Sarah rocked the house. Actually, I think she took the house and shoved it up the media's snout! heh
I had to look in to see what Andy had to say, him being her most deranged critic. He tried to dress it up, but inside ... he knows Biden lost. I guess he makes Ifill the "loser" because she didn't take Palin down. Actually, she did very well as a moderator, I think. The attention on her over her book probably helped.
9.23 pm. Biden is just dreadful. He speaks in Washingtonese. She just issues the soundbites and wrinkles her eyes and tells stories. And that works. The speed and chirpiness she delivers overwhelms one's ability to even quite absorb what she's saying. And it has put Biden off-stride. It's Biden who seems over-crammed.
10.30 pm. Biden's sobriety and authority and call for fundamental change is both reasonable and solid. It will resonate, I think. As you can read, I began this debate feeling that she was steam-rolling him. She was. But it was a steam-roller coming at you on fumes, not real fuel. She doesn't have it. Maybe one day she might. But not now. Biden's peroration was very, very strong. There is no contest here. There was only one loser: Gewn Ifill. She was intimidated, peripheral, neutered. The rules didn't help. But Ifill put in a dreadful performance.
Yeah, Andy has to spin it. But he knows the score. At least McCain now has a shot at coming back from where things were the last few days. But it's still up to McCain in the end.
Michelle Malkin: Sarah Rocks
Ace is celebrating and has some thoughts of what's coming next from McCain. Pass the rescue bill then hammer Obama on Fannie Mae and Feddie Mac? That makes sense. Remember, it is winning the final news cycles that matters most of all. One month out leaves time to turn things around, or for people to forget given the way information flows today.

"Dem party -
Homeless people, welfare recipients, ex-cons, drug-addicts, abortion lovers, union busters (see latest on Obama's friend), wacko preachers, terrorists, and now a person who identifies himself as an HDTV."
Might I suggest a few changes and you'd have the GOP?
GOP party
Creators of homeless people, corporate welfare recipients, ex-cons, drug-addicts, death sentence, union busters, wacko preachers, domestic terrorists.
Wow, this game is fun.

Hahaha. chris writes: "You and your fellow 'working men' don't have 2 nickels to rub together nor the wherewithal to know what to do with them. If Joe Six Pack screws up his investments, who will have to bail them out??"
I was wrong to call you a naif, chris. This statement above pegs you as a cynical elitist. Sorry for the rush to judgment. Bapity, bapity, bapity, bapity, bapity....

Palin, considering the expectations, started off fine. But by the end of hte debate, having given the same three or four answers regurgitated in various permutations - how many questions can you answer talking about energy or declaring your selvea "maverick - her act had gotten a bit old.
Yes, she didn't self-destruct. But my bet is she didn't convince many undecideds to vote for McCain. The debate only matters if it changes the dynamic of the election, which is flowing to Obama. It didn't do that, so it's a net win for Obama / Biden.

"Seriously, some working men would handle their SS funds fine but what position do you think those nearing retirement age might be in had they had control of a portion of that for investment? would you be in favor of a bailout for them?"
Holy crap, are you crazy, 112? Where do you lefties get the insane idea that the government (taxpayers) should ever bail anybody out?
First you forcibly take money out of their pockets, you promise them they will get it back in spades (by forcibly taking money out of the pockets of the next generation) and then they have no savings and what SS now gives them isn't enough? And then you have the gall to say some of them won't make wise decisions on investments? Help help the nuts are running things.

Somebody on this board is from Texas and maybe can answer this question
Didn't a large group in Texas opt out of SS and subsequently receive a much higher pension because their money was invested?

Yes, Lala. That rings a bell. Galveston.

"Is the Program Safe? One of the biggest challenges to privatizing Social Security is to ensure the safety of the contributors' investments. Workers under the Alternate Plan are required to make their payroll contributions, and the money is invested in annuities with a highly rated insurance company. Though the interest rate can fluctuate from year to year, the financial institution that invests the money must pay a guaranteed interest rate for that year.
Conclusion. Employees of three Texas counties are enjoying rapid growth in their retirement incomes, better benefits than those offered by Social Security and the satisfaction of knowing that the money deposited in their accounts belongs to them and will be there when they retire. Privatizing Social Security is not a distant dream; for some Americans it is a present reality. Fairness and true social security demand that all Americans have the same opportunity."

The GOP has a much, much smaller percentage of evil-doers than the Dems. The death sentence (a good thing) was overwhelming approved by the voters in NY State, a 5-3 Dem State. NY also has a large contingent of Dem "farmers" getting subsidies. The Dems have PETA, Earth first, Berkley tree-huggers, etc., etc.

Lala,
I'm not opposed to the death penalty in principle, there are certainly crimes that warrant the take of a life as punishment but the way it's utilized is uneven and often just flat out wrong. If you could guarantee to me that no one on death row is innocent of their crime then I might be ok with it, but you can't.

