Update: Video from presser. It's a South Carolina story now, as far as I'm concerned. Not that the media will let it go. Doesn't really rise to a McGreevey level, though.

Update: Admits affair. Resigns as Chair of GOP Gov's Assoc.
Via Politico on Twitter - yeah, it's going to hurt. Personally and professionally. Oh well, that's the way it goes. I didn't know that much about him anyway.
Gov. Sanford promises to lay out a "larger story..It's gonna hurt, and we'll let the chips fall where they may. apologize to wife and 4 boys

if it is demonstrated that the governor is not of sound mind and incapable of a coherent thought, he should be removed from office, immediately.

I have no doubt the state of South Carolina has a process for that, Tim.
I do have to ask -- does the "sound mind and coherent thought" standard apply to the Vice President? Because Biden's been falling short on that...

He could use the McGreevy Defense (ex Gov of NJ)
"I am a horny heterosexual American"

So sad. I dread to think that it will be some scandalous thing ala Jeff Gannon.
and Sanford otherwise seemed to be a potential candidate who held promise in an otherwise blighted field called the "GOP".

Why does it seem(or be really)that all these politicians are in politics because they have failed at everything else. The Scum Also Rises. As for his being horny he should just admit it and get on with his life. Why do they have to be such hypocrites? Oh that's right because they are politicians. Or is it the other way around?
Posted by: joeb | Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at 03:04 PM
Quite a conundrum for the TV People; will they run the Sanford story 24/7 for the next four weeks in order to kill off another Republican politician or focus on running 24/7 for the next four weeks about the glories of Obamacare?
Kill the Republican or save Obama's ass? Which story will the TV People choose to report ad nauseum?
Posted by: syn | Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at 03:09 PM
What is it about politicians that they can't stay true to their wedding vows?
What ever happened to saying "Sorry I'm flattered but I'm happily married" (As Eddie Murphy said in Trading Places "This kinda thing happen to me ever week!")
I am celebrating 28 years of marriage in September and I actually meant it when I stood up there in front of the priest.
These guys are simply too weak to be control if the "football"! It's better that they get busted before they make it to POTUS! Though it didn't seem to stop Bill from dropping a few "passion pancakes" along the way!
Hell next you'll have an admitted coke head become POTUS! (oop's sorry too late!)

"will they run the Sanford story 24/7 for the next four weeks in order to kill off another Republican politician . . ."
They wouldn't have to. Sanford killed off himself. But seriously, from the GOP's standpoint, better to find out about it now than during a campaign. Same thing with John Edwards.

i respect sanford, but never saw him as the next reagan.
we need visionaries. sorry, sarah. jindal lives.

"Same thing with John Edwards."
Now THERE is a case to contrast this with.

Who cares?
The country is FALLING APART, and yet, again, everyone is transfixed by a politician's private life. I didn't care that McGreevy was a closet homosexual, didn't care that Spitzer had hookers on speed dial, absolutely did not care about Bill Clinton's WH blow job and don't care about this.
Posted by: Anon | Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at 04:02 PM
"Who cares?"
i do. just a tad though...
when freud made his observations about humans and sex, he relied upon observing primates in zoo. the monkeys were banging all the time, and he simply believed that it was a characteristic of humans as well. Eventually, people observed that monkeys in the wild tend to follow a mating season, and go without considering sex for much of their lives. This led to the further understanding that when monkeys are under stress(boredom is a form of stress) they seek out sexual stimulation.
sanford may have been a conservative, but the clauses that he violated were not in his contract to be a politician...
he took a marriage vow. if he didn't believe in his oath to the person he loved at the time he married, I really would not hold much faith in ANY of his future oaths. hypocrisy? he defends the sanctity of marriage against homosexuals, while p*ssing his own "sacred marriage" away.
the reason I care:
this guy holds a position of responsility and his base urges can bring him to violate his own self sworn conduct. IF he can be swayed by sex, he can be bribed. Any horn dog politician who is married can be caught up in a blackmail scheme. A hooker, a digital camera, and a two way mirror are the sole means necessary to owning a politician. I won't obsess over sanford, but I won't hide my disgust as the media marches him by.

I never caught the talking points for the libs on this one. I try to imagine if the msm pursued the story with 1/10th of the zeal that they will chase sanford...

I really wish I could understand these jerks. I wonder how old this woman was, and I wonder how the govenor of a state could be this absolutely stupid.
Wow, STM, I was married in October, 1981, so I'm celebrating 28 years myself on that date. And I meant what I said, too. Congrats on the success of your marriage as well.

In Arkansas when Bill Clinton was Governor the women were so fast they had to put a Governor on them.
Posted by: joeb | Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at 05:03 PM
Damn that Obama--all this talk about "stimulus this & stimulus that," something like this was sure to happen. Poor Sanford--it was all the Democrats, especially Obama's, fault. :)).

