Interesting read in the second link from a military guy on troop morale.
America’s deadliest month in Afghanistan as Obama delays. The Obama delays bit is my own, but the fact of the matter is, that's precisely what he has done for quite some time. From a BBC blog. We wouldn't want to step on the Nobel Peace Prize press, or start trouble while we're pushing a socialist program for health care reform. Why act with urgency even while US forces in harm's way?
At best, I've seen talk of him meeting the Generals only part of the way. I thought the Powell doctrine was their thing now? He certainly welcomes Powell into the fold before the election, what happened to that? Where is Powell now? Will he criticize Obama?
Such are the decisions from whence Peace Prizes spring. No wonder morale in Afghanistan is down with this clown at the helm of a rudderless ship of state when it comes to war planning.
America’s deadliest month in Afghanistan
Just seeing that 8 US soldiers have been killed in bomb attacks in southern Afghanistan. That means 55 Americans have died there this month which according to AP makes this the deadliest month since operations began back in 2001.
Via the 2nd link:
Soldiers have a sixth sense about good leadership. Leadership is key to morale. When I was commanding units in Europe and the United States you made sure your troops and their families were taken care of. You made sure you fed them, equipped them for the mission and got them simple things like their mail. Commanders who failed in any one of these areas would negatively impact morale, especially on the battlefield. Hardships, danger and even death do not impact morale more than poor leadership and a soldier's sense that his chain-of-command is not taking care of him and his family back home.
