To be more precise, a world without private, law abiding citizens owning guns. Just two of several countries plus the EU as a whole and the US listed in this article - all moving toward more gun control.
Swiss citizens are demanding a referendum aimed at confining army weapons to military compounds and banning private purchases of pump-action rifles and automatic weapons — following a spate of suicides and homicides.
The Portuguese Parliament is currently discussing a government proposal to tighten gun laws, including denying bail to anyone suspected of a gun crime.
And as Glenn notes, any US rationale in this regard may have an International flavor, as well. Democrats are beating this drum often enough it suggests they are sending a message.
"The drugs are coming north, we're sending funds and guns south," he said. "As a consequence, these cartels have gained extraordinary power. Our expectation is to have a comprehensive policy in place in the next few months."

I foresee an executive order or a signing statement to a comprehensive gun ban that will somehow make the 2nd amendment moot, and somehow circumvent the language of the Heller v. DC decision (which of course had to do with municipal gun bans)...
Brave new world, indeed.

It's hard to say, I don't think that Obama will institute a 'comprehensive gun ban' because that would create too much uproar, he will try to do it piecemeal, possibly on a region by region basis so that it "seems" like he's not disarming the population even though he is.
You know the West is done for when the Swiss have lost their backbone.

Agree with Anon. The Obama anti-gun effort will be slow, stealth, couched in equal parts alarmist and oblique language. But don't for a second doubt the determination. One slice of Obama's CV that was missed even by most conservatives was his stint with the Joyce Foundation, whose mission was the legal sabatoge of the 2nd Amendment.

Actually, Anon... I think your notion is much better than mine. Gradualism and creeping scope have always been a favoured tool of those who would subvert our liberties.

I just do not see a gun ban happening. I agree with Anon. If it was even tried in a discreet way there would be so much uproar in this country it would not be funny. Believe me people are watching this closely.
Could you imagine the government coming to peoples houses taking their guns away. YEAH RIGHT. A few of those fellows coming to your house would go down.
