Najibullah Zazi, his Father and New York contact, Ahmad Wais Afzali, have been charged with making false statements in the investigation of a NYC bomb plot. Earlier reports indicated the FBI wished to interview the father, obviously they have.
The false statements are said to involve denying knowledge and authorship of documents bearing Zazi's fingerprints. The NY man denied tipping off Zazi to an investigation after being interviewed by the FBI about Zazi. It seems the FBI was monitoring a phone call on which it's being claimed he did just that.
The charges are part of an on going investigation and potentially a way of turning up the pressure in that, as much as anything else.
AURORA, Colorado (CNN) -- Federal agents have charged a 24-year-old Colorado resident, his father and another man with making false statements as part of an extensive terror investigation that stretches to Pakistan.
Najibullah Zazi is accused of making false statements to officials about an alleged bomb plot in the United States.
Najibullah Zazi, an Afghan national, and his father, Mohammed Wali Zazi, were arrested Saturday night in the Denver suburb of Aurora.
An acquaintance of the two men, Ahmad Wais Afzali of Flushing, New York, was also arrested. Afzali is a legal permanent resident from Afghanistan.
"Each of the defendants has been charged by criminal complaint with knowingly and willfully making false statements to the FBI in a matter involving international and domestic terrorism," the Justice Department said in a statement.

Dan,
What is interesting to me is the terrorists being busted of late were investigations that began under Dubya, that this flea was not arrested prior
to yesterday smells like obambi influence. As the obambi admin and his ag holder
have shown us in their very short time in office, our safety is not thier primary concern. What I am trying to say and rather poorly is that when one of
these terrorists is busted from start of investigation to prosecution within the
obambi admin I will rest a wee bit easier.

There was an item in the papers that the FBI accused NYPD Commissioner Kelly of jumping the gun on this investigation. Now I wonder if Kelly didn't like what was going on and thought it better to expose it rather than take the chance of something being blown up, like Grand Central Station.

“There are lots of threats to you in the world. There’s the threat of a heart attack for genetic reasons. You can’t sit there and worry about everything. Get a life. You have a much greater danger of being hit by lightning than being struck by a terrorist,” -NYC Mayor Mommy-Nanny Bloomberg
Of course, the greatest danger to all humankind is NYC being flooded away by Climate Change.

I suspect it has to be a larger network involved
9/11, Madrid, London, involved several teams of plotters. How much can one realistically get out
of Azizi with the limitations on interrogation, they let him go home?

lala,
I can't figure out if Kelly a good guy or not.
He said he knew about the obambi airforce1 flyover and did nothing to stop it,
hindsight DOINK.
That doesn't cut bait with me, he seemed like an American but now not so much.
do you have a link handy so I can get some perspective/context of what was said?
sidenote to Dan, what is it with these infolinks? what is the point of them?
is it something you as a blogger get paid to use or is it some damn setting I need to disable at my end? personally and nothing personal but I find them terribly annoying as i am so damn tired sometimes I click on them thinking they
are links to something other than remedial crap...........

Did NYPD jump the gun & ruin FBI's terror probe?
Although the NYPD's top spokesman denied a rift, sources said the FBI wanted to hold off to determine exactly what a Denver-based terror cell was planning.
Sources said the group was plotting a major terrorist attack somewhere in New York City, although the target was unclear.
The FBI felt it knew enough about the suspects and their whereabouts to delay the raids.
But, an NYPD investigator involved in the case said Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly preferred to "act too soon rather than act too late."

The problem with the criminal approach is that you have to wait until they committ a criminal offfense. Obvioulsly NYC does not want to allow a terrorist bombing just to get a conviction.
However I find it ironic that these men are charge with making false statements. I suspect that more use of the 5th amendment will be the rule from now own.
Martha Stewart was convicted on that.
I hope that he FBI is able to uncover the plot if there is one. But I think they triggered it too soon.

Kelly jumped the gun on this case because one of the snitches went bad and informed the bad guys that they were being followed and wire tapped. The jig was up. Kelly was forced to arrest them early.

Very disturbing
Intelligence Divison: Botching Its Biggest Terorrism Plot?
September 21, 2009
The NYPD’s so-called Intelligence Division apparently didn’t live up to its name, according to Justice Department documents, stemming from the arrest of three terror suspects.
In fact, the documents indicate that Deputy Commissioner David Cohen and his subordinates at Intel were clueless.
