Obama says we need an "exit strategy" for the war in Afghanistan even as we go forward fighting it. Given that mapping out one's retreat during a battle is simply telling the opposition what they need to do, or how long they have to wait, to beat you, this will not end well.
Wars are perpetual until you've won, or until you surrender. Any idea that there's a third option is just talk. Given that the Left is already criticizing his tactics, don't look for any alleged resolve on Obama's part to last. Check that. I don't know that he ever has shown resolve when it comes to fighting a war.
He made clear his new approach would call for a greater emphasis on economic development in Afghanistan, diplomacy with neighboring Pakistan and better coordination with international partners than under his predecessor George W. Bush. "What we can't do is think that just a military approach in Afghanistan is going to be able to solve our problems," Obama said. "So what we're looking for is a comprehensive strategy. And there's got to be an exit strategy ... There's got to be a sense that this is not perpetual drift."
I wish he'd start thinking about an exit strategy from the White House.

Liberal Democrats rarely if ever make brilliant military strategists, and their political priorities are seldom astute or constructive. While Bush's approach may have been blurry, I think what is being suggested by Obama as a solution will result in a total obfuscation...a lot of pleasant, feel-good idealism divorced from reality.

1. He designates Joe ("only 5% of the Taliban are terrorists" )Biden to negotiate "peace " with the Taliban.
2. The Taliban stands down as America leaves.
3. The Taliban war on Afghanistan resumes.
