Michelle Malkin and Amanda Carpenter, among others, are all over John McCain for his failure to strongly defend Sarah Palin.
You want some "straight-talk" on John McCain? Okay, here goes.
In a genuine tragedy McCain was taken prisoner and held captive in Vietnam for years suffering a terrible ordeal. For that the nation owes him much.
But the fact is, he dumped on his ex-wife when he returned - perhaps understandable given the turmoil he had endured. He traded on Reagan to get elected to the Senate and like nearly every Senator he's always been all but a lock to be re-elected. Reagan even dumped him from his inner circle because the guy was such bad news.
And the media only fawned over him because he was anti-Republican and anti-conservative.
He isn't terribly bright, has no over-arching political creed that even remotely qualifies him as a leader. And his temperament disqualifies him for POTUS to boot. If you took away the votes that were more anti-Obama than pro John McCain, he probably received fewer votes for President than any candidate of any party who ever ran.
America has been carrying McCain for years because of the POW chit he constantly keeps cashing-in. If he didnt' exist in the Senate, where they spend half their time telling anyone who will listen how wonderful they all are, it's doubtful McCain could even hold a job.
America knows a loser when she sees one and that's why he lost against a too-liberal black man. He couldn't even manage to display the basic competence someone wants in a President throughout his pathetic campaign that was bad chiefly because he's the worst candidate Republicans have ever put up.
And that is the straight-talk when it comes John McCain.

Wow, look at the imperialist yapping dogs turning on the guy they thought would save us from Das Obmeister just last week..........WTF were they during the primaries??????????

And to think he's the best the GOP had.
The republican party is in serious, serious trouble. Romney, Grandpa Fred, Guiliani, and the other nut jobs would have been trounced even worse.
Maybe you ought to get behind Lieberman? Or do a flip flop on the issues.
Health care, equal rights for all, a women's right to choose, torture, holding citizens without charges or a trial, tax relief for the middle class, ending the occupation of a sovereign country, among others.

And by the way, Willie. America is not center right. It is a myth.

"If you took away the votes that were more anti-Obama than pro John McCain" ...
Most of the people I know who voted the Repub ticket were voting for Sarah Palin, not McC.

jharp- and by the way jharpie, America is center right. It is not a myth.
See how that works? You bloviate, I correct you. and you want to give conservatives advice on candidates? hahahahahahahahahahaha.....
Posted by: Kat | Wednesday, November 12, 2008 at 12:37 PM
kitty, ditto that. Most of the people that I know that voted republican voted for Saracuda and McCain was also on the ticket.
Posted by: kat | Wednesday, November 12, 2008 at 12:39 PM
"WTF were they during the primaries??????????"
Speaking for conservative blogs, we were saying pretty much the same thing. Few if any of us wanted McCain. Actually, there weren't any good choice this year imo.
I think Romney would make a good Prez. But I'm unconvinced he would sell. Too much of a stiff on the stump and in debates.
Posted by: Dan Riehl | Wednesday, November 12, 2008 at 12:40 PM
Dan, I've been saying: the repubs had eight years to groom a candidate and they gave us Johnny Mac. Mission/failure.
It isn't good for any party to be against their candidate, then for their candidate, then against the candidate.

