I'm not 100 percent sure I'm buying this one. At JWF via Instapundit.
They have some photos of the airdrop here, but what went down afterward sounds like comedy gold. God, I wish this was on film.
However things went badly wrong for the pirates soon after the drop - they squabbled over how to split the money and then a wave washed off their getaway boat and drowned five of them.
It could be true. But I've spent a fair amount of time in boats on waters both large and small. Looking at the scant few white caps in those photos, just about anything short of a canoe and with a V hull should have been fine. I'm wondering if a force other than nature sent a little message to pirates off the Somali coast.
The U.S. Navy, which has had a warship close to the Sirius monitoring the saga, could not immediately confirm its release. The U.S. Navy said on Thursday it was planning to launch a force to combat piracy in the Gulf of Aden, an offshoot of an earlier mission. Chinese warships also began anti-piracy patrols off Somalia this week.

wow...sure pissed off jharp...mission accomplished.
Thanks for proving my point so eloquently, harp. You refuse to consider reading the book, claim the author of the article and the book are liars with no support to your assertion..all in a fit of rage.
You are the poster boy for useless lefty hysterics.
Thank God you have Mr. Soros to tell you which journalists are credible and which are not.

"claim the author of the article and the book are liars with no support to your assertion."
From Thomas Sowell in the article you linked.
"In various states, these mandated coverages include alcoholism, acupuncture, breast reduction and treatment for baldness"
This is a lie. Several states mandate coverage for prosthetic hairpieces for cancer patients. That's all there is to it.
Is that enough evidence for you low life lying piece of scum.

And, since we're back on the single-payer kick, here's what Obama and his shills like jharp aren't showing you.
"Sick with ovarian cancer, Sylvia de Vires, an Ontario woman afflicted with a 13-inch, fluid-filled tumor weighing 40 pounds, was unable to get timely care in Canada. She crossed the American border to Pontiac, Mich., where a surgeon removed the tumor, estimating she could not have lived longer than a few weeks more.
The Canadian government pays for U.S. medical care in some circumstances, but it declined to do so in de Vires' case for a bureaucratically perfect, but inhumane, reason: She hadn't properly filled out a form. At death's door, de Vires should have done her paperwork better.
De Vires is far from unusual in seeking medical treatment in the U.S. Even Canadian government officials send patients across the border, increasingly looking to American medicine to deal with their overload of patients and chronic shortage of care.
Since the spring of 2006, Ontario's government has sent at least 164 patients to New York and Michigan for neurosurgery emergencies — defined by the Globe and Mail newspaper as "broken necks, burst aneurysms and other types of bleeding in or around the brain." Other provinces have followed Ontario's example."
http://www.ibdeditorials.com/IBDArticles.aspx?id=299282509335931
Or:
"The study shows that health care in Canada appears to cost less because relative to the United States, Canadian public health insurance does not cover many advanced medical treatments and technologies, common medical resources are in short supply, and access to health care is often severely delayed.
“On average, Americans spend more of their incomes on health care but they get better access to superior medical resources,” Skinner said.
“If Canadians had access to the same quality and quantity of health-care resources that American patients enjoy, the Canadian health-insurance monopoly would cost a lot more than it currently does.”"

ET - chapter six of Pipes book says the following
Health Insurance, there were 1,901 such mandates, which works
out to an average of 38 mandates per state.24
Benefit mandates introduced since 2000 include hearing aids, hormone
replacement therapy, and reimbursement for clinical trial
participation.25
Many mandates—like massage therapy, breast
reduction, and hair prosthesis—are hardly critical components of
a good health insurance policy.
They exist because special-interest
groups—say, chiropractors—have lobbied state lawmakers to
require all insurance policies to cover their particular service.
The result is that costs are driven up for everybody. Here is a brief
list of just some of the excessive state mandates out there today:
A Sampling of Excessive State Mandates
Acupuncture
Alcoholism treatment
Athletic trainer
Breast reduction
Chiropractor visits
Contraceptives
Dieticians
Drug abuse treatment
Hair prosthesis
Home health care
Hormone replacement therapy
In-vitro fertilization
Marriage therapy
Massage therapy
Morbid obesity treatment
Nature treatments
Pastoral counseling
Port-wine stain elimination
Professional counseling
Smoking cessation
Speech therapy
Varicose vein removal

The hypocrisy is particularly hilarious when you see the people who jharp supports and endorses.