I think he was actually in Argentina doing work for the Piece Corp.
Posted by: Dan Riehl | Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at 05:09 PM
Sorry, Mark, I can't agree with that analysis.
Sex and power go together, always have, always will.
Unless we're talking serious depravity or epic hypocrisy [like condemning homosexuality while having sex with a boy prostitute while doing drugs], then I'm for the private being private, especially the private sex life.
Eisenhower had a mistress, yes? Do you really think he was blackmailable?

My hypothesis, considering the current economic collapse on the horizon for the US, is that Gov. Sanford took time to understand and research the economic collapse of Argentina which happened much like the current events in the US.
"Argentina quickly lost the confidence of investors and the flight of money away from the country increased."

Damn Bob we finally can agree on something!
What next will pigs fly?
"Wow, STM, I was married in October, 1981, so I'm celebrating 28 years myself on that date. And I meant what I said, too. Congrats on the success of your marriage as well."
Thanks Brother Knight, we obviously got it right!
Yea but mine is a redhead, I ought to get credit for at least another 10 years out of that!

i can't deny that sex and politics are like coffee and cream...
it is just that I hope we evolve beyond being monkeys in a zoo.

"didn't care that Spitzer had hookers on speed dial"
Spitzer used his AG position to take out his prostitution-ring competitors; much more than getting his wing-wang whacked off.
I understand he's thinking of getting back into politics, and he can because he has a big D burned into his forehead.

Wow! The muted level of outrage when a Republican cheats on his wife and 4 kids is breathtaking !!! I'll infer from that muted level of outrage that infidelity is only something to go nuts about when Democrats like Bill Clinton or Elliot Spitzer do it.
Newsflash: Turnabout is a bitch !! The only thing worse than a dirty, lying sack of human excrement is a HYPOCRITICAL dirty, lying sack of human excrement. Given their respective previous criticisms of the sexual escapades of Bill Clinton and Senator Larry Craig, Governor Mark Sanford and Senator John Ensign are indeed HYPOCRITICAL, DIRTY, LYING SACKS OF HUMAN EXCREMENT.
Let's get one thing straight. Same sex marriage is not a threat to the sanctity of traditional marriage. However, people like Mark Sanford and John Ensign are indeed a threat to the sanctity of all marriage, traditional and otherwise.

while on the topic, todd...
how's that john edwards thing sit with you?

Just another Samson and Delilah moment in mans long history chasing tail in spite of his best interests. In a way the Spitser episode did do justice to this whole faithful but not thing. Sanford will pay in his own way as Elliot did. But really Todd, People in glass houses and all that.Perfection only applies to gods,Not men.
Posted by: Rich K | Thursday, June 25, 2009 at 12:46 AM
So... "muted level of outrage" is the meme-du-jour, and "Todd" is getting paid to spread it. Apparently each repetition snags him some cash.

Some muting.
http://www.punditandpundette.com/2009/06/sanfords-betrayal-continued.html
You must have us confused with Obama Party members like yourself, Todd, who not only support this behavior, but keep electing people who do it, like Barney Frank, Gavin Newsom, Antonio Villaraigosa.....
In fact, let's hear what you have to say about that, troll. Do you believe that any politician who cheats on his wife or hires prostitutes should immediately resign from office?

"Let's get one thing straight. Same sex marriage is not a threat to the sanctity of traditional marriage. However, people like Mark Sanford and John Ensign are indeed a threat to the sanctity of all marriage, traditional and otherwise."
I fail to see how, Todd, given that this example is perfectly normal and accepted behavior in gay-sex marriage.
"Eric Erbelding and his husband, Michael Peck, both 44, see each other only every other weekend because Mr. Peck works in Pittsburgh. So, Mr. Erbelding said, “Our rule is you can play around because, you know, you have to be practical.”
Mr. Erbelding, a decorative painter in Boston, said: “I think men view sex very differently than women. Men are pigs, they know that each other are pigs, so they can operate accordingly. It doesn’t mean anything.”"
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/15/us/15marriage.html?_r=4&adxnnl=1&oref=slogin&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss&pagewanted=print&adxnnlx=1213697634-j9+pUQLCWeicQLQWdwnhbQ&oref=login&oref=slogin&oref=login
Or, if you'd like to see what gay-sex marriage supporters are saying about monogamy, go here, where gay-sex marriage supporter Dan Savage says that monogamy is "unnatural" and that only "fools" would build marriages with monogamy as its foundation.
http://gaybookreviews.info/review/3345/submit_review.html
Now why don't you explain, Todd, why gay-sex marriage supporters like yourself are attacking Ensign and Sanford for having sex outside their marriage when you yourself are proclaiming that doing so is perfectly normal and that, in fact, monogamy is "unnatural" and "foolish".
