What I don't see mentioned in the story is that this guy is noted for calling his congregation to pray for NYC in the weeks prior to 9/11. So, people that believe in his ability to prophesy will likely pray on behalf of those whom Wilkerson says will be affected by the calamity. Perhaps they'll store up provisions so that they'll be prepared should the prophesy come to pass. I don't see what the harm in that is, even if I find his ability to prophesy questionable (http://www.geocities.com/asterisktom/wilkerson.html).

Prophets warning of doom are nothing new, and they're certainly not going anywhere. Not really sure what you're getting at with your comment about progress. Did you think we were done with this, or something?

crackpots aside-

this admin is holding it together with chewing gum and duct tape.

a major disaster, earthquake, hurricane, mexican drug war bleed over, etc...
and this whole thing falls apart. Actually, it would just make it fall apart that much faster, we are well on our way without any 'help'.

what you're getting at

just an observation - the more things change, etc. that's all, really.

not much different than Dick Cheney or Newt saying a terrorist event is all but inevitable. This ain't prophesy, it's common sense. The media picking it up is just hyping the "religious nutcase signboard wacko" element of it.
