license tag when he lived in Florida, friends recalled. After he became a professional Scout, he changed the tag to "Eagle 4."

I'm glad Chicago lost it because Hussein bin Obama made a fool of himself, hustling and lobbying to get the games, which was only a payback to his Chicago machine backers.
Now that unemployment is still rising, productivity down, the deficit and debt are much higher than in recent years, our military posture against militant Islam weakening, we are stuck with an ego-obsessed, celebrity as our president.

Our country are governed by essentially one philosophy – liberal democratic philosophy, that is, grow government and shrink the private sector. Growing government creates more dependent servants, almost always willing to vote for the Democratic machine.

Conservatives would love Obama to fail even if it meant that the country was harmed in the process. That shows their true lack of honor and patriotism.
And RSG, the larger share of federal debt -- even WITH Obama's economic stimulus and healthcare reform plans -- is STILL predominantly Bush's:
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/10/business/economy/10leonhardt.html
The Iraq and Afghanistan wars and Bush's tax cuts amount to substantially more than Obama's economic stimulus and healthcare reform plans combined.

Also, speculating on what Dan would or would not say is silly and especialy as a reason to justify your reasoning for stating that we have no honor. I have honor Bob. So please define honor and then weigh it and demonstrate how you have more of it than me? I am very interested in your methodology.

Proud liberal.
I'm not really sure what you're so "proud" about. Clearly, you can't understand what you read.
Obama didn't "win." He was handed the office on a silver platter. Had he undergone even 1/10th of the scrutiny Bush did in either of his elections, he would have lost handily.
He wouldn't have made it past Hillary, the "most hated woman in America" (until Palin, that is...)
He didn't run a "brilliant campaign." He didn't even run a "good" or "mediocre" campaign.
He insulted women. He insulted Christians. He insulted gun owners. He called those who would vote against him "racists."
He said that there were "57 states." He frequently didn't know where he was while giving stump speeches. He couldn't find words without a teleprompter. He clearly stated that he was for redistribution of the wealth.
He was friends (and a business associate) with a domestic terrorist. He was friends (and a business associate) with a criminal slumlord. He attended a church for twenty years (hasn't gone to church but ONCE since becoming POTUS, so we know WHY he went to that church) which espoused "Black Liberation Theology" and had a pastor (and mentor and "like a father" friend) who espoused racism and hatred of the United States. He wrote in his own words that it was a world run by "white man's greed." He has a wife who, although a graduate of an ivy league university and a successful lawyer (and married to a U.S. Senator) who, until he was nominated as the Democratic nominee hadn't before been "proud" of her country. He claimed to be conceived as a result of the protest at Selma but that proved to be a convenient lie. He claimed a Marxist as a mentor. He was closely aligned with ACORN and, even then, most everyone who even paid casual attention to the news knew that ACORN was corrupt and was attempting to corrupt the political system.
These are the gaffes and outrageous associations and behavior I can run off the top of my head prior to the election, any ONE of which would be sufficient to doom any other candidate. (Except ACORN -- every Democrat elected official is tied at the hips to that organization.)
He would be a LAUGHING STOCK for his "57 states" remark were he white and democrat or any Republican. Even (Bill) Clinton couldn't help but note that, had Obama not been black, he wouldn't stand a chance. NO white politician (even Democrat) with such ties as his could have been elected to the Presidency. (You think that the outrage at Van Jones isn't real? This is AMERICA. Some of us (still -- for a while yet) have NO desire to allow this country to be "transformed" into a Marxist nation. Now that people are finally PAYING ATTENTION to him -- duh -- he's less popular than ANY President (other than Clinton who never received a majority of the vote in the first place) ever was at this stage in his Presidency.
The people are finally getting a look at what he IS -- not what he SAYS he is or what the legacy media CLAIMS he is -- but what he ACTUALLY is as viewed through his ACTIONS.
Actions which the legacy media can only TRY to hide, but with so many other outlets and with the actions he's taking being on such important issues (health care, energy policy, foreign policy) people are actually FERRETING out the reality of this radical. (Is there some question why FOX news' ratings have rocketed upwards since the election?)
The people (most of them ... the sane ones, the ones who believe in a free and strong country, the ones who believe in something resembling a free market system) don't like what they see.
This is just one more example of his political incompetence. One more "Van Jones." One more "re-set button." One more Honduras ("We're supporting WHICH side? The Marxist?"). One more Iran (We really do need more "talk." It's been SO successful thus far, hasn't it? One more Afghanistan (We're doing what over there? I mean, really. What? Win? Run? I thought it was the "good war?" One more North Korea. (Just another missile...nothing to worry about...) One more "he didn't even TALK (but once???) to his field general in Afghanistan in SEVENTY DAYS???!!!!" One more "how many damn times is this guy going to preempt our television viewing playing ping pong with his teleprompters to tell us what we already know and disagree with?" One more -- "He's on LETTERMAN? The PRESIDENT is on LETTERMAN? Is that THE PRESIDENT giving a PROMO for the new George Lopez talk show?" "GET TO WORK YOU CHUMP!" One more "saved or created" jobs while we're in a three decade unemployment slump. NO ONE believes that. One more "Slow Joe" Biden. One more betrayal of our allies for NOTHING from Russia except the back of its hand. One more IPod for the Queen of England (with his OWN SPEECHES on it.) One more returned Churchill bust. One more "Gates-gate."
Sigh. You voted for this Marxist chump.

