Just before noon on Friday, Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) emerged from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s (D-Nev.) office and said the key to announcing any deal will be persuading four Senate Republican negotiators to sign onto the amendment. The Republicans who Democrats are trying to strike an accord with include moderate Sens. Susan Collins (Maine), Olympia Snowe (Maine), George Voinovich (Ohio), and Arlen Specter (Pa.). Collins has served as the lead GOP negotiator.

Fine, but who are the Republicans?

the press has been mum on the moderate dems...
I keep hearing about a gang of 18, but the names of the dems on board with moderation haven't exactly bubbled to th top of the msm.
States Obama lost, that have democrat senators:
Arkansas-lincoln, pryor
Louisiana-landrieu
alaska-begich
Missouri-mccaskill
montana-baucus, tester
north dakota-conrad, dorgan
nebraska-nelson
south dakota-johnson
west virginia-byrd, rockefeller.
clearly not all these senators are constrained by the popular sentiments of the state, BUT there are enough among this group that cannot afford a party line vote that is not consistent with their states sentiments. The whole reason for getting/needing 10 gop senators is to provide enough cover for these dems living in red states enough cover if the 'stimulus' doesn't work.
harry might get all four of the named gop senators, but he is going to lose 3-4 from his won party.
the 4 senators from the gop? they are waffling because of the natures of their states. the press is loathe to tell you how bad it is for the dems in the similar circumstances.

I hear Volnovich dropped out.

he doesn't walk away without knowing which way the wind is blowing...
my guess is his office was being called, the 'secretary' advised that he was trying to work the bill size down, but the callers weren't being swayed.
I'm now looking at states obama won, but historically have gone gop in presidential runs-
jim webb and evan bayh are getting skewered. both are politcally safe, but still don't want the bad will that will be produced to support the wackos in the house.
looks like judd is a dud.

The pacifist is as surely a traitor to his country and to humanity as is the most brutal wrongdoer.
