What was Obama's tax plan? An alleged cut for 95% of America. And from that, Colin Powell concludes Americans actually want to pay more taxes. Then name one government service with which people are truly satisfied. The fundamental lack of logic in Powell's assertion is troubling given the positions he's held over the years.
"The Republican Party is in deep trouble," Powell told corporate security executives at a conference in Washington sponsored by Fortify Software Inc. The party must realize that the country has changed, he said. "Americans do want to pay taxes for services," he said. "Americans are looking for more government in their life, not less."

Perhaps we should make taxes optional.
I mean, if so many Americans want to pay taxes then why waste money on enforcement; we can just have people send in their hard earned cash.

Hmmmmm....Fortify Software is a government contractor. Powell commands up to $50,000 for a 1 hour speech!
I wonder if the General is also using his contacts to steer some business to his client? Like Murtha!
I find it funny how the media is buzzing about the fall of the republican party. Maybe its easier than reporting the truth in that King Barry and the dems dont have a plan for the econonomy or the war!

"Americans are looking for more government in their lives, not less".
This is only true if America, as some are arguing, has moved significantly left and wants to create a European style country where the govt takes care of you from cradle to grave and you can sit back and do nothing. I find it hard to believe that this is true and believe (hope) that O and his crew are overreaching and that their will be a backlash in 2010 and 2012.
As for Powell - he appears to be another RINO mesmerized by the O's teleprompter skills and never bothered to look at the policies O is pursuing.

Powell was never a Republican, nor a conservative. Most of us knew that. He was and is a poser who walks like a Democrat, talks like a Democrat, and acts like a Democrat. Don't let him fool you, Republicans.

"The Republican Party is in deep trouble,"
Yeah Colin, what was your first clue? How much did it cost?

Powell represents what it means to be a "moderate". I hate the corrupt republican party under Bush but the past is the past and now we have Obama who is totally corrupt.

Moderate republicans dont support left wing socialist presidents

These Beltway elites must live in some kind of bubble that fends off common sense from the common man.
At one time, I would have gladly voted for Powell for President.

Well, Powell is consistent if nothing else. He hasn't known what he was talking about in the past and he still doesn't. Truth be known, he is not very knowledgeable overall. He was also a lousy general.

I read this yesterday or the day before. Another blogger insisting that we all WANT more government! Insanity.

What a disgrace! As long as the Beltway republican elite treat him as an expert on tax policies, GOP is doomed.
The great man who believed that moderates make up the majority of voters! The great man who rejected the most moderate McCain in 2008!
Now, he tells us that most people want higher taxes. After all this, there are still sane people who conclude that Powell is so much more smart than Palin!!

I wonder if he will go before the UN and tell the assembly that he has direct evidence that people in the US want to pay more taxes, based on CIA intel.

Another friggin RINO speaks and the MSM can't wait to announce to the masses that Xerxes is indeed the annointed one!!
2010 and 2012 can't come soon enough to show these trolls that their "one world" vision is doomed to fail, along with Xerxes presidency!
Happy Cinco de Quatro Bro!!

"more smart"

Powell needs to shut up whiel he's ahead. He is getting very senile. He should take an extended vacation to a secluded island someplace.
Maybe an alligator with get him there.
By by Powell. You are all washed up.

Powel needs a day care center to go too, he is out of his mind, in an old-age sort of way.

"Americans are looking for more government in their lives, not less".
He must be talking about those AMERICAN'S that are so stupid that they can't even read or write, are high school drop outs, are on welfare already, are young and have many babies and get Wick or they are so screwed up on Drugs that they do not want to get a job and work, or they are just plain sorry as hell and want the government to take care of them while we the normal people pay for their sorry A**.
Thats about all I can think of. Anyone else want to elaborate ?
I want to know where he got his information. Did he go to slumtown or something ?

Powell, unfortunately, is correct. We are rapidly becoming a population that has abandoned are founding ideals.

In a strange way, I think the Bushes and Powells were the worst thing that ever occurred to Conservatives - and Obama and his comrades in Congress will turn out to be the best thing which ever happened for Conservatives.

What does Colin Powell know, anyway. He's the "Republican" that endorsed Obama, then re-assured us all that Barack was "qualified to be Commander-in-Chief" the week before the Russians caught Obama completely asleep-at-the-wheel and nabbed the Krgyzstani air-base that we use to fly-in most of our supplies to Afghanistan.
I don't trust Powell an inch, he apparently feels guilty about promoting the Iraq war (but shouldn't) and is trying to make amends. He will be considered even more irrelevant (if that's possible) when Obamamania collapses in a poof of dust.
And Powell's motivations are plenty suspect, IMO- a guy from Bush's own cabinet promotes Obama... so why has he never endorsed any liberal, inexperienced white candidates before?
Team Obama, the DNC, and their MSM sycophants have been employing despicable Alinsky-esque divide-and-conquer and character assassination techniques for months now… manufacturing synthetic “fights” like Limbaugh vs. Steele, plus ceaseless ridicule of Jindal, Palin, even shameful distortion of the legacy of Ronald Reagan. Clearly, the strategy is to eliminate GOP rallying points and philosophical framework for 2010/12 and create the image of a party in disarray.
And it’s not difficult to see why the Democrats might prefer to banter playfully about made-up GOP “scandals” and irrelevancies like Meghan McCain’s latest drivel than debate Obama’s ongoing destruction of the country.
When their pork-n-welfare spending orgy fails to create any real economic gains -but stokes vicious inflation and crashes the dollar instead- the Democrats face a bloodbath in 2010.

Bush was never a conservative.
Powell was certainly never a conservative, and in the end, may have voted in a manner that was less than colour-blind (given the rather long list of inadequacies of both 2008 mainstream candidates).
The last great conservative we had for President was Calvin Coolidge. Small "c" conservative, small government conservative, pro-personal liberty conservative, and non-interventionist / non-internationalist conservative.
Reagan was passable, if only to successfully contain some of the madness of the post LBJ-liberal congress, but even he was no great conservative.

Patrick McHenry, a Republican deputy whip in the House of Representatives, said this recently:
"Marginal tax rates are the lowest they've been in generations, and all we can talk about is tax cuts. The people's desires have changed, but we're still stuck in our old issue set."
So is Powell really so far out of line to suggest that paying taxes is not the serious problem that many conservatives make it out to be? If Republicans could put forth more serious and reasonable alternatives to dealing with the current economic crisis other than more tax cuts, maybe they could actually participate in finding solutions to our current problems.
