Thanks For The Car Down Payment Taxpayers

Yes, it sounds wonderful. Get some old cars getting high gas mileage off the road and give automakers (I mean, the UAW and the government) a boost. But how comforting is it to a likely majority of individuals like me who have a newer car that gets decent mileage? The one I had to provide a trade-in and down payment for and still get to pay off at the end of every month without any help from Uncle Sam - I mean, me and other taxpayers. But it always feels so good to share.

Republicans did try to defeat the measure. But that effort failed, as Obama rallied the Democrats. Change and sharing the wealth isn't always the feel good moment one might assume, especially when you have no say in the matter and bust your butt to drive a decent automobile on your own.

The Senate passed the Cash for Clunkers Program today, which gives consumers with cars that get less than 18 miles per gallon the ability to turn them in for a $3,500 or $4,500 cash voucher. The bill was nearly defeated by Republicans, but Democratic support saved the day in part due to Obama's lobbying of the program. The President still needs to sign the bill into law.

Although many people believe that the program is designed to reduce global warming emissions through the eradication of gas guzzling cars, its true purpose is to help out struggling automakers and car dealers with new car sales. A person who receives a credit as part of the program cannot buy a used car with the monies. Car sales in 2009 are predicted to be nearly half of what they were in 2008.

I think the $400 tax cut specifically targeting employed citizens which I fully support reveals what I think of employment. I think the 15% capital gains tax rate reveals exactly what your party thinks about employment. You've got Obama rewarding the working class and Bush rewarding the royalty-check / inheritance class.

Of course, unemployment itself isn't funny. We're looking at 10% unemployment nationwide in a month or two. And if Dan got laid off from a genuine blue/white collar job - say, if his car dealership got axed by a bankrupt auto industry - I'd feel for him. But Dan hasn't had an honest job in years. When he was cheer leading Bush's economic brilliance in '05 and '06, he was unemployed. When he was deriding the Pelosi/Reid Congress in '07 and '08, he was unemployed. Actually, do you know what else is covered under capital gains?Home sales. Stock sales, either directly or as part of a 401(k). All things that literally millions of working-class Americans have, do, and are affected by. Your screaming about raising capital-gains taxes would directly affect those millions of working-class individuals by imposing crushing taxes on their sale of a home, their sale of stock, their tapping their retirement savings, and numerous other things.

I had a friend who worked in retail at Ross (outlet clothing store) in high school and a number of others that did the fast food / retail / pizza delivery job thing. I have a feeling dealers are going to automatically increase prices because of the increased demand (artificial) for lower MPG cars. So the thousands of savings from this bill for consumers is not entirely accurate. The demand will increase prices and you'll get a voucher from increased prices. I'm certain some markets you'll come out even as if they never offered this voucher. It is poorly written legislation.
