Update: You'll see at the link Ace offers their defense. A defense about searching records of lottery winners being proof of a normal protocol. Thats BS. They do that as there is money involved and the state can step in and grab an overdue child support payment. I suspect that's a formal policy, not done just because someone is in the news.
Ace asks the question:
PS, the tip here (which I'm still looking for evidence on) is that Helen Jones-Kelly just happens to be a supporter of Barack Obama.
Well, this just might be a clue:
DAYTON — Some say Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama is an exception to a stereotype about black male success.
But Parity Inc. co-chairwoman Helen Jones-Kelly said the senator from Illinois is just one example of a strong African American male leader.
"We have outstanding African American men – men of color – throughout this country," she said.
Parity Inc., an organization dedicated to fostering racial equality, hosted the 17th annual program at Sinclair Community College's David H. Ponitz Center.

Dan, I think it's likely she did the search because she is an Obama supporter. This says something about her. Are you infering it says something about the Democratic party? About Obama?

funny how the polls in pa and oh don't budge,
even when you look at murtha's rants, and ohio-acorn/sec of state/joe/ joe's record search...
even if it didn't budge the polls, it should play into turnout, which pollsters don't seem to address.
maybe they should start asking how pissed off are you as a voter?
trust me, if the dividends aren't evident now, they will be by nov 4.
50-45...at present
even with the modest lead, 88% turnout among mccain supporters, versus 79% turnout for obama, assuming the polls are correct, and mccain wins the popular. Who am I to argue with the logic or weighting a sample towards minorities and youth voters...they strike me as such fine and responsible people.
I'm really curious about the mcain democrats...
not really worried about any obama republicans.

Are you saying that if an individual has collected on a state program or that if monies were paid out for their benefit or that of their family that the state should not be able to get those monies back? It was common practice to run names against lottery winners, etc. to check to see if anyone who was/is on the roles paid back the money they owed. What do you think happens to the home of the spouse who is able to stay in it when the person on medicade dies and that spouse passes on? Should it be in his/her estate or paid back to the entity who had been supporing it, the spouse, and the individual for perhaps many, many years.

???
Actually, the only right a state lottery has is to verify the ticket and then pay out the money. If an individual owes money to the state, another individual or entity then that is his obligation to pay. In a democratic and free society, the state's only recourse is through legal means if funds are owed it and the same is true of individuals or entities. I do not know what the laws in Ohio say about this but I seriously question the actions of Ms Jones-Kelly. Is the State of Ohio saying that it has the right to investigate any person, any time, at their discretion? Can they tap phones as well? I thought Democrats were tremendously concerned with any violations of civil rights. I guess only with those of fellow travelers.
Posted by: Philip McDaniel | Tuesday, October 28, 2008 at 09:01 AM
I am starting to see that the democrats do what is best for the democrats. When it comes to advancing their agenda then it is okay to break any and all rules. when it comes to the republicns, it is never okay. A little hypocritical if you ask me and concerning.
Look at this alleged million dollar special:
"The Obama campaign purchased a half hour of airtime on NBC, Fox and CBS, spending about $1 million per network."
"One source said ABC offered the airtime, but the Obama campaign, for whatever reason, declined to buy an ad."
http://www.thrfeed.com/2008/10/abc-will-air-da.html
It is totally obscene to spend this money on BO. Totally obscene. They are a bunch of hypocrites. With three million dollars, they could buy how many homes saving them from foreclosure? With three million dollars they could feed how many hungry people?
Also, maybe the first network to be on the campaign's "sheet list" is ABC. What did they do? Did we miss something?
Posted by: mary | Tuesday, October 28, 2008 at 09:11 AM
Philip - I did not mean that the lottery checks, but there used to be anyhow in my state an agency whose purpose was to get money back for the state from people who owed it. In my example of a spouse being allowed to retain the family home during his/her lifetime, a lien is put on the property as soon as the state starts paying on benefits. I don't know by what right Ms Jones-Kelly in Ohio did her research, but it surely does seem suspicious. Being neither Democrat or Republican I can only speak as an unaffiliated voter - and I personally am very concerned with violations of civil rights of EVERYONE.

Your comments are clearer now. I agree by the way -- I think the same holds true here in Florida regarding a state agency but I am honestly not sure.

"I am so sick of this. The guy is not 100% African American. He is 50% Ordinary White Male."
There are no pure 100% African Americans, not even Dr Martin Luther King, Jr. If that were the case, everyone would be as black as tar paper with very prominent negroid features. "Pure" Africans were brought to these shores as slaves but the slave masters infiltrated the race by raping and having their way with the slave women. Slave ownership had its priviledges. That fact is so well documented in history. Back then, if you had an ounce of Negro blood, you were deemed "Negro" and thus could never term yourself bi-racial or anything else. The terms bi-racial and such only came into existence after white women were free to mate with the black man without the black man paying a steep price, usually his life. Since she (the white woman) wanted a better designation for her offspring, the term bi-racial became common. Therefore, no matter Obama's racial make up, his skin tone says black, negro, African-American That is what people see first. That is how Senator Obama is known, and that is simply how the world works for now.

