Michelle, who also has a statement from Boehner addresses whether or not Bush's move under TARP is even legal.
The fight - and opposing the bailout - is understandable based upon principle. But Congress did punt, even Republicans were willing to support a bailout with more concessions from the UAW. If little else besides punting it back, Bush's plan does speak to such concessions, albeit in too vague a manner.
But did anyone really expect Bush to go out with the collapse of the domestic auto industry his last significant claim to fame? I certainly didn't. In some ways, it's hard to blame him.
With the short-term loan, this issue is heading back to Congress where it belonged in the first place. They punted first. Bush simply returned the punt.
What that means is that the real fight is ahead, not behind us now. We're moving into the Christmas season and after that a new administration. Some battle space preparation isn't bad.
But conservatives would do well to keep their eyes focused just ahead. There are major fights coming up, many with the potential to direct the course of this nation for decades to come.
We need to realize what we're up against, who the real enemies are, and get ready for those fights.
