I can't imagine any politician arguing against this on principle, can you? It is a transfer of wealth, plain and simple - your children's wealth they won't be able to accumulate but will owe in taxes instead.
WASHINGTON – More than 7 million poor people who are elderly, blind or disabled and receive cash benefits averaging $477 a month could get an extra monthly payment as part of President-elect Barack Obama's $800 billion economic recovery plan.
And then there's this at Instapundit right now. Just as they want to do with bad mortgages, these GM vehicles sold to people who can't afford them will never be repossessed. They'd take more taxpayer money to prop them up before they let that happen on a large scale. You can forget talk of Obama making the country into a socialist state. We're already there thanks to Washington.
In December, GMAC got $5 billion from the government’s $17.9 billion bailout of the domestic auto industry, which Sen. Dodd supported, and immediately lowered its lending standards. No longer would buyers need a credit rating of 700 or higher. Now, people qualify with scores as low as 621, which is 2 points above “poor” and 102 points below America’s median.

Let me get this straight.
It's wrong to give the blind, elderly, and disabled an extra $39.75 a month on top of the $477 they already get. Money that will most likely immediately pumped into our ailing economy.
But blowing through $1 trillion for an unnecessary war that got us nothing is fine.
No wonder your group is now powerless. American's might be stupid but they aren't that stupid.
Posted by: jharp | Tuesday, January 13, 2009 at 12:07 PM
It is socialism to help out the elderly, blind, and poor. It is not socialism to subsidize the GOP's buddies in various industries. For instance, it is not socialism for southern states to subsidize non-union foreign automakers. It is not socialism to subsidize the oil industry. It is not socialism to give away 1 trillion bucks to Wall Street bankers. It is not socialism to start a war for the purpose of subsidizing Halliburton, KBR, etc.
The country has woken up to this bullshit. The GOP has not, and likely will not, given its love affair with Lady Mooseburgers and Joe the Not Plumber / Welfare Queen / Tax Cheat, a man whoes very existence is owed to social assistance.
Posted by: Totally Heterosexual Conservative | Tuesday, January 13, 2009 at 12:39 PM
LOL...of course, jharp wouldn't understand this. He has no trouble stealing the welfare checks that he receives to spend on his daughter and using them to fund his alcohol and golf.
How many of those elderly people do you think would want to impoverish their grandchildren in the future for an extra $40 a month now? Do you think everyone else is as selfish as you are, jharp?
Posted by: North Dallas Thirty | Tuesday, January 13, 2009 at 12:44 PM
Lets keep those poor folks feeding off of the government teet just a little more.
We risk this country having a non-income tax paying majority keeping in power a party that continues to grease their palms with "stimulus checks", "bailouts", "rebates" and other forms of welfare. The way to fund this socialist agenda is to take the hard earned money from the "rich folk". This will suck the life out of our economy with millions dependant on Uncle Sam to provide food, health care and other basic needs.
So now I can live in a $700,000 home and drive a $65,000 Hummer on just $35,000 annual income, is this the greatest country in the world or what?

Twit! (aka jharp) I see you’re up and about, babbling your typical nonsense. You know, I took some time this morning from my normal routine to consider your puppet status. As you will remember, yesterday I gave you some pointers as to how to determine if you were a puppet from Daily Kos [a Geppetto puppet that is]. “Here’s a thought: look around you to see if there are any strings then look down to see if your feet touch the floor. Try stamping your tiny feet. If you can and there are no strings then you’re probably not a puppet.”
On the other hand, you might be what is commonly known as a sock puppet. Although normally worn on a hand it could be also worn on a foot. In fact I think the name comes from it being made out of a sock. Well, how to determine if you are one of those: This time bend down and look between your legs to see if there is a large, fleshy appendage sticking in you…no, not your little thingy. This would be something more or less entering where your cloaca would be. If it is there then most likely you are a sock puppet. Sadly, still a twit though.
On another point, it would be interesting – and perhaps useful – to determine your extent of narcissism. That is to say, when you are at your computer do you have a mirror on the right side or left side in which to admire yourself? Or perhaps you have one on each side…and, and one balanced on top of the computer as well? From a careful study of your actions here and at other blogs I suspect the latter.

Leftists like Totally Heterosexual Conservative won't help out the elderly, blind, and poor themselves, so they need the government to do it for them.
Meanwhile, given that Democrats like Totally Heterosexual Conservative support and endorse proven tax cheats who steal from charities and abuse government funds earmarked for the poor like Al Franken and Charles Rangel, all their smearing of Joe the Plumber does is demonstrate their hypocrisy.
Posted by: North Dallas Thirty | Tuesday, January 13, 2009 at 12:48 PM
I propose a simple law: tax all Democrat Party members who make over $100k per year at 100% of their income, and then give it to other Democrat voters in the form of free mortgage payments, free car payments, and whatever it takes so that these people now make $100k per year as well -- with no stipulation that these other Democrat Party voters work or use the money responsibly.
After all, Democrats are always willing to give away other peoples' money; they shouldn't have any trouble giving away their own.