Seriously, gotta have a brass set to do what he is doing. If he can't keep his word and signed agreements why should the american people think that he will keep any of his promises to them? If a person shows ahead of time their lack of judgment and integrity then people are forewarned and forearmed.

Obama never made the promise you are referring to. In fact this is a direct quote from him written on the "piece of paper" you are referring to.
“If I am the Democratic nominee, I will aggressively pursue an agreement with the Republican nominee to preserve a publicly financed general election.”
Their lawyers had meetings which were not fruitful according to the Obama campaign and Obama when with private financing while McCain took public money and further put a drain on our economy. So much for personal responsibility.
Posted by: Spartan112 | Tuesday, October 28, 2008 at 11:08 AM
Obama isn't going to keep most of his campaign promises, that is a given. His crazy supporters don't care and most of them won't care....they already feel guilty for not being on welfare.
He is going to be the mirror image of George Bush: radical, imperial and oblivious to oblivious flaws and failures of his policy. The only difference between Obama and Bush is that one is a conservative radical idealogue nut job and the other is a liberal radical idealogue nut job. They will both show the same disdain for the rule of law and precedent.

I don't trust the voting process this year at all. I mean, the way things have been going it is conceivable for this guy to be voting in Manhattan, then hopping on a train and voting in Brooklyn and then hopping on a plane and voting in Chicago. I'm not saying he is doing this, I'm just saying the thought occurred to me that this may be possible for anyone to do. Is there a way to cross check and make sure that anyone isn't voting more than once in more than one place?

What she did was illegal?
All this nonsense about routinely checking lottery winnings is typical Democrats lies. A formal request is processed thru government channels to the various agencies which would allow such an invasion of a citizen's privacy.
Someone was fired at the Department of State for checking the passport files of McCain, Clinton and Obama's, but an average citizen ask a simple question of Obama the Unquestionable, which makes him look like the imbecile he is, and his supporters with government power within hours start combing thru this man's private information to destroy him. She should be fired.

I bet in the near future morons jharp and his fellow Obama Youths will be turning their neighbors in to the local office of Obama's "civilian national security force" for voicing disagreement with the "O-Fuerher".

Alaskan Legislator Tells Maddow: 'What Good Does It Do' to Fire a 'Dangerous' Cop?
By Jack Coleman
October 27, 2008 - 16:01 E
An unintentionally hilarious assertion was made by Alaska State Senator Hollis French on Rachel Maddow's MSNBC cable show Friday night.
Maddow and French were discussing the so-called Troopergate scandal and Gov. Sarah Palin's alleged grudge in firing former Alaska public safety commissioner Walt Monegan for not reopening an investigation of a state trooper who went through a nasty divorce with Palin's sister.
Hollis, a Democrat who led the state legislature's investigation into Palin's actions in firing Monegan last July, cited "severe logical fallacies" in claims made by Palin and her husband Todd, including the Palins' request for reduced security despite their assertions that Wooten was a rogue cop.
Then came the coup de grace from French:
Stop and think about, what good does it do to fire a trooper if you really think he's dangerous?
Yes -- the man actually uttered those words ... loud enough to hear ... on national television. The mind reels when confronted with such a worldview. Could be worse, however. If French were wearing a badge, for example.

Well, the way the campaign has been run, lots of smoke and mirrors, of course now there will be dirty tricks. It is the dirty tricks after he is elected that concern me though.
I am undecided still but BO isn't making me want to vote for him at all. Don't care for McCain much. I seriously might not vote at all. I've voted in every election since I was eligible to vote even the little ones so this would be major for me.

Senator Obama's Four Tax Increases for People Earning Under $250k
By Ned Barnett
I confess. Senator Obama's two tax promises: to limit tax increases to only those making over $250,000 a year, and to not raise taxes on 95% of "working Americans," intrigued me. As a hard-working small business owner, over the past ten years I've earned from $50,000 to $100,000 per year. If Senator Obama is shooting straight with us, under his presidency I could look forward to paying no additional Federal taxes -- I might even get a break -- and as I struggle to support a family and pay for two boys in college, a reliable tax freeze is nearly as welcome as further tax cuts.
However, Senator Obama's dual claims seemed implausible, especially when it came to my Federal income taxes. Those implausible promises made me look at what I'd been paying before President Bush's 2001 and 2003 tax cuts, as well as what I paid after those tax cuts became law. I chose the 2000 tax tables as my baseline -- they reflect the tax rates that Senator Obama will restore by letting the "Bush Tax Cuts" lapse. I wanted to see what that meant from my tax bill.

In Indian River County's primary, election officials didn't realize for two days that more than 10,000 extra votes had been cast, possibly because of an incomplete test of that county's vote transmitting system.
