Priceless:
After the toughest week yet for health reform, leading Democrats are warning that the party likely will have to accept major compromises to get a bill passed this year – perhaps even dropping a proposal to create a government-run plan that is almost an article of faith among some liberals. Read more:
I thought articles of faith weren't permitted by today's socialists disguised as liberals? Oh, well.
They certainly don't want to embarrass their messiah by being petulant and forcing him to take a loss, right? Not that he will for them in any event.
Looks like the libs might gain some experience with Obama's rule number one: it's all about me, folks. I must succeed in passing a plan, or I'll look like a failure. So what if you look like rubes for supporting me all this time. It isn't as if you, or the principle really matter all that much, right?
Also, if this goes down this way, the aura of the invincible one - the all things to all people second coming, newcomer that he is, is gone.
Let the bleeding begin. Not bad to see him weakened so early on in his term. Funny thing about mystique ... once it develops a crack, all sorts of forces start applying pressure to widen any gap in the facade. Republicans, if they win this, have to keep the pressure on and not let up. I'd wager Obama will pivot and shift to immigration reform, as he sees it as more troubling ground for conservatives, ground upon which he's more likely to see compromise among the GOP.
But will they cooperate as they might have before any weakness was exposed? Well, it is the GOP of John McCain, so I wouldn't be surprised. Interesting times, folks, interesting times.
If Obama is smart, he'll attempt to drive a wedge between Republicans and much of their base at this point to even up the score. The game is on, not over. Don't kid yourself. It's still going to be a long four years, especially for Republicans and conservatives.

Ok, honestly, I watched only about 1 minute of the CO "townhall" of Obama's.
I swear he said that, no, a "public option" did not mean taxpayer funded...and no we can't just have the Fed write a check.
Now I'm really confused...how silly of me. Or maybe I was dreaming???

(actually, failing to mention conrad's position and utternace, in the politco article would suggest they sanitized it as well.)

The right's position will always suffer if Palin is allowed to drive the bus.

Locke,
Wow!!!! That was just about the freakin' most brilliant thing I've read all year! Did you pick up those skillz at some amazing ivy league school? Man, I can only dream about expressing myself in such an exquisite manner. I literally felt a thrill run up my leg.

Hehehe! How the mighty have already fallen! And I agree, Dan, the lefty rats have taken a hit, but they aren't done yet. Thus, we must be even more vigilent.

But the bill [H.R. 1 EH AKA "stimulus"] goes further. One new bureaucracy, the National Coordinator of Health Information Technology, will monitor treatments to make sure your doctor is doing what the federal government deems appropriate and cost effective. The goal is to reduce costs and “guide” your doctor’s decisions.

I hope all LIBERAL ASS DEMS GET THERE FLU SHOTS. They can have mine. I think I will pass on this one. Never have taken any kind of flu shots in my life. Don't need one now. Especially this one. Will just take my chances. If I get it then so be it. I would rather be sick with the flu than not have the ability to breath anymore !!! Our wonderful government at work !

Swine flu jab link to killer nerve disease: Leaked letter reveals concern of neurologists over 25 deaths in America.
A warning that the new swine flu jab is linked to a deadly nerve disease has been sent by the Government to senior neurologists in a confidential letter.
The letter from the Health Protection Agency, the official body that oversees public health, has been leaked to The Mail on Sunday, leading to demands to know why the information has not been given to the public before the vaccination of millions of people, including children, begins.
It tells the neurologists that they must be alert for an increase in a brain disorder called Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), which could be triggered by the vaccine.
GBS attacks the lining of the nerves, causing paralysis and inability to breathe, and can be fatal.
The letter, sent to about 600 neurologists on July 29, is the first sign that there is concern at the highest levels that the vaccine itself could cause serious complications.
It refers to the use of a similar swine flu vaccine in the United States in 1976 when:
More people died from the vaccination than from swine flu.
500 cases of GBS were detected.
The vaccine may have increased the risk of contracting GBS by eight times.
The vaccine was withdrawn after just ten weeks when the link with GBS became clear.
The US Government was forced to pay out millions of dollars to those affected.

Pardon me if this is a duplicate post...
"If Obama is smart, he'll attempt to drive a wedge between Republicans and much of their base at this point to even up the score."
Dan, what's your thought on this? I kinda sorta hope the Dems will make the attempt. Bush "the Compassionate" opened up a crack between the two, and it swallowed Congress in '04 and the WH in '08. On the one side of it stood McCain voting with the squishies for TARP, on the other, Palin with a vast sea of conservatives and libertarians a "heartbeat" away...
At present, there's an evolving libertarian-conservative movement or coalition evolving. Stacy McCain is typical of the conservative side of it; Eric Dondero of the libertarian side.
http://www.libertarianrepublican.blogspot.com/
http://rsmccain.blogspot.com/
Palin, and Jindal, and Rubio... those of that mold, of the mold forged by Reagan are what we will support.
If the Dems do try it - the alienation of the extant Republican leadership and the Base will encourage significant change - precisely of the Reaganite sort encouraged by the likes of Dondero and McCain "the Other."
All I know is that Hillary is waiting in the wings. Another Republican squish... and she will be President in '12.
Posted by: Ran | Saturday, August 15, 2009 at 11:35 PM
dan,
You miss the point. the base as already left the GOP leadership. Obama can not drive a wedge there. It is already gone. yes most conservatives will vote for the GOP as the lesser of two evils but most conservatives will not fund not work for the gop leadership. If amnesty is tried by Obama he will more likely drive a bigger wedge between his liberal base on the blue dog dems. Most of the blue dogs were to the right of the GOP on amnesty in 2006 and 08. Just like they were to the right on fiscal matters too. at leaset in the campaigns. amnesty will be a major miscalculation of Obama and could seal the doom of his presidency. the GOp already had that fight and lost its base. If the dems have the fight they will keep there base but lose the middle. And then Obama will be down to 30%-40% approval. I mean how hard is it to run to the right of complete amnesty for everyone? the GOP that would support it have already supported TARP and stimulus etc so they have nothing to lose.

