Drudge has an image of Sotomayor on crutches up. Having heard that she has Type 1 Diabetes and noticing she looks somewhat overweight, I was thinking, that might not bode well for her health. Good thing I looked it up, before just popping off.
Gaining body fat may be a good thing, at least for people with type 1 diabetes, say researchers at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health. Their study, being presented at the 68th Scientific Sessions of the American Diabetes Association in San Francisco, followed 655 patients with type 1 diabetes for 20 years and found that patients who gained weight over time were less likely to die.
To be candid, she doesn't exactly strike me as the healthiest nominee I've ever seen. Most nominees these days tend to look youngish and fit - the picture of health. I suspect that's because the POTUS that nominated them wants to leave his mark on the court. But if anything, Sotomayor's weight may be a hedge against succumbing to her disease. You learn something new everyday.

Diabetes runs in both my family and my wife's family so are pretty familiar with it. We have never heard that gaining weight is good for diabetes - it is always argued that the opposite is true.
As for Sotomayor it would be nicer to defeat her on her judicial temperment/skills than hoping she doesn't live long.

"found that patients who gained weight over time were less likely to die"
i bet there is a really good correlation, but sincerely doubt a cause and effect.

Did they give her a breatalyzer test? Staggering around an aiport ususally means one thing....to much Captain Morgan or Ron Cañita Cura'o !

Mark - true. There is the argument that since she appears to be a judicial lightweight that the GOP should let her get on the court as she won't be able to advance liberal causes much.

I don't support her. It's a low blow to say she is fat and diabetic therefore she should be confirmed because she may die young. Sandra Day O'connor and Ruth Ginsburg both has cancer. They actually supported each other during these troubled times. Pick on her views ,opinions etc. but a personal matter like her health should be off limits.

"Sandra Day O'connor and Ruth Ginsburg both has cancer."
The Teachers Unions and the sad state of American education strikes again!

I wasn't saying that at all. Wouldn't even have blogged it if I didn't find the diabetes info interesting.