It's a pretty sad day in America when citizens are happy they we lost the bid for an Olympics. Take a good look in the mirror.
I guess you want Obama to fail in Iraq and Afghanistan too. Hey why not..If it costs American lives, Chicago's bid, Health care reform, economic sucess, and the plain long term success of the United States... it's worth it. Nothing say embarrassment to the President of the United States like failure for the United States! WPE - perhaps you need to refresh yourself on US civics.......Congress, specifically the House is most responsible for spending. And who has held the majority in the House since Nov. 2006?
BJ Clinton's surplus is simply typical liberal priorities - shrink the armed forces and transfer that money to liberal supporters - WELFARE, TRANSFER PAYMENTS, NON-PRODUCTIVE ECONOMIC RENT SEEKING.
Clinton's gutting of the armed forces help lead to 9/11. A soft, weak US, obsessed with video games and the internet and we got attacked. SOrry for limp-wrists (aka, libs), it was a "tragedy", a failure of law enforcement.
And history is repeating itself with Hussein bin Obama........gutting our defenses, transferring money to the "inner city" and Latino (read: illegal alien) communities.
This Chimp is going down........

As usual the President sends his wife over to Denmark at a cost of millions and then arrives at a cost of more millions. He is a world travelor as our county drifts without a course and all of the number he promised to change are worse. His vision is seen through rose colored glasses and is unreachable even on the backs of the middle class. He met with the man in charge of the Afgan(McCrystal) war one time in seven months. His health care plan is in shambles because the 45 million people he says are uninsured are working people that don't qualify for benefits.Such as low income earners that work 30 hours or less a week. The top and very bottom(who recieve free medical) are immune to these costs. The President needs to stay home, work with Congress and stop thinking he knows what's best for all Americans..This Olympic joke is another defeat that I'm sure he does not understand.Other countries see him for what he is. An over inflated ego politician.
Posted by: Sammy Daniels | Friday, October 02, 2009 at 04:05 PM
Well, Bob, I don't purport to speak for "conservatives," only myself.
I have to say, the President's batting average, so far, is not impressive. I am curious - other than spending too much of our money, to no good effect, what has he accomplished?
This latest defeat is an excellent example. First, I would point out that, with very few exceptions (LA and Atlanta come to mine), hosting the Olympics has not been an economic boon for most cities. However, having made obtaining the Olympics a goal of his administration (and why, exactly, is this an appropriate role for the White House?), he failed miserably. The IOC vote seemed to me to be a calculated insult to the President. Out in the first round, with the fewest votes of any city?
I'll admit that I was surprised by the outcome - any competent politician would have placed his personal prestige behind such a campaign only if he had good reason to believe that he at least had a good shot, if not a sure thing. And, yet, the President devoted substantial time, effort and political capital to an embarrassignly failed attempt.
I would echo the thoughts of another poster - He is not our only example, but Barack Obama is clearly our most egregious example of a Peter Principle Presidency. This young man has been elevated far beyond his level of competency, and it can only harm our country to watch his continuing flailing, failing efforts. What my son and his friends would call "epic fail."
Posted by: LampofDiogenes | Friday, October 02, 2009 at 04:05 PM
It's really hard to find people that will admit the President is doing a good job. He is happy because he is on TV every night and the young people really belive he is leveling out the county. Ask the question"are you better off now than a year ago'? I think not and it's getting worse. If Obama is elected again---shame on all of us.

