Update: Not that it's related or anything.
Last month, a source familiar with the FBI investigation told FOX News that "several" of the men had returned to the United States, while others “are still there [in Somalia]." Sunday was the first time any of these men have spoken publicly.
Rusty ponders the case of Yavuz Berke. I have no idea beyond news reports. But it is worth noting that whatever the motivations for the flight, someone now has some idea of the protocols NORAD uses in the event of such an occurrence. I'm reminded of previous news reports of al Qaeda's alleged interest in crop dusting planes.
That might sound ridiculous until you remember they were capable of pulling off what they did on 9/11. I wonder how long such a plane would be permitted to meander over the eastern seaboard before it was taken out. Something tells me a flight path down through the Niagara Falls region may have proved to be a bit more perilous.
But unless I'm missing something here, I don't see any evidence that this was anything other than what the authorities are claiming: an attempt by a loser to kill himself in a spectacular fashion.
If I'm missing some aspect of the report here, let me know either in an email or in the comments.

Just looking at the facts...
* His recent name change from Adam Leon to Yavuz Berke (a non-Muslim name to a Turkish-Muslim name)
* Born in Turkey (a Muslim nation who's president claims there is no "moderate Islam."
* Using a small plane in a manner reminicent of concern after 9-11, invoking a cross-country chase by US fighters.
Imagine the outcry of the Islamophobe complainers if the plane were shot down - a poor, mentally challenged young Turk shot down by heartless Americans during the Presidents' visit to Turkey. Wouldn't that have been a success for the Islamists.
Being no conspiracy theorists, but willing to connect dots, this most certainly was a pre-arranged attempt, at minimum, to weaken our resolve by discrediting our nation, and at worst, to test our defenses, IMHO. It was a win/win for Islamists, whatever the outcome. And 95% of Americans have no reason to suspect anything.

In a connecting the dots type theory, remember the Egyptian pilot crashing his DC 10 into the Atlantic and the last transmission was "Allah akbar"? Then several months later everyone discovered how deadly big passenger planes could be? Now we have a simple idiot fumble bumbling into USA air space and nothing happens! Except of course the world knows the USA does respond with escort service but is now more preoccupied with being a good world buddy than protecting ourselves!

The Wisc Air Nat'l Guard airfield is near my house and I watched one of the jets scramble yesterday. I see jets all the time coming and going there but this was different. Fast, rising, steep angle...like a hallucination. I almost went off the road watching it climb up into a cloud with the evening sun on it. Beautiful. Made me smile.
Later I found out why it was in such a hurry. I'm more worried about a FedEx plane dropping a package on our house than I am of rogue Cessnas from Thunder Bay though.
Kind of anti-climactic to end up crawling along with a little putt putt Cessna all the way to Missouri. But they apparently had already determined who the guy was, that he was suicidal, details about his girlfriend, his car, and he seemed to be veering away from urban areas...clearly he wanted to get shot down. Police call this "death by cop" and unfortunately some people find this idea appealing. I'm sure he's getting a pretty thorough interrogation -- a legal one hopefully.

If he would have hit bad weather and crashed into a hospital, a school or a home, that puts a different face on it.

We have nothing to fear from the Canadians.....except maybe using anything they build.

D Owen, YOU ARE AN IDIOT.
TSA has a special advisory on Small Aircraft terrorism...... I'm a GA pilot in the Midwest. AOPA (Aircraft Owners and Pilots Assoc) say some of their members in the South have had several strange contacts of islamic types around airports. Especially the ones that have near high-value targets like the Nuke Plant in Texas and the stuff in Savannah area...
There are at least 3 Novels from mid-1980's that used small airplanes to carry bombs or make suicide attacks on commercial aircraft over cities. Very good one was Final Jihad by Martin Keating (former FBI agent) He did some research that was ignored by Clinton on OKC bombing and connection to Islam helping to do it. Ya know, John Doe #3 (Asian-Native American) and John Doe #4 & #5 (Middle-eastern guys in blue coveralls or blue jogging suits).
If you remember, very 1st guy in OKC bombing that was grabbed as a suspect was an Islamic traveling from Dallas to middle-East through London. He was stopped by Heathrow Airport Security for setting off "bomb detectors" and had wire in his briefcase. He was tied to CAIR and Holyland Foundation and was an Civil/Structural Engineer in Dallas. He was let go after only a few hours of detention, and Scotland Yard said they couldn't believe he was let go by Janet Reno's FBI envoy who didn't even do much of an interview of the man.

Remember Goose Creek? Dan called that one. I believe there is some kind of terrorism link with this guy as well. Plus the nice canadian has that shit eating grin every known terrorist has displayed.
Treated for depression the same day he decides to fly into the US? Suicide note the same day. Left flight training school then was admitted again? Something is very wrong here.