Again, Totally Heterosexual Conservative and jharp that anyone who has a back tax bill is a "tax cheat", is scum, is a criminal, and is not fit to hold public office.

My drug-addicted nephew is one of those SSI recipients. He used to be able to collect just on the drug addiction but the law was changed in 1996; there had to be an additional disability. No problem, his AIDS that he got from dirty needles qualified him. He has never worked a day in his life. I'm sure he'll be happy to get an additional payment.

"Leftists like Totally Heterosexual Conservative won't help out the elderly, blind, and poor themselves, so they need the government to do it for them."
Morons, like you, rarely know what the hell you're talking about, so you invent strawmen to knock down rather than addressing what was posed to you, i.e. that the definition of socialism changes depending on who is doing the accusing.
"Meanwhile, given that Democrats like Totally Heterosexual Conservative support and endorse proven tax cheats who steal from charities and abuse government funds earmarked for the poor like Al Franken and Charles Rangel, all their smearing of Joe the Plumber does is demonstrate their hypocrisy."
Meanwhile, dipshits like you, continue to give voice to the inane chatter in your heads about what and who I and others "endorse." I suppose by "proven tax cheats who steal from charities" you mean Cindy McCain. I also suppose that your strawmen in the form of Franken and Ragel are trotted out so that you again, can avoid the premise posed you - the one you are too intellectually dishonest and cowardly to address: that when government subsidizes benefactors of the GOP, such is not "socialism." Is this correct or not, numb nuts? Finally the alleged "smearing" of Joe the Lying Sack of Shit is not "smearing" at all. The criticisms of your knuckledragging fascist hero are all factually verifiable.
You can't defend your positions with factually verifiable information. So, you make up positions to "argue" against. Just like Joe the Stain. Lady Mooseburgers. W. Rove. St. Rush the Junkie, et al.

In addition, neither Cindy McCain or Joe the Plumber are politicians or hold elective office. Rangel does, and Franken would like to do so. What about their holding office allows them to cheat on taxes and steal money from charities, yet receive the endorsement and support of liberals like yourself?

Still can't come up with George Bush even so much as lifting one finger after being warned that Osama was determined to attack the U.S using planes?
Let's see, who allegedly warned him.
Former Clinton officials who claimed they had known for "years prior" that Osama was intending to do so.
So why, exactly, jharp, if these Clinton supporters had known for years prior that Osama was intending to attack the US with planes and had done nothing, do you attack Bush for trusting the judgment of the Clintonites that it wasn't necessary to do anything about it?

"He used to be able to collect just on the drug addiction but the law was changed in 1996; there had to be an additional disability."
Step one: get admitted to a state psychiatric hospital. Acting crazy works, but expressing thoughts of suicidal/homicidal ideations work best.
Step two: establish a mental health diagnosis. You can pull it off by getting admitted to a psych hospital. They can't bill the state or fed govt without a reason to submit a bill, so they'll find a dx.
step three: file for disability for your 'illness'. Some state hospitals avoid this step for a while, but all the individial has to do is start back at step one. While in the state hospital, you can 'network' with other pts to find the best doctors who will support disability.
welcome to 30-40% of individuals receiving benefits for mental illness.

I believe the response was "STFU, that's why!"
If you've got an explanation for why government subsidies to oil giants to "encourage drill" are A-Ok, but subsidies to the blind are intolerable socialist tax-payer funded boondoggles, I'd love to hear them.
So far, all I've heard is heckling and name calling.
As it stands, folks who earn exclusively through capital gains still pay just 15% of their gross income in taxes assuming they have no other deductibles or credits. That's a subsidy of 10-28% compared to their salary earning counterparts. This Warren Buffet / Steve Jobs subsidy seems like a really weird way to delegate the tax burden. I mean, you've got companies like Goldman Sachs dropping their tax rate to 1%.

They're certainly not coming under the burden of creeping socialism. So buck up, cash in all your massive profits from your savy investing skills, write down your loses, and play the system like the rest of the conservative big dogs. And quit your bitching.

"If you've got an explanation for why government subsidies to oil giants to "encourage drill" are A-Ok, but subsidies to the blind are intolerable socialist tax-payer funded boondoggles, I'd love to hear them."
Easy.
Encouraging oil companies to drill for oil creates jobs from the exploration, drilling, and refining of said oil, while increasing the available amount of oil for other companies to use in producing products and for everyone to use for transportation. The increased downstream tax revenue from the additional oil (income taxes from peoples' jobs, business taxes, sales taxes, and gas taxes) more than makes up for the initial subsidy; it's called a multiplier effect. That's because oil, being a valuable commodity that can be used for multiple purposes, generates wealth; the value of what can be produced from a barrel of oil is far greater than the cost of that barrel itself.
Welfare checks, in contrast, are pure consumption. They are given to people who will never pay taxes and who do not work.