muffler: At best, getting the Olympics is a wash. Getting it for CHICAGO is simply a bad idea -- it is a city awash in corruption. (1/2 the city of CHICAGO didn't want it there, either FYI...)
But...no one is "happy" that we "lost" the bid for the Olympics.
And, we're not "happy" that we have a President who doesn't have the basic political acumen NOT to risk the political prestige of the OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENCY OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA on, as one commentator called it, a "trifle."
He could have sent his wife. He could have sent Mayor Daley. He could have sent Michael Jordan. Hell, if he had ASKED, Romney would have gone.
But, to risk the scant political capital he has remaining in a move in which he INVITED the entire world to rebuff him -- was STUPID. It was COUNTERPRODUCTIVE. It LESSENED the OFFICE.
We are, indeed, very "unhappy" that we have such a President in the oval office.
We would LIKE one who could make up his mind about what to do in a war in which our kids are being killed -- a war which, UNTIL HE HAD TO WAGE IT, he was all in favor of.
We would LIKE one who sided with the people of Iran rather than the oppressive regime.
We would LIKE one who took tangible action against Iran rather than "talk" to people who are demonstrably insane.
We would LIKE one who sided with the non-Marxists in Honduras rather than the would-be "President for Life."
We would LIKE one who surrounded himself with good, honorable, and decent men and women to run this country rather than political hacks and radicals.
But, we got the one we got.
You voted for this chump. We have to live with him.

This could be the best thing that ever happens to Obama. He was bitch-slapped by the IOC. The freaking IOC! BFD. A few feathers ruffled, a few feelings hurt, but nobody killed or trampled on by tyrants in the process. No loss of freedoms or lives for thousands of innocent people.
If this humbles and chastens the man a wee bit, good for all of us. Because the next time it will be Ahmadinejad or Putin or the Chinese administering the slapping if he's not careful, and the consequences won't be minor.
Certainly "a teachable moment", if he's open to teaching, but I remain skeptical. But we can Hope, yes we can!

The Olympic Committee apparently agreed with the Obamas. America is an inherently evil country with no exceptionalism whatsoever, we're a bunch of racist capitalist pigs that don't care about the poor whose "soul is broken". The committee was just trying to "spread the wealth" to a country that hasn't had the opportunities of richer countries and for our own good they took the Olympics away from us and gave it to someone else. Maybe they can tax us to watch the Olympics on television to help pay the expenses of Rio.

Ah WPE, once again, you are masturbating to MSNBC and pictures of the "O". :)
The House controls ALL, repeat, ALL spending. The House has been under Democratic control since Nov. 2006. BJ Clinton had a surplus. Why? Because he drastically cut the armed forces in the 1990s and adopted a "soft" attitude, that's why. And because the GOP Congress forces welfare reform unto BJ. We are currently repeating the same with the Kenyan in Chief. Lowering our defenses, adopting a "soft" attitude. The world likes when the USA is weak and meek. It's human nature. Others are jealous of us. They want us down to their level. They don't like when we stand up for ourselves. Geez, do I have to explain human nature to you?
Furthermore, we were attacked on 9/11/2001. Have you forgotten? Of course, we ramped up our defense spending, wouldn't you? Bush's deficit and debt were going down until the ecomomic collapse last fall. You think that's all Bush's fault? Too much MSNBC......

