So says this writer who is ecstatic about the "New Republican Party" that he says Steele is creating.

I on the other hand doubt Republicans can out pander the Democrats on the issue of "Identity Politics"(Racial Politics). As long as Republicans choose to fight the Democrats on battlefields of the Democrat's own choosing they will lose. It's simple Sun Tzu.

The Republican party continues to go further and further away from the direction we need it to go for a vehicle of positive change. I feel that the only option left to us is a new party because even if the Republicans win next time I don't see them as significantly enough different from what we have now.

Could Palin win as a Republican? I believe she could. But to do so she will first have to go through Michael Steele. He will continue to throw roadblocks in her way as long as he remains chair of the RNC. In fact unless Michael Steele is first defeated, I don't think Palin could indeed win the party nomination.

I also spoke with a few locals who were angry that the press did nothing to promote Sarah Palin's visit. And yet 20,000 people showed up! It was an unforgettable day.

I was going to mention that I had first come across Adrienne's delightful blog when she posted about that visit in Auburn; I am so happy for all who were able to share a fantastic day.

Adrienne is an inspiration, what a fine spirit and depth of conviction she holds.

I had not been following Team Sarah but I think I will now because I missed a great opportunity to go to Auburn and meet great Americans.

my nieces, 12 and 16, went to see her in NC, during the campaign. both have started running avidly since. they were in good shape before, but are in even better shape now.

I tease them a bit about their "hero", but I am so glad for what palin has done for them. They see her as an atheletic mother, and admire her character as well.

The Republicans have a particular need to find seemingly "salt of the earth" types to present as their public face. The Republicans are well aware that their pro-industry, pro-wealthy-aristocrat agenda needs figureheads that are more likely to be sympathetic to middle-class, rank-and-file voters. So we get people like Sarah Palin or "Joe the Plumber" being promoted, or the truly aristocratic George W. Bush made over to be a "regular guy whom you'd like to have a beer with," while the actual policies are set by industry lobbyists and Washington fat-cats.

Meanwhile, people like the Obamas or Bill Clinton are mocked as out-of-touch elitists even though they had truly humble beginnings. Needing to cloak their aristocrat-friendly policies in a friendly and seemingly humble face is the whole reason for the conservatives' constant culture war agitation. They need to distract the people who they themselves see as rubes so they won't realize who's more on their side. That gives rise to the peculiar phenomenon of seeing regular people out in the streets at tea parties and so forth, protesting for the right of big business to live without the burden of government regulation, so they can screw regular people over with impunity.

As far as role models go, mark, I'd say that if your side antes-up with the Palins, then our side can counter with the Obamas. Both are fit, attractive couples of about the same age range, all with relatively humble beginnings. The only difference, I guess, is that one couple will most likely never set foot in the White House. (Sorry, that last bit was a cheap-shot, but I couldn't help myself.)

Mark, it's sadly typical of right wingers -- and says more about their own character than anyone else's -- that they so stubbornly refuse to give any credit where credit is due. Anybody ought to know that schools like Harvard and Oxford give recognition to top-level students, and if those students aren't from wealthy families, they make sure they get scholarships to pay for educations that would otherwise be beyond their means. Clinton and the Obamas came from humble beginnings and only got admitted to places like Harvard and Oxford because they worked hard and were very, very smart. You may not like them or support their policies, but it's petty to pretend that they were born with silver spoons in their mouths (in contrast to George W. Bush). Whatever they achieved in their lives, they earned though hard work and brains.

Most of the extremist conservatives who post at sites like this aren't interested in the truth, or even in a fair debate. They just want to wallow in the society of other wing nuts and posture for each other about how much they hate Obama, or Clinton, or whomever the object of their ire happens to be at any given time. It's all petty and personality-based, because wing nuts know little about policy and care even less. Conservative politics is all about manipulating the feelings of pathetic rubes to help big shots make money and further entrench their political power.

Palin was supposed to have been eye candy to serve the interests of the elites, but the Republican leadership got more than they bargained for. Even as they tried to drop her like a bad habit when her political and personal liabilities became too burdensome, Palin has exerted her own loose-cannon personality and, I think, come back to haunt them. The Republican big-shots are embarrassed by her small-town antics, but their "salt of the earth" game requires that they handle her with kid gloves, so as not to offend the rubes. They may not ALL diss her publicly, but they'll never let her near a presidential ticket again, I promise. It's not just Palin. It's Standard Operating Procedure for Republicans to pose as "salt of the earth" types (even if they're born of the uber-aristocratic Bush family) so they can appeal to the simpletons they will ultimately screw over. Even if they're wealthy movie stars like Reagan or Schwarzenegger, they're inevitably portrayed as anti-elitist and down-to-earth. With Reagan it was his folksy manner; with Schwarzenegger, it's the cigar-chomping, Hummer-driving machismo. They like to put the image of a charismatic personality in the place of more mundane qualities like leadership, moral courage, or knowing what the hell you're doing. It works perfectly for Republicans, because their ACTUAL policies tend to go against the interests of regular middle-class people, so they get to focus instead on personalities and petty culture-war themes.

Now don't get me wrong. By "simpletons" or "rubes," I don't mean just regular, middle-class people. I come from pretty regular stock myself, and can't claim any elite status in the world for sure. But there is something really pathetic about people who are too clueless to know when they're being patronized, manipulated and screwed-over by slick hucksters. Anybody who would allow themselves to be taken in by the likes of an Eric Kantor or a Mitch McConnell is definitely a rube.

I figure it would probably have to be done at a boxing ring, and to make it legal we would have to wear gloves. Not consistent with my training, as I would want to put you in a chokehold within 10 seconds, and you would 'nod' off, without any real pain, in another 10 seconds, but outside of ufc, there really isn't a legal venue for me to put you at risk.

I'm over 40, so I might get a little winded punching you in the face, with gloves, but the joy of seeing you panic as you realize what you got yourself into would be worth the sweat.

make sure you have a good neck muscles. If you aren't in good shape, it will snap when I hit you, even with gloves and with you wearing head gear. You should wear a mouthguard, but it probably wouldn't save you from a broken jaw. i have broken three in my 'career'. theirs, not mine.

fwiw, I'm 220, with a 16% body fat, and barely six feet. I'm not VERY strong, but this is a relative issue. speed is the thing.

Sure, I can dish it out when provoked -- and Slide certainly can more than handle his end of a battle of wits -- but I'm here more to challenge ideas than to insult people. If it gets a bit rumble-tumble sometimes, then I guess that's the price you sometimes pay for a frank discussion. But I make what I think is a good-faith effort to be honest and fact-based as much as possible, and usually respond respectfully if I'm approached in the same spirit.
