While not wanting to direct attention away from what's going on with Doug Hoffman in NY - 23 right now, let's be candid, conservatism is already entitled to claim a victory, which doesn't mean the war is over.
However, when the GOP leadership changed its tune on Doug Hoffman yesterday, I paused to put this race in perspective. Aside from the current conservative resurgence, frankly, it is not a significant election. No offense to Dough Hoffman. But this is for one District seat with now less than a one year term. And whether it is Dede, Owens, or Doug Hoffman, as it appears it might be, who is sworn in after the election dust settles, any of them will be so new to DC, they will hardly have time to settle in before 2010 starts to boil.
What is incredibly significant is that, in an otherwise unimportant election, the GOP leadership in Washington, except for Newt Gingrich, was forced to catch and correct itself before it went over a cliff.
For a while now we've been shouting, Do you hear us, now? While we have no intention of going silent or becoming unmindful, hey ... they have heard us ... loud and clear. That much is certain, win or lose come November 3.
Not only that, but they fear us. And they had darn well not lose that fear any time, soon. Because I don't think we're going away.
Come what may, we have won one. And it should only fuel our spirits and inspire us to further growth and activism as we move on toward 2010. This is our time. And we should aim to bring Obama's grand time in the White House with a rubber stamp of a Democrat Congress to an end after 2010.
That may be the one thing he has genuinely earned during his entire short national political career.

It's also -as noted with horror by MoveOn.org- a big pump for the "Palin wing" of the GOP- and already a win for her.
But I would look for Hoffman to be back at it next year anyway, the seat's up again, right?
He's got a great shot at it now... and even better next year, IMO.
Give 'em hell, Doug!!!

To Tea Partiers,
This win is like Washington's win at Trenton in 1776, or if you prefer WWII analogies - this is North Africa. Not real important, but it has certainly "blooded" the 'Tea Party' Army. We learned A LOT about how to fight. We're only going to get better, bigger, and tougher.
The bad guys are going to hit back, and hit back hard. Savor today, prepare for tomorrow & vote, vote, vote.
If you're in Jersey maybe even Republican cemataries can vote \sarc

"Aside from the current conservative resurgence, frankly, it is not a significant election."
absolutely. it is an accidental battlefield.
it reminds me of the iliad, with a twist.
instead of the 'gods' selecting their own time to act, and hero to support, there is only one moment where the one arrow, in flight, determines the outcome. All the players are trapped and tied to this single arrows flight.
If I were newt, I'd look back at what I have said about 'third party' candidates are doing to the gop.
If hoffman beats the gop pick, even if he loses the election, the fodder will be provided for the argument that it is the gop which has decided to become the third party, to the conservatives. All this referencing perot...
perot didn't beat bush. hoffman will beat dede.

Weakness flows to power, but weakness can never be trusted. We don't owe the repubs anything, and should replace them with true conservatives. New people are needed, not tired old party hacks, and that means Newt, also.

Thank you Glenn Beck for setting the organizational tone that is going to be needed going forward. If only the Triumvirate (Limbaugh, Levin, Hannity) were willing to put their money and power where their microphones are. The Triumvirate speaks but does not act.