K says we should boycott the obviously "racist olympics". You can't be serious. The Olympics were awarded to a country that is populated primarily by black and brown people. That is the sort of excuses you get from people who want to insist Obama is being picked on by everyone. It's George Bush's fault or a plot by racists. Obama is just a victim. That song and dance is getting old. Obama is as much or more white than black. Maybe the Olympic Committee discriminated against Obama the white man and is why they gave the games to a non white country. Hey K get a brain it won't cause you no pain.It is really not a strain and won't cause you to shame, and you really don't have no one to blame except yourselves.

9/11 - Yeah, I remember. And Bush was president, not Clinton. Remember the memo? "Al Qaeda determined to strike the United States" that Condi blew off as a "historical document"? Remember testimony about him repeatedly warning Bush of the dangers of Al Qaeda and getting nothing.
Presidents make and set budgets. Bush passed his tax cuts, started the Iraq War - which he funded outside the budget process - and pushed through the budget busing Medicare reform bill. All long before the Dems took back the House.
We're spending more on defense this year than last. In the Land of the Wingnut, that's a cut. I think we're outspending Al Qaeda by just a bit.
Obama was born in Hawaii. Anyone believing otherwise is a moron.

muffler - when you guess and speculate as to an event and or a situtaion then use those expected mythological reults as a fact(s) to support your theory no one can take your serious. so prove something instead of guessing, and i might be willing to take you serious? you can start off with proving with fact what you stated about Apollo 13? I'll wait for your facts. thanks
You quietly provd my point. I for one wasn't expecting a "mythical" anything. It's quite a difference in rooting for success based on trying versus banking on a some mythical miracle. I fail to understand why one side thinks the other side has some form of mythical awe for Obama.
There is obviously no way to prove the Apollo 13 analogy, but it is meant as a means to express that the Right recently roots for whatever will make the President look bad or fail.. even at the expense of the image or reputation of the United States. The failure to get the Olympics is sad on a national level.
I get the distinct impression (as do a lot of people) that the right would have complained if Obama stayed out of the IOC process in as much as tried the other way. Damned if you do or don't - it's a lazy way to complain.
Obama isn't a socialist, he isn't a fascist, he isn't 90 percent of what the Right tries to meme. The facts don't support it and never have, You can be in opposition to someone and their ideas while being productive to solutions. God forbid the Right partnered with the Left (Rep/Dem) to move the US ahead, but it's easier to complain and make stuff up.

I'll make this as simple as possible
1. $513 billion was Bush's 2009 Defense Budget
2. $534 billion is Obama's 2010 Defense Budget
$534 Billion is more than $513 billion. Which, by definition, means Obama is NOT cutting the defense budget.

brucet, where did you get the idea that Obama is at fault for the current state of affairs in Afghanistan? Did you sleep through the last 8 years that bush ignored the war there, or are you really that ignorant. Why am I not surprised that Republicans are happy this great nation lost out on the Olympics, they are pretty much against anything constructive or productive anyway. Where is their Health care reform Ideas, where is thier recession, housing or financial crisis ideas? Nowhere, they don't have any. Republicanism is a mental illness.

WPE and RSG,
Not to be overly tendentious, but no President in my lifetime has had a "balanced budget" (using anything other than totally bogus "government" accounting). Heard of this little item called Social Security? All the money paid in to SS each year, in excess of what is needed to pay current benefits (which will be zero, quite soon) is put in the general fund and spent. Subtract that money from President Clinton's best "surplus" year, and he was running a substantial deficit.
WPE, you will find few, if any, conservatives who will support Bush's spending. Having said that, as was the case with Reagan, one only need look at what we got for our dollars. Reagan deficits = defeat of the Soviet Union. Bush 1 deficits = not much. Clinton fake surplus = not much. Bush 2 deficits = defeat of Saddam Hussein, and establishment of a nascent democracy in the Middle East. Obama deficits = highest unemployment in 30 years, two nationalized automobile companies (that are well on their way to failing again).
Not a fan of deficits, but if we're going to run one, I'd like to get a little value for it, thank you.
