what I really don’t get is, why bailout the industry with billions of taxpayer dollars, only to saddle them with this? If one didn’t know better, one might think re-distributing taxpayer dollars and regulating industry were goals in and of themselves. Hmm
More via Ace, as well.
The sickly condition of US automakers is well known. In fact it looks like GM will be out of money by the 1st quarter of next year.
One would think the last thing the government should do is impose expensive new mandates on failing manufacturers. Except that's exactly what might happen if President Hope and Change has his way. He's promised to reverse a Bush Executive Order and allow California to regulate carbon dioxide emissions for automobiles.

Excellent example of how the wingnut brain works. Thanks for posting.
So what if a few thousand Californians end up with lung cancer and the asthma suffers gotta gasp for breath.
The important thing is a totally mismanaged auto company on its death bed gets to sell more of their shitty cars.
And by the way Obama isn't sworn in until Jan 20th. GM will be in bankruptcy by the end of February.
Wingnut welfare. Whether it be bailing out Wall Street or allowing dangerous products is still alive in spirit.

Now that Xerxes is ready to RULE us all we can just submit to his will like little sheep!

You asked for him losers now just watch the cluster f**k begin.
It's okay though, if things get too tough he can just vote "present" again!

STM, how's it going? Xerxes is in, so you had better bow to the exalted ruler, or else jharp, the Sheriff of Rottingham, is surely going to get ya'! Lol.

And by the way, jharp, that's very un-American of you to advocate the demise of GM, especially given the fact that thousands of union men and women will be put out of work. Why do you hate hard-working union people so much, jharp? The Riehl World wants to know.....well, not really, but it's a catchy phrase, you have to admit that.

templar,
I don't like to see anyone go out of business or lose their job. However, I'm a free market guy and GM just ain't cuttin the mustard.
Let them go into bankruptcy. We have carefully written bankruptcy laws that can allow them to re emerge and start making cars again. Hopefully they will get their act together.
I might add I clearly remember the GM cars of the 70's. Brand new cars with a list of problems. Thankfully Honda and Toyota came in and gave them some competition and GM actually got better for a while.
And I wonder how much the U.S. health care system, the most expensive in the world, dragged them down.

"..I'm a free market guy..."
And you voted for Obama? Wow...just wow! That's all I can think of right now.
Back to GM, I love their trucks and SUVs as well, as I have a GMC Sierra and my wife has a Chevrolet Tahoe. Both these vehicles have surpassed my expectations, but they are a bit pricey, although their trucks have come way down over the past few months. My youngest son has a new Toyota Tacoma and my oldest son has a new Ford F-150. The Toyota is nice for him, as he is in Washington, D.C., but the Ford suits my other son well.

Nice choice, Willie. I bet all the girls want to ride with you. Lol. My choice was boring: White GMC Sierra Z-71 fleetside, but that red lettering on the Z-71 sure is flashy. Haha!

I'm still in the family mini van and to be honest the thing is very functional. I like it and I'm actually going to miss it. Golf clubs, fishing trips, etc. It just works really well.
I plan on getting a pickup next. Like the Toyota a lot. Both the Tacoma and the Tundra. Reliability can't be beat.
Also like the Ford F150 and cannot believe how cheap they are now. Yet I feel the Toyota are a better value.

From experience, you can't beat a toyota (Da misssus has a 4-runner) to death, ford can eat my shorts and I've been extremely happy with my former chevy and present GMC........Also loved the old family van back in the day and have missed it often.

"Mine has bun warmers..."
LOL. The options on trucks are awesome these days, Willie. I've missed you the past few weeks, my friend. You could always make a man laugh. It's good to have you back.