Thomas Sowell is magnificent.
Posted by: Lala | Monday, January 12, 2009 at 01:00 AM
from Wiki -
Sowell was born in North Carolina, where, he recounted in his autobiography, A Personal Odyssey, his encounters with Caucasians were so limited he didn't believe that "yellow" was a hair color. He moved to Harlem, New York City with his mother's sister (whom he believed was his mother); his father had died before he was born. Sowell went to Stuyvesant High School, but dropped out at 17 because of financial difficulties and a deteriorating home environment.[1] He worked at various jobs to support himself, including in a machine shop and as a delivery man for Western Union. He applied to enter the Civil Service and was eventually accepted, moving to Washington DC. He was drafted in 1951, during the Korean War, and assigned to the US Marine Corps. Due to prior experience in photography, he worked in a photography unit.
After his discharge, Sowell passed the GED examination and enrolled at Howard University. He transfered to Harvard University, where he graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics. He received a Master of Arts in Economics from Columbia University, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Economics from the University of Chicago. Sowell initially chose Columbia University because he wanted to study under George Stigler. After arriving at Columbia and learning that Stigler had moved to Chicago, he followed him there.[2]
Sowell has taught Economics at Howard University, Cornell University, Brandeis University, and UCLA. Since 1980 he has been a Senior Fellow of the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, where he holds a fellowship named after Rose and Milton Friedman.[3]

Harpo, you just can't avoid stepping in your own shit, can you?
Franken will be an ineffective, one-term senator, given that he is despised on bith sides of the aisle and by his Minnesota constituents.
"Polling results this week confirmed Franken's precarious position: more Minnesotans have a negative impression of him than a positive one, by a 45 percent to 37 percent margin. Those would be dismal numbers under any circumstances, but for a newly-elected senator they would be particularly alarming."

If you don't like it why don't you do something to change it. I have no problem with any of these mandates. Cancer patients gettin prosthetic hair seems OK to me. Brest reduction too. Are you aware of the problems associated with too large of breasts. And massage therapy? Why not? It works.
"Just one example of how beaurocratic corruption will creep into government run healthcare."
Wait a minute. Will creep in? Good grief you moron, they already have crept in. Albeit still in our old antiquated most expensive health care system in the world.
Though I will give you credit for at least abandoning the lie of Thomas Sowell that there are mandates to treat baldness.

Obama appointing socialists to key positions -
Obama climate czar has socialist ties
Group sees 'global governance' as solution
Stephen Dinan (Contact)
Originally published 05:45 a.m., January 12, 2009, updated 05:45 a.m., January 12, 2009
Until last week, Carol M. Browner, President-elect Barack Obama's pick as global warming czar, was listed as one of 14 leaders of a socialist group's Commission for a Sustainable World Society, which calls for "global governance" and says rich countries must shrink their economies to address climate change.
By Thursday, Mrs. Browner's name and biography had been removed from Socialist International's Web page, though a photo of her speaking June 30 to the group's congress in Greece was still available.

Oh my, what's this all about?
"Even worse for the Left, Obama advisers are now signaling, says the New York Times, "that they may put off renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement, overhauling immigration laws, restricting carbon emissions, raising taxes on the wealthy and allowing gay men and lesbians to serve openly in the military." You know, like, pretty much the very heart and soul of the liberal policy agenda. Even healthcare reform might only be getting what aides call a “down payment” as a "sign of dedication to the broader goals." Let the wretching begin, Daily Kossacks. (Fun Fact: Obama gave his big economic speech at George Mason University, a bastion of free-market scholarship.)
http://www.usnews.com/blogs/capital-commerce/2009/1/12/why-obama-is-causing-a-liberal-freakout.html
But it's Obama's $800 billion American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan that will be ground zero in this coming liberal internecine battle. "Way too much Reagan, not nearly enough FDR," griped some key liberals about a plan that would, in addition to the tax cuts, still provide a whopping half-trillion dollars over two years in government spending for infrastructure, healthcare, education, clean energy, grants to states, and aid to lower-income and unemployed folks.

Hey jharp, why don't you do us all a favor? You claim you do "importing"; are you aware of the carbon emissions that cargo ships and airplanes flying across the ocean produce? Shrink your business and stop importing, and you'll save the environment, just like Obama wants you to do. After all, you couldn't be so selfish and hypocritical as to put your own welfare ahead of others and refuse to shrink your own business, especially when you and your Obama puppet are demanding it.
But then again, as demonstrated above, Democrats who want to raise taxes refuse to pay their own, so we should expect puppets like jharp who demand that the economy be shrunk refuse to shrink their own businesses.

