It turns out that going casual in the Oval Office is a long, time-honored tradition that pre-dates the Bush administration: Gerald Ford did it. Jimmy Carter did it. Clinton did it (a lot). See photographic evidence below.
Yeah, I think we kinda figured that out about Clinton, but thanks just the same for pointing it out.


On a related note, several accounts of Obama in shirtsleeves pointed out that it was a departure from the more formal style of George W. Bush, but I take that as another (albeit trifling) example of Bush Derangement Syndrome, because few reporters seem to remember that Ronald Reagan made a point of not taking his coat off in the Oval Office out of respect for that location and his position. GWB was not a sartorial pioneer; he followed Reagan's example in that respect, most of the time.
