While realizing Rich has always been fairly crazed in his liberal rhetoric, between the Clift item below and Rich equating the NRA and Hamas as "self-appointed militias," I wonder if Big Media isn't sinking down into the same bizarre black hole of self deception Obama seems to be sinking on health care reform. Is the liberal wing really prepared to destroy the Democrat Party once and for all? And so soon after a big win at the polls?
But the hidden kicker is Rich's argument that 9/11 didn't do enough to dispatch America's traditional fear of government. Isn't that the very thing he has been arguing for years when it came to the Bush presidency? That Americans were giving over too much of their fear of government to Bush due to that very thing? Note to Frank Rich, maybe right now it's agenda-driven liberals like you America doesn't trust, more than they have always distrusted Big Government?
Coburn is nothing if not consistent. In the aftermath of the Oklahoma City bombing, he was part of a House contingent that helped delay and soften an antiterrorism bill. This cohort even tried to strip out a provision blocking domestic fund-raising by foreign terrorist organizations like Hamas. Why? The far right, in league with the National Rifle Association, was angry at the federal government for aggressively policing America’s self-appointed militias. In a 1996 floor speech, Coburn conceded that “terrorism obviously poses a serious threat,” but then went on to explain that the nation had worse threats to worry about: “There is a far greater fear that is present in this country, and that is fear of our own government.” As his remarks on “Meet the Press” last week demonstrated, the subsequent intervention of 9/11 has not changed his worldview.

Odd, who was the candidate who was endorsed by Hamas's political director, last fall.

Our goverment gives money to Hamas right? Do they give money to the NRA?

Perhaps Rich has forgotten that one of the purposes of the Second Amendment was to keep religious totalitarians such as Hamas from ever taking over this country.

"Self-appointed militias" were all that held-back the National Socialists at the Warsaw Ghetto. It was self-appointed militias that Washington patched together to form the American revolutionary forces.
It is not, then, axiomatic that "self-appointed militias" are all of them evil. Nor is it axiomatic that state-sanctioned forces are all of them benign. So one has to wonder exactly what advantage Rich sought in making such a comparison?
CHSW makes one of many points Rich appears to have never learned. Bl**dy public schools.

Strange indeed, especially since Hamas was created with money from Israel as a counter to the Palestinian Liberation Organization (you see, a divided Palestine is a safe target) - can't have Palestinians coming together as they would put down the apartheid for sure.
Israel is responsible for Hamas because without her, it wouldn't exist.
Everything is smoke & mirrors. All of it.
This red-blue rift is ridiculous but it does work to keep you...divided and not realizing you and the other side have the same enemy.

"This red-blue rift is ridiculous but it does work to keep you...divided and not realizing you and the other side have the same enemy."
DAMN!! I wish I'd said that.

"divided and not realizing you and the other side have the same enemy."
Which same enemy? Who's that? China? Sorry - I'm not making sense of it.
And this business of "apartheid". You mean "apartheid" in the way that Arabs and Christians can live in Israel, but Christians and Jews are persecuted and ejected from Arab lands? Or the way that women are officially worth half that of a man in Iran or Saudi Arabia? Or the way some cultures practice "honor" killings - you mean that sort of apartheid?

"divided and not realizing"
While usually true, it doesn't serve just now. The Far Left is running the D Party. Their agenda is big gov uber alles. Meanwhile, conservatives are fighting elitist Republicans on their own big gov mentality. If the Dems want to re-take control from the uber lib fringe, you might again have a point. As it stands now, the enemy in power in DC is pretty clear and conservatives are doing what they can to take back the R party from the elitists.

Frank Rich: Living proof of what happens when one spends too much time a) in Manhattan, b) getting oneself invited to trendy restaurant openings, and c) carousing with Off-Broadway chorus boys.
Don't let this happen to you!

PUH-LEEEEEESE If the NRA was really like Hamas, Rich, Maureen Dowd and other wankers from the NYT would've already had a C4 enema when they turned on their cars ignition.

Interesting that the liberal media seems to be struggling to knit together the idea of right wingers as anti-American, un-patriotic, gun loving hate mongers. The large majority of tax payers in this country, at this point in time, are conservatives. A large majority of conservatives are in their peak earning years(45 years old and older) who have worked many years, raised families, and look forward to their retirement.
Now the Obama administration expects to increase their taxes, limit their medical care(do you really need that hip replacement at your age?), and not expect them to put up a fight with their congressman, when that same congressman insists on voting in line with the liberal leaders in both houses of Congress.
The liberal media, liberal educators, liberal political parties, liberal labor unions, liberal community organizations, and liberal immigrant advocacy groups; all seek to place a noose around the collective necks of conservatives to ultimately place themselves in PERMANENT CONTROL of all facets of government.

Leftist liberals and their self-centered shills (frank rich) know that the 2nd amendment was specifically written with folks like them in mind.
You know the folks who 'know better than the average man how to run the country and stuff and if it weren't for that pesky vote thing, why the country would be a better place'.
That's why the knee-jerk reaction to the 2nd amendment; THEY TAKE IT PERSONALLY. And well they should.