Wow, if you think Palin won the debate then you were charmed by her looks and "folksyness" and hardly by her words. Get out from under a rock and see the world as it is and not as you want it to be.
Read the debate transcript, and you'll find she spoke gibberish half the time while hardly addressing any real points. In fact, she's turning into a "nudge, wink, maverick" talking point, akin to Guiliani's "noun, verb, Iraq".
Posted by: Kevin | Friday, October 03, 2008 at 12:29 PM
It's amazing to me that wingers believe that what they are looking for in a candidate, i.e. the incurious, anti-intellectual, "folksy," rambling, contemptuous, fact-free Sarah Palin, is what many or most Americans look for in a candidate. Granted Bush the Lesser won twice, but I think Americans are ready to listen to answers on the issues instead of hockey-mom schtick. The total inability of wingers to look inward at their own failings is remarkable.

The Fat Lady's warming up.
A CBS poll of 473 uncommitted voters produced equivalent, if less dramatic, results. In an incomplete tally on Thursday night, 46 percent said Biden had won the debate -- compared to 21% who thought Palin had won -- and 18% said they were now committed to the Obama-Biden ticket.
In a CNN poll of voters in general, not only did Biden outscore Palin by 51% to 36%, but almost half of those who felt Palin had exceeded expectations still believed she was not qualified to be president.
Obama's leading in Virgina, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Florida, with a virtual tie in North Carolina. Bad, bad news for McLame. If that holds, it's gonna be an Obama Landslide.
Posted by: Worst President Ever | Friday, October 03, 2008 at 12:39 PM
I'm losing my patience here. Do you even understand the concept of a scientific poll, you stupid fuck?
Yup -- that's when CNN and other news agencies deliberately oversample Democrats to skew results.
And silly boy jharp is this morning trying to rewrite the Constitution because Biden, the so-called "professor of constitutional law" misquoted it, and is also desperately running around trying to explain why Obama demands that people be allowed to purchase a house they can't afford, then go through bankruptcy and have the judge arbitrarily reduce or cancel their mortgage principal.

From the Boxer "report":
But -- and this is an important point -- Social Security benefits go up each year with inflation. Annuities under the Texas plan do not.
So Boxer was comparing something that is indexed to inflation with something that isn't. Gee, big surprise, the other one is going to be larger.
But in terms of the value of what people put in versus what they get out? What Bimbo Boxer doesn't tell people is that, because of the bend points in Social Security, those who work hard their entire lives and succeed receive proportionately far LESS benefits for what they pay into the system than those who work the absolute minimum.
In other words, Social Security punishes the successful and coddles the lazy. What a surprise.
Posted by: North Dallas Thirty | Friday, October 03, 2008 at 12:58 PM
Let me guess - any poll that has Palin winning is "scientific". Any poll that has Biden ahead is "unscientific".
This CBS News poll was conducted online by Knowledge Networks among a nationwide random sample of 473 uncommitted voters - voters who don’t yet know who they will vote for, or who have chosen a candidate but may still change their minds - who have agreed to watch the debate.
Posted by: Worst President Ever | Friday, October 03, 2008 at 01:04 PM
Yep, the debate was an absolute triumph for Palin. Also, everyone in America loves and respects McCain's maverick-ness, Operation Chaos was a smashing success, we're really close to victory in Iraq, and Americans are once again in full support of the war there.
[/sarcasm]
What's going to happen to you people on November 5th, after the votes have been tallied? You're going to have to convince yourselves that only massive voting fraud can explain Obama's victory ...

I think you are insane. She got swept. I am an independent and wanted to come to your site to see if you would actually concede defeat when appropriate. She was ridiculous, did not answer any substantive question coherently, and kept winking as though she was involved in a game show and not the V.P. Debate. She evidenced the dumbing down of America, and it is too bad, because I really liked John McCain. But who could vote for him now, knowing she is in the future? By the way, I am also a female, so save your "sexism" cries for someone else...

You people are idiots. Palin is simply the most embarrassing political figure to emerge in this country in the last 150 years. And that is saying A LOT, in this day and age.
I have no idea how I found this website, but I will retrace my steps and ensure that I never return.
Enjoy the Obama presidency, neanderthals. We'll make sure that even YOU get to keep your healthcare.

What is a girl doing in that cartoon of Andrew Sullivan? Or is that a guy in drag. Andy is one of those guys--I mean gays, or gay guys--who don't like women period. What woman has he ever spoken of approvingly? Given his proclivities, it's no surprise that he doesn't get Sarah Palin.

"it's no surprise that he doesn't get Sarah Palin."
Look at the polls, alot of people don't "get Sarah Palin". You can be folksy AND smart Sarah, just ask Mark Twain or Will Rogers.

If that's what you think then you haven't watched it. It's a 3-d physical chess match, it pits all of the owrlds major fighting styles against each other to see which comes out on top. Boxing on the other hand is a corrupt, dated sport that is withering on the vine.

You are probably right - in terms of things like pitting Muay Thai against Brazilian Jujitsu. But to my mind's eye, it is only the smallest bit more appeal than the bread-and-circus type fare of the old Roman gladiatorial contests, especially given its role as "sports entertainment"... it is in the same universe as the WWE.