More D scandals coming to light, making money off poor people with sub-standard housing
AN ORGANIZED COMMUNITY
One reason the Obama transition team pushed New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson overboard was concern that other close associates of Obama might be drawn into the burgeoning "pay for play" scandal that is now enveloping not only Richardson, but also the administration of Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, as well as other prominent Democrats.
"The biggest concern is [Valerie] Jarrett and anyone associated with the public housing industry in Chicago," says an Obama transition team adviser. "Some of Obama's earliest and most influential fundraisers came from the low-income housing industry."
In fact, according to federal law enforcement sources, the company at the center of the "pay for play" scandal, CDR Financial, was about to announce the opening of a new office in Illinois. "They were expecting to make some money there, just how and how much isn't clear yet, but it's something that is being looked at."

Hey, STM, I'm thinking we should give sink or swim lessons to many, many more of those savages in Somalia who have now decided to pirate vessels on the high seas. I can't believe it would be difficult to sink the ships these guys ride in. It seems to me a submarine or two would do the job nicely.
Otherwise, a disaster is soon to happen, whether it be the hijacking of an oil tanker that causes a massive spill or the taking of a cruise ship that results in massive loss of life. The French finally intervened and destroyed the Barbary Pirates after a princess was kidnapped. Right?

"Dan, please ban the troll."
Ban me if you must.
But I will not stand by idly when ET and Lala post completely false and misleading information about our health care system.
Both claim that one of the reasons for our most expensive health care system in the world is due to state laws that mandate providers must cover treatments for baldness.
When the truth is the mandates are to provide prosthetic hair for cancer patients.
To me that is the worst of our citizenry. They want to deny someone fighting for their life to look normal in their last days. That is despicable, revolting, and nauseates me.
Posted by: jharp | Monday, January 12, 2009 at 04:29 PM
Templar,
"The US Navy announced this week that it will head a new anti-piracy task force after more than 100 ships were attacked last year.
Other countries, including Russia and India, have sent naval ships to patrol waters around the Horn of Africa as acts of piracy increasingly threaten the safe passage of maritime cargo through the Gulf Aden towards the Suez Canal.
Somali pirates are holding 17 ships and more than 250 crew members hostage, and have carried out more than 100 attacks in the last year.

Lala, methinks the nest of the savages will need to be destroyed before it will all end, but killing as many as possible on the high seas would thin the ranks and slow the pace of these Islamist pirates. It looks like they are getting aid from Yemen, too.
Posted by: templar knight | Monday, January 12, 2009 at 06:04 PM
A funny thing I read about the pirates is that they are really environmentalists stopping ships from dumping, etc. Another is that it's the only way for these poor Somalis to make any money, sort of what we used to hear about the drug dealers in the ghetto.
Posted by: Lala | Monday, January 12, 2009 at 06:12 PM
Either way Brother Knight / Lala there are a few less low live's to rob the next ship passing through the region.
Just a coincidence that the boat capsized I'm sure.
Did you hear about this radio intercept?
"Hey Akmed what is that in the water?"
"It looks like a sweet little Dolphin, they are very pretty aren't they... what is he doing under the boat...What is that strange noise.... Oh my allah what is happening???.. IIIEEEEEEEEE...Help...!!!!!"
(Sorry the intercept is just something I cooked up!)

"Both claim that one of the reasons for our most expensive health care system in the world is due to state laws that mandate providers must cover treatments for baldness."
It is. Mainly because people have no choice to opt out of the coverage.
I just recently purchased car insurance for a new vehicle. During the process, I could choose at what level to set my deductible, whether to purchase comprehensive and collision coverage, to add roadside assistance, and to get reimbursement for a rental car, all of which significantly influenced my bill up and down.
Oddly enough, the single most expensive component of the entire process was the part the government mandates -- liability insurance. And I have no choice in that; I MUST carry it, and I must carry it at a certain level. You would think that would lower the price, but it doesn't; instead it makes it more expensive.
Meanwhile, jharp, what nauseates us is how leftists like you refuse to tell the whole truth to the American people -- that the reason the Canadian system "costs less" is because it severely limits lawsuits, discourages jury trials for malpractice, caps the amount people can recover in damages, does not cover many advanced medical treatments and technologies, leaves common medical resources in short supply, and severely delays access to health care. In fact, the single-payer system was found to be so awful that requiring people to use it exclusively violated both provincial and Canada's human-rights laws.
