I'm no fan of Corzine but I think the quote in the second item below makes an important point. I'd also liken it to the Tea Party movement's recent rejection of Michael Steele. Heck, maybe even throw in Chris Dodd and his latest cash from lobbyists issue related to a commuter rail initiative.
We know from the past that train service will never pay its way. We will have to keep pumping money into it. To the people pushing the toll, how much are the lobbyists paying you? Sen. Christopher Dodd got $250,000 for selling out the people — what is your cut?
It's not a good time to be a high profile pol, in office, or thinking of running for re-election. Remember all the Republicans that bailed out before 2008? For once, the Repubs may have actually been ahead of the curve.
Gov. Jon Corzine continues to struggle with the budget and New Jersey voters even as he officially filed for re-election. According to the most recent poll by Fairleigh Dickinson University’s PublicMind, 49% of voters disapprove of the job Corzine is doing while 40% approve. "Sometimes timing is everything," said Peter Woolley, a political scientist and director of the poll. "He’s the only incumbent governor in the country up for election this year as the financial crisis hits."
Among Democrats, six of ten approve of the job he is doing (61%), but independents disapprove by more than two to one (58 to 25) and Republicans disapprove by almost five to one (77-16). Just 33% say they have a favorable opinion of Corzine, while 56% have an unfavorable opinion, a shift from measurements taken a month ago that showed 38% favorable and 48% unfavorable.

As per Mark Steyn: politicians in DC rule in the Emirate of Incumbistan.
We are stuck in the poor vassal state of Electistan, which they deign to visit for our largesse they extract via taxes and kick-backs.

The San Antonio Tea Party has instituted a firm rule for speakers - no professional politicians. We haven't even invited any, officially.
But they are more than welcome to come to our Tea Party - Alamo Plaza, beginning at 6:00 - and listen to us. For a change

union membership, as a % of state's population.
NJ is 18.3%, or 703k. (7th on the list)
2005 special gov election came down to 1.6 million voters.
UNLESS the gop can garner(blunt) union support, NJ isn't going anywhere.
Christie Todd Whitman absolutely destroyed the gop in NJ, and they won't recover anytime soon.
