Though I alluded to the Mighty Casey when scoring a win for Palin with the Death Panel remark, that doesn't mean I'm unmindful of Yogi Berra's quip: "It ain't over til it's over".
As Michelle Malkin points out, we're looking at a trial balloon, not a surrender flag. She's updating as it goes forward. More than most, this administration is comprised of ideologues first and politicians second. And we've already seen their willingness to employ any tactic to win. Recall Obama telling us how badly the stimulus plan must be passed Now! But the reality was always that the program would languish in government's hands, rolling out more to help in the mid-terms, if at all, than an immediate boost.
Politico says the White House has “backed away.”
I’m not buying the hype. Are you?
The real Obama is a declared proponent of single-payer and universal health care Trojan Horses. All else is political theater.
Late Sunday, the health care czar’s office said Sebelius “misspoke.”
Ideologues, and Obama and company are that, are different than politicians. A compromise is a defeat for them. And the children of Saul Alinsky come home to roost in the White House these days. That's more power than Alinsky could have ever dreamed of having. And it is not something to turn your back on.
The media won't watch them. There are no public watchdogs on the prowl, except perhaps for some few politicians on the Right. It's time to be vigilant, to remain engaged. And I wouldn't count on much respite between now and 2010 if we're lucky. That could be out last chance to restore any sanity to our government, again. Unchecked, by 2012, too much may have already slipped beyond the people's control.
And it isn't only Obama we have to be concerned about. The GOP has its governmentalists, too. And they'd like nothing better than to be a part of a Washington, DC that gets to tell everybody just what to do and when. It's time to tamp down that tendency inside a faction of the GOP, too.

Vicious, destructive, relentless. This is the Left. There are no exceptions, not throughout history, none. Conservatives should always keep this in mind. Compromise in any form is a degradation to the Left; a reminder of a world that remains unfinished, still unsanctified by their holiness, still populated by heathens with which they are humiliatingly forced to commingle. While not all democrats in congress are leftists, it is the Left that holds the power today. For the first time in our history, we have a Leftist presidency.
When I heard word of the so-called surrender on the "public option," I laughed. This is the great prize for the Left. Give it up? Are you kidding? They will tell any lie, destroy any person or group, pull any gambit, and scorch all earth to get this.

rrpjr, Michelle Malkin agrees with you and Dan: http://michellemalkin.com/2009/08/17/white-house-public-option-ploy-a-trial-balloon-not-a-white-flag/

Hmmm, I don't see a plan here, I see an Obama white house that doesn't know WTF they're doing, why else would they be waffling all over the place on this--the CENTERPIECE--they say of their whole reason for being? Seibelus misspoke? Give me a break.
It looks to me like Obama, always campaigning and always the politician, doesn't at this point care what is in the bill as long as something passes that he can take credit for...that's why the goal posts are constantly shifting, the president doesn't know what he wants other than to claim victory, he doesn't know how to apply pressure to Congressional Dems because he hasn't ever had to manage anything his entire life.

For years, it has been said that the US, under the aegis of NATO, allowed European countries the luxury of having low defense expenditures.
Can the same be said for health care ?
Will US health care reform be a foreign policy nightmare ?

Clarifying on the Palin thing:
The "death panel" is the panel of bureaucrats that will ration care, presumably based on Ezekiel Emanuel's Complete Lives System since his advising the President on health care and also advising the Budget Office, dovetailing economics with disabled and old people rather seamlessly, I might add. Palin claimed no win on the "death panel" issue. In fact, she came out again in a response against that panel.
The Senate Finance Committee did drop the financial incentive for doctors to obtain living wills from patients, a win that could rightly be credited to Palin.....but the "death panel" always was the bigger issue and remains in the legislation. I think it's on page 30 of HR 3200.