Al is still on his mission, obcessed with no coal, no gasoline. Obama was brainwashed by this complete foolish idiot and is now in the tank with him.
I will hate to see what becomes of all this crap. What an idiot. He is truly one of the most ignorant obcessed people of all time. I can still see his ugly face screaming on my TV screen "HE LIED TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE" ! That man had so much hate in him that night that daggers and fire were coming out of his eyes.
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/09/opinion/09gore.html?_r=3&hp=&pagewanted=all&oref=slogin&oref=slogin&oref=slogin
He could care less if he puts coal miners out of work, and does away with the heating of all our homes with coal, (AMERICA'S OWN AND LARGEST NATURAL RESOURCE IN THE WORLD) and drives our heating and cooling bills so high we will all suffer from the heat in the summer and freeze in the winter. He could care less if he puts the auto makers out of business unless they make the kind of cars he wants that want be cheaper and the cost of the way we run them will also be out of reach for the average person.
If we slowly make changes along the way, then so be it, but the wacky man wants this to be done "yesterday". What a fool. He is not worried about average Americans, he has it made and wants for nothing. Thats how all these wacko congress democrat people think. It does not bother them because they can afford it anytime. Normal everyday people are the ones that suffer.
Al is a nutcase, always has been and always will be and I don't give a damn how many awards the man has won. Just goes to show you how many blind fools there are out there hanging on his every word just like th other fools out there that have been brainwashed and are hanging on Obama's every word.
He is the little God and Obama is the big God. Maybe it is the other way around. People actually worship these folks. DAMN.

"You could always make a man laugh. It's good to have you back."
Thanks TK. MY theory is to laugh as much as possible, dont sweat the small shit and the big shit wont seem as bad. That's why the dems wont let me come to their parties because I can always find something worth laughing about. There will be loads o' laughs in the next 4 years.....except those poor kids....I wont laugh at the hoodwinked college kids..............Unless they are "Obie gwan put gas in mah cah and pay mah mogage" stupid, then I will LOLOLOOLOLLLL`til I vomick.

I'm afraid there won't be much to laugh about on the political front the next few years, Willie, but life goes on, and laughing and having fun are two of the things that make life worth living. I commend you on your attitude, and hope you are right about everything else but the poor kids. And stick around, will 'ya. I either need someone to watch my back, or correct my excesses. And give me advice on this retirement thing. Lol.

"And stick around, will 'ya. I either need someone to watch my back, or correct my excesses. "
Brother Knight I, for one, have your back my friend! We normal folk gotta stick together!
When the Astroturfers were hijacking Dan's site these past couple of months the chance to interact with all of the other regulars was almost impossible. I found myself sitting on the sideline more and just waiting for the trolls to vanish on their own.
Amazing to see the change since last Tuesday.
As far as supporting American car makers I will never purchase a new foriegn car, period! I have many uncles and cousins back in the Detroit area that made their living working for Ford. For Americans that won't support their own automotive industry I hold nothing against them if they want to ruin the American automotive industry by buying foriegn made cars but this American won't be one of them!
I did have a 1993 Dodge Intrepid that was a real POS but not so with my 2002 F-150. It has never needed anything but tires, oil changes and a battery. It is bought and paid for and with only 40,000 miles it will last me many more years. There are well made American cars if you honestly take the time to look. They have come a long way from the "K" cars of the 80's

Ditto, STM. You are right. I bought a new GMC Sierra in 2000, put 140,000 miles on it, replaced it in 2004 with another just like it, put 110,000 miles on it, and replaced it again with a 2007 GMC Sierra. I only had one problem with one of those vehicles, and that was when a fuel pump went out on the 2000 model. That was it. All of these vehicles have been outstanding. They don't get the best gas mileage, but I need a truck that can pull, so the little trucks were out of the question.
My wife has a 2008 Tahoe, had a 2005 Suburban prior to that, and has loved both of them. We've driven them to Colorado, California, Florida, Washington, DC and many points in between, and have never had a problem with them. Just change the oil and filters, and replace the tires.
And thank you for support. It is nice for reason to return to the interwebs, or at least this little corner of it. Life goes on, my friend, and it's the good people like you who make it worthwhile.
