Obama's Speech: The Creep Out Factor

Reading Obama's for the children missive takes me back to that long-haired fellow in one presidential debate babbling about the nation electing a father figure. Bleech! Well, behold, it's uncle Obama-in-Chief kids, climb on up! One on one in a classroom, sure. But in a mass address? I don't get it and I don't like it.

Aside from the general creep out factor of a POTUS who feels he needs to address the children in such a prominent way, I will take exception to this below in bold. And some of the folksy, personal crap grates, as well. All things considered, I find the whole concept a bad idea.

Leave the children to their families and the serious politcs a WH should be engaged in to the adults. What is he, Social worker in chief? Give it a freaking rest. He should have better things to do with his time than try and make the children like him. Especially considering he isn't doing so hot with the adults these days.

I know that feeling. When I was young, my family lived in Indonesia for a few years, and my mother didn’t have the money to send me where all the American kids went to school. So she decided to teach me extra lessons herself, Monday through Friday – at 4:30 in the morning.

Now I wasn’t too happy about getting up that early. A lot of times, I’d fall asleep right there at the kitchen table. But whenever I’d complain, my mother would just give me one of those looks and say, "This is no picnic for me either, buster."

The irony of course is that O is the Unions' man. Unions are not about staying in school. A lot of them don't require a high school diploma for the cradle to grave perks the U.S. taxpayer will -if O has his way -will be forced to provide. Check how much the non-retired UAW worker was earning per hour prior to the bailouts and now how much they are earning after the bailout - it's the same exact amount. So much for *shared sacrifice*....

BTW discrimination is great. It's a good thing. Discriminating between good and evil, freedom. slavery, critical thinking skills vs complaining about "unfairness", the rights of men vs. the powers of government. Learning to discriminate is a feature, not a bug, of education. The ability to discriminate between what is arbitrary, irrational, or extra-legal, and what is rational, reasonable, natural is a function of acquisition of knowledge and the powers it bestows.

Race discrimination, sex discrimination, faith discrimination are irrational and arbitrary. But discrimination is not limited to that based on irrational prejudice.

Fighting homelessness and poverty? This is the result of critical thinking skills, the object of education? So far as it means acting in one's own interests to prevent these calamities for onelself and family, and capacity to add to man's mastery of the natural world and to be charitable to others- this may be the object of education... but the goal is not to create a perfect world where everyone gets the same deal and the same breaks and the same reward no matter there individual efforts.

SarahW - you are so right, that's a pet pieve of mine for years. Discrimination can be good or bad; it's not all bad. Adults discrimiate everyday of our lives - which potential mate to become serious with, which job to pursue, which car to purchase, what food to eat, which friends to make, etc.

I'm pretty far to the right normally, but I'm not too concerned about this. In fact considering what else he might be doing (spending, spending, spending) this is no big deal. Also, whether we like it or not he is somehow a role model particularly to black children. The drop out rate is very high amongst inner city kids and if a few kids are motivated by the Hopey-Dopey-Change guy then that's probably a good thing.

I am able to live with the speech that has been posted today, although I would have preferred it to be a little more student/nation centric instead of student/President-centric. That said, there is absolutely no doubt that this speech is a different speech than was originally planned by the WH before the sh*t hit the fan. Number one, this speech does not match/meld well with the questions and lesson plans which had been previously sent out to schools to "enhance" the original version. And, number two, had this version been the "original" speech, it would surely have immediately been released to the public on the very first day the ruckus arose-- in an attempt by the WH to tamp down the furor and to embarrass the rabble rousers. That could not happen because they realized the speech had to be significantly reworked once its problems came to light. The speech to be given to the schools tomorrow has ovbiously been rewritten, but that is OK, and our country and kids are better served because enough concerned citizens made their feelings known.

My parents taught me that when I became a parent there were many responsibilities that I would have to undertake. Among those responsibilities were to teach my kinds to be responsible citizens, study and work hard, have faith in a loving God who holds us accountable for our actions, obey the laws of the land, don't lie, steal or cheat, treat others as I want to be treated, pay your taxes, be generous with those in need, be willing to serve your country when called on, Etc,Etc.
All these values I endeavored to instill in my children and grandchildren over the last 38 years. I never asked the government for help or advice in how to raise my kids. I thought it was responsibility to take care of my family even when times got rough and lean. My church and family were always there to pitch in when things got bad.
My question is why did the President think it was necessary to stick his nose in my business and start telling my kids and grandkids how he thinks they ought to behave and what their values ought to be? Frankly, with my own past dealing with govenmental entities they have proven not to do a very good job, even to the point of taking a bad situation and making it a wjhole lot worse. Am I doing something wrong and the executive branch of the government needs to administer a attitude adjustment to my kids? I don't run around my neighborhood telling all my neighbors how to raise their kids and I'll bet if I did so I'd be sporting a fat lip before lunch.
We seem to place a preminum on "privacy". We even go as far as to disallow wiretapping of know terrorists because we don't want to invade their "privacy". I want at least as much consideration for me and my family as the terrorists get. Give me some "privacy" and butt out of my family business. Raise your own kids to be the kind of citizens you desire. Leave my kids alone.