jharp- and by the way jharpie, America is center right. It is not a myth.
Posted by: Kat | Wednesday, November 12, 2008 at 12:37 PM
Let's proceed with the evidence.
The center right John McCain just was trounced by the most liberal Senator in the country, and a black liberal too.
"Most of the people that I know that voted republican voted for Saracuda"
And my republican friends in Indiana voted for Obama because of the utter absurdity of having Palin become VP.
Posted by: jharp | Wednesday, November 12, 2008 at 12:53 PM
Harpie, if you think J Mac is center right you haven't been paying attention. Sort o' like calling GWB conservative and other oxymorons. Still JM wasn't "trounced" by anyone, there wasn't that big a gap in the popular vote. I will say that the choice of Sara couldn't pull me into voting for Jmadc either.
Posted by: WAHOO WILLIE | Wednesday, November 12, 2008 at 12:57 PM
Americans voted for Obama for the sames reasons they voted for George W. Bush. By and large, they're stupid.
The economy is in meltdown and in worse shape than it has been for 20 years at least. Now, while I do think George W. Bush is so far the worst president in history, the Wall Street sub prime debacle is not his fault. But the average voter says "well, Republican president, country in trouble, I know, let's throw out the Republicans and put in a Democrat and hope for the best.
This idea of some kind of liberal sea change in America is false.
I predict that if the GOP can get itself together and field some decent, non crazy candidates who talk about fiscal responsibility and small government more than they talk about dead babies and gay marriage that the Republicans will retake Congress.
Posted by: Anon | Wednesday, November 12, 2008 at 12:59 PM
"Harpie, if you think J Mac is center right you haven't been paying attention."
McCain is clearly right of Obama and Palin is off the charts.
Americans overwhelming picked the leftist.
Posted by: jharp | Wednesday, November 12, 2008 at 01:18 PM
Thanks for the honesty. It couldn't be said much during the election simply because Obama is an even worse choice. We were just willing to cope with another President who would drive us crazy being un-conservative because at least he would be better on defense than Obama.

"In a genuine tragedy McCain was taken prisoner and held captive in Vietnam for years suffering a terrible ordeal."
In a more recent tragedy, but no less genuine, the conservatives got their own Vietnam pow experience. Trapped in a bamboo cage of the limited knowledge and representation by mccain, they were left hanging as the press proceeded to poke them thru the bars of mccain's creation.
did any fiscal conservative believe that mccain even understood that federal revenues are a product of the nation's growth, and that the nation grows faster under lower taxes? mccain, after watching reagan for 8 years, still didn't get it, as recently as 2003.

It's telling that McCain won the primary. Even the republicans wanted a liberal (or perhaps the furthest thing from Bush as they could possibly get). Adding Palin helped keep McCain afloat in traditionally red states. In blue and toss up states, Palin hurt the ticket and kept McCain under water.

"Democrats have won the popular vote in four of the last five presidential elections. They’ve enjoyed congressional gains in five of the last seven elections. Since 1992, the Republican Party has had three unambiguous wins: 1994, 2002, and 2004. In the grand sweep of American history, that’s not such an impressive record."

And what tickles me most is the right wingers can't even win the GOP nomination.
Center right my ass.

I'm still trying to figure out what the conservative "values" are nowadays. The Republicans had some reasonable choices, byt those folks either had ancillary baggage o no name recognition, especially to go up against Hillary. I recall Dan saying, fairly early this year that McCain should not be the candidate and, in fact, he might consider voting for Obama (I think I'm right on that). That was all before Rev. Wright, ACORN and the rest of the cast of loonies for which the Obamedia has barely scratched the surface.

You know Harpo the left would like us all to believe that the minority veiws of Gays and Lesbians, Atheists and associated freaks represent the "mainstream". This couldn't be further from the truth!
Gays and Lesbians are around 2-3 % of the population depending on which stats you like:
http://www.gaydemographics.org/USA/ACS/2004/ACS2004statelist.htm
95% of Americans believe in god.
http://www.unexplainedstuff.com/Religious-Phenomena/Ninety-Five-Percent-of-Americans-Believe-in-God.html
So those aluminum hat wearing, America hating, Daily Koz loving freaks that form the foundation of the left are still in the minority in the "Riehl World" (Sorry Dan, couldn't help the plug there).
As far as McCain goes he was certainly not a conservative candidate but he was what we got! He is still light years ahead of Xerxes in class and ability. The leftist nutjob that we just elected POTUS will make Jimmy Carter look like a conservative!
If he doesn't come out soon and reassure the market that he isn't going to tax investors to the hilt we will see a continued slide in the stock market. The sad part is that when that happens the MSM will still spin the crap out of it and the old BDS will be repeated ad nasium.
Really classy the whole Nancy Reagan seance crap and his "staff" leaking confidential information from the One-On-One meeting between Barry and the Prez. So if only two guys were in the room and one doesn't blab his mouth about what was said that leaves only the god king to leak information to his helpers in the MSM.

