Specter: The New Six Million Dollar Man

Clicked into a story on Toomey announcing his run against Specter based upon taxes and spending and this bit near the bottom caught my eye. Specter didn't even have a challenger until recently but he's sitting on a war chest of 6 million dollars. Too bad so few Americans have that kind of money just sitting in the bank. You don't need to know much else to conclude that politics is broken today. They are freezing out accomplished citizens who might want to enter politics by accumulating that kind of cash.

For the past several weeks, the two men have been trading barbs, even though Toomey was not yet a candidate. Specter, who had about $6 million in his campaign accounts as of the beginning of the year, launched TV ads that tried to link Toomey to the current crisis in the financial system because of his past as a derivatives trader on Wall Street and his aggressive advocacy of de-regulation.

At the end of every election cycle, all politicians should be forced to return unused donations to pay down the national debt.

The politicians cause the debt, they certainly should contribute to paying it off.