'Mystique' shattered? Perhaps. But what's happening, IMO, is this: Dems put out the worst case, i.e., a massive bill that they knew wouldn't fly. Now they've got Reps in committee, and they (Dems) are quietly backing off on the worst parts of the bill...particularly the national insurance scam. What they'll end up with is a bill that stinks just a bit less, maybe without the government insurance, but that will still be the first step toward a NHS. Reps will claim victory, but so will Obama...and he'll claim it was Dems 'bipartisanship' that got these 'reforms' in place. 'Reforms' like community rating, that'll fail nationally the same way it is failing in states like NJ and NY. The MSM will pop the champagne, lick some Obama ass, and we will be f___ed.

Government has no business poking about our health care. Medicare is a disaster and this bill will not get passed the way it is now, but they will pass something. It will be the camel's nose under the tent.
Government regs and no tort reform are responsible for the high cost of insurance.

"The right's position will always suffer if Palin is allowed to drive the bus."
Really? Truly? Looks like Sarah Palin chalked up a big win with her "death panel" comment:
http://prescriptions.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/08/13/senate-bill-will-not-address-end-of-life-care/
Seems to me some senators actually took the time to read what was in the bill, collectively smacked their foreheads, and muttered, "Oh s***, Palin's on to something."
Yeah, Locke, Sarah Palin is indeed driving the bus and....it's rolling right over Obama Wan Kenobi.

Rush Limbaugh believes Blue Dogs can kill this bill, he is absolutely giddy about it, but what if he is wrong? More from Dr. Lawrence Hunter of RhinoCare here: http://www.socialsecurityinstitute.com/slideshow/slide-2/#Rhinocare.

Oh gee, great. We can switch from the Democratic party sprinting towards socialism to the Republican party that merely jogs casually towards it. Oh the relief!
I don't get the Palin-mania at all. Yes, she was the least corrupt person involved in the last presidential race (but that's just damning with faint praise). Yes, she's more experienced than Obama (ditto), and is almost as charismatic. That being said, she has nowhere near the depth needed to be a good president. Sorry conservatives, but pinning your hopes to her is just setting yourself up for serious disappointment.

Funny how libs can't stop talking about Sarah Palin. Never any substantive debate, just jabs at Palin.
Posted by: John K | Sunday, August 16, 2009 at 02:31 AM
To respond to some questions above. I think the point about a gap already existing on the Right is a valid one. But gaps can heal in time. A fight on immigration won't help that, so both points are somewhat valid.
Also, no one has mentioned the economy as it stands now. That would make an immigration move even worse for Obama. However, he has floated promises to his Hispanic constituents to do it. The history of the debate suggests they will hold him to account and they put on big parades. Next Spring could be critical - in May.
Obama is learning the minefield that accompanies genuine responsibilities for important things, something he has never known before in his entire life. So far, he isn't handling it very well.
As for Sarah Palin, other than liking the image she conveys and seeing a charismatic appeal that is truly amazing, perhaps besting Reagan's, I didn't see enough in 2008 to believe she's ready to be POTUS. However, unlike some, I don't think she's the least bit dumb, unable to get up to speed quickly, or somehow doomed in 2012, or beyond due to the past. I'm more than willing to give her time and space to prove herself and, in some important ways, I hope she succeeds.
I think that's the prudent middle ground on her between the two extremes, pro and con, which get the most attention. It may even be where most Americans are. Also, as I've posted, she could easily run, or not - in any case, not get the nod in 2012, then campaign vigorously for another nominee in exchange for Sec. Energy. It would be a great role for her, give her children time to mature and, she's so young, Palin has years of political viability before her if she wants them.
Whatever the case, I believe her options are wide open and observation of current moves, which is all I have to go on, suggest she wants to be a big player in 2010. I want her there due to her ability to raise money and bring interest to solid Right-side pols. That's a big part of why I decided to start pushing back on these pathetic lib Alaskan bloggers that want to destroy her.
We can not allow the Left to damage, or destroy our leaders, or potential leaders and take it on the chin. It's time to fight back with all we've got, taking a page from their own play book if that's what works. Screw those bastards. I want their asses in a world of hurt, each and every one of them. This week, I may address that important topic in a post. If we allow the left to do it to anyone on the Right without paying a price, we will see more of it elsewhere, not less. It's how they work.
Time and opportunity will dictate my future blogging efforts in that regard, not the handwringing of any effete political snobs. If I had the cash, I'd hop a plane to Anchorage and start really investigating their actions, connections and much more.
It's time for those on the Right to realize we are fighting for the political future of this country, which goes a long way toward defining the very country itself, given government's existing too long reach. If you aren't serious and ready to fight for the more traditional America we value as Conservatives, than STFU and get out of the way.

Obama set it up so he can insist on a bill at any cost. He let Pelosi and co. write whatever they wanted. Implicit in that is, you have to pass it.
He can now insist the pass something, having blown their load on an unpopular idea.

"Oh gee, great. We can switch from the Democratic party sprinting towards socialism to the Republican party that merely jogs casually towards it. Oh the relief!"
I like that! The repugnicans had eight years to groom a candidate for 2008 and Johnny Mac was the best they could come up with? Now they're doing nothing about 2012 but licking their wounds frm 2008. So some are throwing Sarah P's name about to ensure four more years of Das Obimeister. Real conservatives allowed RINOs to take over the GOP and lord knows the demonrats gave into the libs decades ago........and now we're going to pay.
