The first comment on the article - in bold below is a real kicker:
Debate on Pledge of Allegiance in Vt. town
WOODBURY — No one's sure when daily recitations of the Pledge of Allegiance fell by the wayside at Woodbury Elementary School.
But efforts to restore them have erupted into a bitter dispute in this tiny (pop. 810) Vermont town, with school officials blocking the exercise from classrooms amid concerns that it holds nonparticipating children up to scorn.
Supporters say the classroom is the place for it, and the disagreement has fueled an increasingly acrimonious debate.
"The whole thing is tearing our community apart," said Heather Lanphear, 39, the mother of a first-grade student.
Hey, Mr. Curmudgeon, You forgot to call us gall-danged whipersnappers and tell us to get off your lawn.
FYI: It's not 1957 anymore--it's not even 2007. This drink-the-beer-&-eat-the-can brand of patriotism is done. Yesterday's news. There's a new day dawning, and reactionary bile is no longer relevant. We're not going anywhere and you're not invading anybody. We win. You lose. So take your God & guns & FoxNews soundbites and step to the back of the bus. We just took over the country, and we're calling the shots now.

The words in bold face above could have been written by chris/Boob, Harpo, Llama, 112, or any other troll. So this is there new mantra. Well, what goes around...you know the rest.
Meanwhile it is really Al Gore who is now irrelevant. Here is more evidence of global cooling, which is worse than global warming.
"A surreal scientific blunder last week raised a huge question mark about the temperature records that underpin the worldwide alarm over global warming. On Monday, Nasa's Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS), which is run by Al Gore's chief scientific ally, Dr James Hansen, and is one of four bodies responsible for monitoring global temperatures, announced that last month was the hottest October on record.

Suspected Arsonist Arrested Near Malibu State Park

A 39-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of arson near Malibu Creek State Park, a sheriff's deputy said Sunday.
Suren Sahakyan was booked on suspicion of arson at the sheriff's Lost Hills Station and held in lieu of $75,000 bail, said Deputy Byron Ward of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau.
An area resident saw the man on shoulder of Stokes Canyon Road near Mulholland Highway, starting a fire using paper and leaves about 5:20 p.m. Saturday, Ward said.
The resident stomped out the fire, and Sahakyan fled but was caught by sheriff's deputies a short distance away.

Comrade, I object to your militarisation of language evident in this expression. We expect to hear your self-criticism at the next indoctrination session right after the two-minute hate.

I'm always amazed to see a militant like that "we're calling the shots now" letter writer indulge in provocative bullying while taking for granted that the folks being bullied will not be provoked.

He's probably from California or New England, where these pukes are used to bullying white people. He wouldn't be so brave in some parts of the country, and would keep his mouth shut. Or would be polite in conversation. That suits me just as well.

Born and brought up in Vt. Still beautiful but it's heart is untrue. Always miss it terribly, even when I go back. Heartache. Doesn't seem like home.

Uh-huh. His words are so threatening (after all, he threatened to... um... gimme a minute...) that somebody's just gotta engage in physical violence against their countrymen. Glad to see who the clear-thinking patriots are, as always.

By the way, where was all this chin-stroking during the full-on endzone dance after the 2004 election? Do you really think you can just airbrush the "permanent Republican majority" talk?

ANOTHER UPDATE: Reality: "Daily Kos raised more than $500,000 to assist the campaigns of fifteen candidates. None were elected." Ouch.

