Obama Shouldn't Get A Pass On This

This may be a bit uncomfortable but it warrants pointing out. Obama made this brief video appearance today to talk about his Grandmother, spinning it somewhat into a character/judgment issue: "I didn't want to make the same mistake twice." That's because he said his Mother died before he was able to get back to see her.

Also keep in mind Obama used his Mother's illness for a commercial on health care:

My mother died of cancer at 53. In those last painful months, she was more worried about paying her medical bills than getting well.

- and has invoked her name repeatedly with regard to his book.

"I think sometimes that had I known she would not survive her illness, I might have written a different book - less a meditation on the absent parent, more a celebration of the one who was the single constant in my life," he wrote in the preface to his memoir, "Dreams From My Father."

Now Obama's Mother was diagnosed with both ovarian and uterine cancer in 1994.

In 1994, Ann Durham returned to Hawaii to be near her widowed mother after being diagnosed with ovarian cancer and uterine cancer. A year later, while son Barack Obama was making his first run for political office, Ann Durham died.

She didn't pass until November of 1995.

Ann died on November 7, 1995 at age 52.

Obama wasn't running for anything the whole time she was dying. He wasn't elected until 1996 a full year after her death.

Obama was elected to the Illinois Senate in 1996

Obama didn't "launch" anything until 1995 at the home of Bill Ayers.

The prognosis for ovarian cancer remains poor to this day.

Obama paints himself as this empathic figure. Yet, we know he has a step-brother living in a hut in Kenya, or wherever. And his Mother lay dying for almost if not a full year without a visit from her son - and now he trots her out in commercial because she was fighting with insurance companies?

Doesn't that bother anyone? It doesn't add up to someone who cares about anyone but himself if you ask me.

You know Dan this is one of those times I just don't agree with the tone of this argument.

I have spent the past 20 years treating cancer patients. I have watched too many families be torn apart by the pain and suffering of fighting for their lives. I also watched my mother waste away from cervical cancer in my early twenties. She was only 45 mins away but I found it extremely hard to get over to visit her regularly and she went very fast. At the time I had two jobs and school but when she did pass I would look back and think "I should have seen her more".

Everyone here knows that I can't stand "Barry", "Xerxes" or "the One" but when we start down the path of those haters at Daily Koz, Huffington and other troll sites we legitimize their attacks or blatent hateful comments.

Is it possible that Xerxes is using this as a tactic, you bet, but regardless of his intentions but I'm gonna have to give him a pass on this one.

And I had a close family member who although having had cancer in and out of remission, and numerous surgeries... I made a point to keep in closer contact than I had in so many years before.

And when that relative finally went home to be with the Lord (the terminal phase of the cancer lasted about five weeks), we made a point to visit as often as we could. It drew our far-flung family as close as it has ever been in decades.

This is why I say it is a cultural thing - conservative, traditional European-American culture puts a very high stake on family.

And this is why I find it difficult to have sympathy for Obama, much less any excuse he can offer for not visiting his mama at any point during her illness... and then having the cast-iron gall to trot her out as TALKING POINT for his political programme (socialised medicine).

(Actually, I lived over there for a good bit, and picked up the local spelling. It sort of stuck to me rather well, too... You'd not believe the flak one picks up for spelling colour without the "u", or referring to car tyres as "tires". And may the literary police and the school headmasters be frighted so easily, should I go to the city centre and order a litre of beer instead of a pint - although if I will have a pint, may it be the heftier Imperial Pint rather than the lesser US Pint!)

Funny thing is, not too many folks here raise a big stink about my brandishing the extra "u" or other such seemingly supernumerary letters - it must be that linguistic laissez-faire that speaks to them, "...if Seeker, that poor sod, can be bothered to type those extra letters, then so be it: 'tis but his own carpal tunnels he'll have to deal with."
