he is already set up for monumental failure, in trying to emulate his hero, FDR, via spending, without producing the dramatic social change that accompanied FDR's national makeover and remaining constricted by his party's environmental squemishness.

The FDR new deal was characterized by massive land siezures for the purpose of producing hydroelectric energy and roads that provided access to claiming the existing resources of materials(lumber) and energy(COAL) found in the hinterlands of the US.

Two major successes(?) were the formation of TVA and the construction of the Grand Cooley Dam, which actually produced a massive amount of electricity. One only has to look at the lack of new construction of power plants in CA to realize that the purpose(and environmental sacrifice) that FDR was driven by will not be found in our new congress, let alone our pending pres.

Obama's new deal will be crippled by the very nature of his party, that will refuse to make any environmental sacrifice, no matter the size of the possible gain.

There aren't going to be any new national highways built thru pristine untouched land, there won't be any new sources of power that even come close to what the new deal provided...no coal, no nuclear, no hydroelectric...just road crews painting lines over another president's legacy.

Does anyone believe that FDR wouldn't have started pumping every available ounce of gas/oil out of Alaska had the State already been in his possession?

the repeated invocation of "new deal" by the media without the very understanding of what tasks it actually performed, based soley on the belief that spending a ridiculous amount of money makes it equivalent, is a recipe for disaster.