Nominated != "best", nominated = nominated and nothing more.

please continue to balbber on about the superiority of the democratic leadership versus the republicans. Reid, Pelosi, Shumer, Dodd, Frank....And now you are fighting for Al Fucking Franken???
If that's the best you can do, we are all doomed. These idiots created the financial mess we are in and we just gave them free reign to screw up any chance of a solution. Talk about ignorant voters...you morons on the left who still think obama will give you a world free of war and poverty. Hilarious. The market is crashing since his election, and gays are rioting in the streets cause a fella lost his right to pick out a designer wedding dress.
Real progress so far.

That a conservative couldn't even win the nod from the GOP?
Sorry forgot that part.

Some people that comment on this that comment need to watch your nasty vulgar mouths. You know who you are.
Need some soap ?

As far as McCain getting the Republican nomination, I recall thinking the "non-liberal" commentators (EIB) kinda forced him down our throats by telling us the "Christian Right" would never accept Romney as he was a Mormon, Huckabee was too "christian-y", Fred was...well, a t.v. star, and McCain was just center enough to pick up the "Independants" we so desperately needed to win this election. Then there was the dems (like my husband) who voted in the Republican primary because no one trusted Obama and were way too leery of Hillary's "cradle to the grave" healthcare (among other scary things). And Guiliani just was too controversial to survive as a serious contender. So we got stuck with a Democrat on the Republican ticket. We only got "excited" about McCain/Palin because of Sarah.

RE: Huckabee was too "christian-y"
If true, then doesn't that imply Palin may never be a contender.

"--- The market is crashing since his election, and gays are rioting in the streets cause a fella lost his right to pick out a designer wedding dress. ---"
Very small, but noteworthy reasons why I dropped half a large on ammunition last week, and will probably budget a like amount each month until Uncle Barry is sworn in.
Got my eyes on a little beaut of a man-stopper weapon in case the loonies come out my way.
And McCain? He was a stinker of a choice, not that the field had any bright stars aside from the Hon. Dr. Ron Paul, whom the media largely ignored.

------------------
I agree with that sentiment. The Republican line of b.s. on social issues is just that...pure b.s. That stuff is states rights issues anyway, and should not be part of national campaigns. The problem also is talking about fiscal responsibility and small government when the GOP has been the poster child for the mirror image of those. Why should anyone believe them when they say that and then they dole out no-bid contracts to Halliburton. How wonderfully fiscally responsible.....NOT.
Posted by: Todd | Thursday, November 13, 2008 at 05:20 PM
"Michelle Malkin and Amanda Carpenter, among others, are all over John McCain for his failure to strongly defend Sarah Palin."
---------
Why did McCain have to defend Sarah Palin? She's a politician. She can defend herself. What happened to personal responsibility in the Republican Party? Or is that something the GOP only pays lip service to, among many things like small government and fiscal responsibility. Malkin and Carpenter should be criticizing McCain for doing virtually no vetting of Palin and picking a running mate with a very thin resume, and for running an incredibly negative campaing offering no positive message of his own. McCain acted like a cranky old man in the campaign. Helluva message.
Posted by: Todd | Thursday, November 13, 2008 at 05:28 PM
I am glad that I can now go back to saying whatever I want about McCain. I'd be more comfortable with him as pres. than Obama, but I really dislike Mac. Your right Dan, he has done more with his past POW status than most people do for great achievements. Are we all still obliged to preface all written and oral disagreements with McCain with the phrase, "He is an honorable American for whom I have the utmost respect, but..." followed by, "he's pretty much a dumbass self promoting good old boy country club Republican who loves the 100 club more than anything else in this world, and is one of the many posters boy for term limits." Gosh McCain sucks.

Been a bit busy, heavier than normal workload ;)
Also loking to get more time on the shooting range, can't let those marksman skills get too rusty, ya know... and trying to talk Mrs. Seeker into at least target shooting (as a typical Japanese, she is a bit leery of firearms in general - but I think in time, she'll come around to it ;)