TORONTO SUN COLUMNIST THANE BURNETT offers advice for angry Kerry supporters wanting to emigrate to Canada:
As Canadians, you'll have to learn to embrace and use all the products and culture of Americans, while publicly bad-mouthing their way of life.
Not much of a stretch, really, for some people.
***
I don't think the Democrats are ready to accept that, yet. Related thoughts here:
The Democratic Party--my party--has finally become nothing more than the party of cognitive dissonance. That is why, like Zell Miller and a large fraction of usually Democratic middle America, I backed the other side on this one. . . .
Mainstream media bragged of being able to boost the Dems by 15 percent (do you remember Newsweek saying that?). The "blogosphere" has been crowing that MSM failed to do so (for which the blogs also claim responsibility), but I don't agree. I think the MSM actually succeeded in bringing the Dems a 10 to 15 point boost in the election (and maybe more). Before the media spin machine started systematically slamming Bush 18 months ago, he was favored at around 66% in the polls. 66% minus 15% is...well...the 51% margin Bush was re-elected by. Thing is, even the thinly veiled support of most major media outlets wasn't enough to put Kerry in the White House. The Democratic party has completely, utterly, undeniably marginalized itself. The Dems no longer have a national party. All it takes is one look at the electoral map to illustrate that. The so-called "Purple Map" may make them feel better, but close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. A party that can only win in the Northeast and Left Coast is not a national party anymore. A party that manages to lose by 3 percent even with a huge boost from blatantly partisan favorable media coverage is on its deathbed politically.
I'm afraid that's right and -- since I'm not a Republican and don't share Karl Rove's ambition to do to the Democrats what Tony Blair has done to the Tories -- I'm not happy about it. But I think "self-marginalized" is about right.

Haha. Yeah. Woe is us! You guys were so cocky. Never mind that $500,000 was a hell of a lot to raise for relatively unknown liberal netizens, you poo-poohed it and "good-naturedly" advised us to just give up. You called us a whiny bunch of traitors with no hope of ever seeing our dreams realized who might as well just leave the country since everyone hated us so much. A couple hundred million dollars later, after reminding you pikers what a landslide looks like, you want us to help you up, give you our handkerchiefs, and pat you on the back?
You a**holes forgot that "hubris" played backwards sounds like "schadenfreude". No one in their right mind pities you. And the more you whine about how everyone's being so mean by pointing and laughing, the less anyone will care.

Whatever. If Republicans didn't want things to be this way they'd have gone with McCain in 2000. Instead, to paraphrase George Bush, they looked into the soul of the South Carolina "illegitimate black baby" smear and liked what they saw.

Like "9 ring, 4 0'Clock. 10 ring, 8 O'Clock. X ring. X ring. 10 ring, 2 O'Clock."
What? That doesn't sound familiar to you?
See, you liberals have never been to the range. And as Comrade Mao said, "Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun." We have the guns.
Why do you think we're buying 10,000 assault rifles and 1 million rounds of ammunition PER DAY?

Yeah, the comment might not be *technically* threatening, but let me ask the lefties in the audience a couple of questions.
1) Wouldn't you be freaking the hell out if a couple of Republicans told you, "We win. You lose. So take your lattes and hemp bracelets and Keith Olbermann tattoos and step to the back of the bus. WE JUST TOOK OVER THE COUNTRY, AND WE'RE CALLING THE SHOTS NOW." (Please note, this is a rhetorical question.)
2) How many times have you approached a Republican, IN PERSON, and said those words to his face?
OK, third question. If you answered yes to Question #2, do you still have any teeth?

DBinSC,
If someone walks up to my face and says WE JUST TOOK OVER THE COUNTRY, AND WE'RE CALLING THE SHOTS NOW I will double over laughing and then remind them calmly that the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world. They will retain their teeth as long as they don't come between me and the cradle.

I don't have any guns, and I certainly wouldn't plan on shooting any body, even if I did. I think it's much safer for everyone if I just let things take their course. Let everyone figure out what's best for the country. It should be obvious soon enough.

"I'm in charge now! Nyah! Me, that's who! Nyah! Things are gonna be different around here from now on! Mark my words! I'm calling the shots now, do you hear? Nyah!"
Say it in Edward G. Robinson's voice and it's hilarious.
I'm not worried. We've seen no evidence whatsoever that the Dems have any ideas other than tax, spend, and regulate, so the pendulum will swing back to the Repubs soon enough.
Nowadays the cycles are faster and faster; given how Obama seems to be producing at least one major screw-up per day, and since the Dems have done nothing since they took over the Congress in 2006, I think the Repubs have a pretty good chance of getting back in the electorate's good graces fairly soon.
Wait until Russia invades the Ukraine and Iran starts lobbing missiles at Israel. Obama will vote "present," and the country will see up close and personal what it's done to itself by electing this buffoon.

