I've previously disclosed some blog consulting work for the auto industry back before the melt down. That assignment ran its course in January as planned. Rob Port of SayAnythingBlog has invited me to do a quick call in to WZFG at 10:30 Eastern to discuss my views. Stream and podcast available here.
In a nutshell, I think America was played by a populist circus act slapping down some execs with private jets for the masses. But with the Dems in power, if you think Big Business, as opposed to Big Labor is calling the shots, I've got a Pinto to sell you. Obama appointed Ron Bloom to head up any program.
That suggests the UAW isn't going anywhere. More likely with things like Card Check being discussed, they'll eventually look to move the Union into the South which will be a disaster for America on a global scale.
The Big Three will continue to expand overseas where labor is cheap. They already are. And eventually as with most of the Steel industry (who Bloom negotiated for by the way) - they'll keep a token presence and say, thanks for the money, but goodbye!
They're business folks in the end. That move would make sense. But I am just guessing, that is not based on anything I learned through any previous work. Tune in here at 10:30 if you wish.
Update: See what I mean?
With successful passage of the $787 billion stimulus package in their rearview mirror, organized labor is returining to their top political priority: convincing Congress and the President to pass and sign the Employee Free Choice Act, or card check, which would remove significant barriers to unionizing.