Welfare checks, in contrast, are pure consumption. They are given to people who will never pay taxes and who do not work. --"
The goal is to encourage "pure consumption" to invigorate the economy. We have an economic downturn because consumption has slowed. Giving money to individuals who will immediately spend all of it is GOOD for the economy, especially if they spend it on local goods and services in cash-strapped areas. If a welfare check goes straight to the local grocery store or pharmacy or auto repair depot or what have you, that's a 100% contribution to GPD. If the store/pharmacy/dealership then spends some fraction of the money itself, you see X% additional output to GDP, and so on until all the money ends up in some bank account.
By contrast, oil companies have billions of dollars in liquidity to tap should they need the cash. If Exxon believes that it is profitable to drill more wells, it doesn't need government stimulus. It turns a profit per barrel of oil so if it thinks it has an interest in drilling more, it will use its liquidity to drill more. Paying a company to do something it is already doing at maximum capacity doesn't actually cause the companies to perform any additional drilling. The numbers haven't changed. It still isn't worth it for them to invest extra income into drilling. You're just paying for their existing drilling with tax dollars rather than profit. The extra money - the money that would be going to hiring more engineers, construction workers, what have you - instead just goes into the company's general profit pool or gets paid out to investors as dividends. Virtually none of the money gets spent.
You are under the delusion that more oil was drilled when the oil companies got their tax cut. On the contrary, more oil was not drilled. We got to see the proof of our investments when the price of oil skyrocketed to $4.50 / gallon just three years after the Bush Energy Plan was put into effect.
And that's not even addressing the fact that domestic drilling only accounts for 3% of domestic supply. So any credits we give to oil companies end up going to drill oil overseas. If even the oil companies do drill for additional oil, you're giving stimulus to THE WRONG COUNTRIES!
So, you're wrong. Try again.

The goal is to encourage "pure consumption" to invigorate the economy. We have an economic downturn because consumption has slowed.
Wrongo. We have an economic downturn because EXCESS consumption took place. People spent money they didn't have on items they didn't need that did not retain their value or generate additional wealth.
The inanity of your response increases with this:
"The extra money - the money that would be going to hiring more engineers, construction workers, what have you - instead just goes into the company's general profit pool or gets paid out to investors as dividends. Virtually none of the money gets spent."
Dividends involve giving checks to people. Paying out profits involves giving checks to people. Why is it that liberals oppose handing out checks to people who work for a living and instead prefer to give it to people who don't?
Again, I propose a law: let leftists like IslamoLlama who want to redistribute wealth start with themselves. Require all Democrat Party members who make more than $50,000 per year to be taxed 100% on the income above $50k, with the money to be handed out in the form of welfare checks to those who don't work to bring them up to $50k per year.
Posted by: North Dallas Thirty | Tuesday, January 13, 2009 at 06:07 PM
Oh, and here's the latest one for the liberal left who supposedly hates tax cheats: turns out Obama's Secretary of the Treasury is one.
http://hotair.com/archives/2009/01/13/uh-oh-obama-treasury-nominee-had-undocumented-housekeeper/
So let's see, the Democrat who is slated to oversee the IRS is a tax cheat who also illegally hired undocumented workers. The Democrat who leads the committee that writes tax law is a tax cheat and demanded "gifts" from businesses in exchange for favors. The Democrat candidate for Senator from Minnesota, endorsed by all the board liberals here, is a tax cheat who stole money from charities and refused to pay for worker's compensation for his employees.
And yet these are the people who are screaming about the need to raise taxes, punish companies who hire undocumented workers, and raise mandates for businesses.

IslamoLama, North Dallas Thirty, your discussion is quite interesting. I can see some logic on both sides but honestly without an actual test I could not say which is right. Is it possible that both of you are right?
Posted by: Philip McDaniel | Tuesday, January 13, 2009 at 07:59 PM
"Is it possible that both of you are right? "
Phil I agree that they both make some sense. But they leave out some factors for instance. The average Joe is going to take his money to WalMart and buy asian junk. After the barely over minimum wage employees are paid and other costs. SOme of what's left goes to investors, some to Sam's big fat bank account and the rest to the Chinese. One t'other hand, banks will buy smaller banks, dividend checks will most likely go to invest for more dividends, or buy single, large ticket items. So I'm thinking a meeting somewhere near the middle seems the best option.

Dumbass, because that'd be profiling and Harpie would go nuts. Just be on the look out.....no, we dont know how long.
Harpie, I was still working for da guvment before and after 9/11 and even at my low level saw some intel traffic....I tell you for 110% certain, they were doing a heap more than clearing brush. Oh and you and yours have no idea, NO IDEA of the threat we faced and are facing.