Maybe the Vermont schools could tach the kids to piss on a picture of our new President elect.
For the last 8 years I've been told that resistance is the highest form of patriotism.
Maybe they could take a dump on a picture of the new first lady as well.
Truth to power.

1) We've just gotten through 8 years of being told that very thing.
2) None, but if I did I wouldn't be all that worried about your proposed response...it's not as if all republicans are cage fighters (and the fact that your immediate response would be violence might be part of the reason you guys are on the outside looking in)
3) You might be retarded...question 3 would not receive a yes or no answer.

"1) We've just gotten through 8 years of being told that very thing."
No, you haven't. You may think you have, but you haven't. The reality is that Bush worked very hard to get Democrat buy-in on his policies, even letting Sen. Kennedy write much of his education policy.
The rest of the country cannot help it if you've been living through a persecution fantasy for eight years. You can get over yourself, or you can wrap yourself ever tighter in your fantasy world, your choice.

"By the way, where was all this chin-stroking during the full-on endzone dance after the 2004 election? Do you really think you can just airbrush the "permanent Republican majority" talk?"
I don't know about the Repubs, but a lot of us conservatives did plenty of chin-stroking after the 04 election. Personally, I was in equal parts grateful that we would still have a chance to see Iraq through to some sort of success before withdrawing, and apprehensive at Bush's ungodly spending patterns. 4 years later you can judge for yourself whether I was concerned about the same thing.
But very few Repubs or especially conservatives were doing any endzone dances, and those that were were either the trained monkeys in the media or assholes. I suspect it's the same for the Dems and liberals now.
You can stop dancing in the endzone now and try to consider what it's going to take for Obama to govern effectively. Legalizing abortion for 11-year-olds without having to notify their parents or provide proof of identity won't cut it. Neither will ensuring that 3rd-graders know how to put on a rubber, legalizing pot, spending 500% more on education, cutting the military by 90% or any of the other sorts of things the more extreme among you would like to see.
If you and he don't come up with realistic answers that most people can live with, you won't be there long. Because there's no permanent Repub majority, but there's no permanent Dem majority, either. It would be a mistake to assume that it's even a possibility. For either party.

"..but if I did I wouldn't be all that worried about your proposed responce..."
Of course you wouldn't, as old ladies are rarely able to defend themselves against bullies. The point is that you wouldn't say it to some people. The gutless fags out there in LA picking on old Mormon women, who are no more responsible for the Prop. 8 passage than blacks and Hispanics, comes to mind.

The most important sentence in the story:
"...with school officials blocking the exercise from classrooms amid concerns that it holds nonparticipating children up to scorn."
Always nice to know that our schools are leading the way in catering and teaching to the lowest common denominator.

And then refused to fund it
Laugh out loud funny.
U.S. Department of Education figures show $24.5 billion in federal No Child Left Behind funding for 2007, compared with $17.4 billion when the law was launched in early 2002
But hey, what are facts when you have your emotions to fall back on, right?

"Because there's no permanent Repub majority, but there's no permanent Dem majority, either. It would be a mistake to assume that it's even a possibility. For either party."
Not true, unfortunately. Obama's margin is smaller than the number of illegal aliens given amnesty in the last cycle. With the next amnesty, we add about 15 million to the voting rolls, at 80% democrat. No Republican will have a chance.
Add too that the coming census fraud (already announced as "an important Democrat initiative")to drive house seats and electoral college votes toward blue urban centers, and there will be a Democrat majority for at least a couple of generations.
Posted by: mendincope | Monday, November 17, 2008 at 11:33 AM
"Add to that the coming census fraud..."
Exactly, mendincope, why we need to be working right now to get Republicans back in Congress. Our last, best hope is the upcoming Congressional elections. If we don't win these, then yes, fraud and demographics will destroy this nation as we now know it.

Whatever happened to Vermont anyway? If my memory still serves, from the Civil War until Patrick Leahy only Republicans were elected in Vermont on a statewide basis. Now they have the evil Leahy and the worse Sanders in the Senate and not a conservative in sight who has a chance to be elected.
I always assumed that with the advent of the hippie generation Vermont was invaded by extreme left wing upper west side New Yorkers who have remade Vermont in their home states image. In effect Vermont has become East New York.
