This is instructive. Give Nancy Pelosi credit for having better political instincts than many, maybe even Snarlin' Arlen Specter. Or, is Specter playing a game here?
She moved to shut down a possible censure of Wilson for his "You lie" remark. Specter's play is especially interesting.
Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Democrats should cease efforts to sanction Rep. Joe Wilson for shouting "You lie!" during the president's address.
While she said the South Carolina Republican's action was "stunning," and noted that lawmakers can be sanctioned for calling other lawmakers liars, she said she didn't want to dwell on the incident.
Memorandum links some of the many lefties angry with Pelosi. As for Specter calling for the Censure - is it to curry favor with the PA liberals by backing Obama? Or, does he know the whole liar meme hurts Obama and health care reform, so he's trying to scrap it, at least in a very liberal form, to avoid a troubling vote? He'll be on the hot seat if needed to get something through the Senate.

Some idle observations:
1. What's really "stunning" is that a Neptune-orbiting leftist retread like Nancy Pelosi could become Speaker of the House in this day and age.
2. Having said this...
a. Pelosi is smart enough to know that if Wilson were censured it would bring up a lot of inconvenient questions about past Democratic boorish behavior towards, oh say, "Dubya" and expose them as hypocritical fools.
b. Censuring Wilson would get people to thinking, "Why did Wilson say what he said?"
c. Which, in turn, would result in lots of people looking at the whole illegal immigration healthcare thing and eventually realizing, "Hey, y'know, Wilson WAS right! Obama IS a liar!"
Queen Nancy can't have that now, can she?

Agree with MarkJ. Best to say nothing this one time.
The Democrats won't profit by bringing up what Wilson shouted. For them it is far better if people don't think about whether O tells lies.
If the Dems really get lucky other GOP people will do similar things. Then the public would react against the GOP. Let the incident be one time.

Nancy Pelosi has lost control, even if she ever had it, a long time ago.
She probably was instructed to do this, by someone, somewhere...
Nancy Pelosi has her Democrats sinking very fast, and it would be riot if all the politicians were censored for boorish behavior.
First, the HOUSE should censor Mrs. Pelosi for calling the CIA a group of "LIARS", or has everyone forgotten about that big LIE?
Did Specter rush to censor Nancy Pelosi for dishonestly slandering the CIA, after it was revealed she knew about waterboarding and supported it?
Rep. Wilson emotionally reacted to more lies from a very partisan novice, who is turning into a disaster as President.
Republicans showed the same class again, for a quick apology for the loss of decorum. It is notable, that Barack Obama could not apologize to the Police he wrongfully demeaned as acting "stupidly", on behalf of his racist Professor friend. Mr. Obama never truly apologized, and just equated the entire mess, as Hillary Clinton often does, side stepping all personal responsibility. It is a tell tale sign, of someone who cannot admit a mistake, and has either a wealth of insecurity, or a background of never really ever being challenged.
Either way, the Democratic Party's disastrous effort to take over the US Health Care Industry is as mindless as it gets.
If they do decide to "RAHM" it through, they should be forced to pay dearly in 2010.

Pelosi is doing the only thing she can do and I, for one, think that Arlen Specter is grasping at straws... any straws to find a way to prevent the inevitable end of his long career as a politician. Did they do anything about the Bush "booers" when he gave a similar speech about social security? I don't recall any Democrat apologies immediately after that event... or ever for that matter. She also knows that she wants this story to die a quick death because the more the matter gets "stirred" the more difficult her task will be to get him defeated. How many people sent money to his campaign today? A lot! Also, in order to make a big deal about it one must relate that the term "lie" and Obama's claim that illegals weren't going to be covered would have to be revisited. That's the last thing she wants.

Very true, Dave B.
It is up to each of us to make sure this doesn't die from suffocation of being swept under the DC rug.
Is Joe Wilson a hero? Most likely he doesn't think so. Nor do we need to make him one. We just need to applaud his outburst and make sure it is remembered.... remembered all the way to 2012 via the 2010 elections.
