Are you ready to be forced to contribute to every strike fund that comes down the pike, no matter what the reason, or strike demand? Because you would be if this bill passes.
If I weren't reading it on a Congressman's own site, I wouldn't believe it. What's next, full unemployment assistance for strikers? Or, should government reimburse companies for production losses? Point being, it isn't government's role to take any side in every strike that comes about. And that's precisely what this bill would bring about.
Washington, DC – Today, Congressman Joe Baca (D-Rialto) introduced legislation to ensure workers who are on strike have access to federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits [SNAP is the new name for the federal food stamp program]. The Worker Eligibility Fairness Act amends the Food and Nutrition Act of 2008 to remove the food stamp ineligibility of individuals who participate in a strike.
“I am pleased with the expansion in federal feeding programs we were able to include in the 2008 farm bill,” concluded Rep. Baca. “But in this time of economic uncertainty, we have a moral obligation to do everything in our power to assist working families in putting food on the table. I am proud to introduce this responsible bill, which will give workers on strike the temporary access to nutrition benefits necessary to ensure their families are properly fed.”
If an individual chooses to walk off a job in hopes of negotiating a better deal, it is not every taxpayer's responsibility to contribute to what amounts to a strike fund. If one wants to do that, they can do it now. In effect, Baca's bill would make that madatory.
It's bad enough that government decided we have to own GM. With this move, if the workers want to strike against us as the part owners, we'd have to feed them as well. This is beyond ridiculous. It's quite liberally insane!

There is something going on with Bank of America - the SEIU is trying to force them to unionize their tellers and clerical staff.

I might be convinced if it were limited to food stamps for spouse and children, nothing for the striker. Or maybe not, but at least I'd think about it.
