I'm not going to second guess, though I'm sure some will. Iowa has looked out of reach for awhile and the standard polls no sign of that changing.
Not only is McCain in Iowa today - they claim to be opening up more offices there. It seems as though they are banking on Obama simply not being able to close the deal. Either they know something we don't from their internals, or this is one dumb move. I'm hoping it's the former.
Last month, The Des Moines Register's Iowa Poll showed roughly a quarter of likely voters who were supporting or leaning toward one candidate said they could still be persuaded to support the other candidate.
Other surveys in Iowa showed similar potential flexibility, although there have been few polls in the state since the economic crisis of the past month has worsened.
McCain is expected today at a rally at the River Center to discuss his proposal to let the federal government buy roughly $300 billion in defaulted mortgages. On Friday, McCain also proposed suspending the rule that requires retirees to begin selling off their 401(k) and IRA accounts by age 70.
While McCain's campaign made a point of noting the new offices in Iowa this week, the GOP nominee is contesting nearby Wisconsin more aggressively.
The two states were decided by some of the narrowest margins in 2000 and 2004. Democrat Al Gore carried Iowa in 2000, while Republican President George W. Bush carried the state four years later. Gore carried Wisconsin in 2000 while Democrat John Kerry held it in 2004.

dan, didn't I hear this week that he closed some offices in another state? Thus giving the BO camp more "we are going to win that state so he is leaving" fodder?

A McCain appearance in Iowa was just interrupted by an Obama supporter. Wow, McCain lets everyone in whereas to go to see Obama you have to be a big bucks contributor and vetted.
They chanted "we want jobs". Maybe they should ask Bill Clinton why he sold them down the river with NAFTA.

How was the rally? What is she like in person?

Mary,
A friend met Sarah Palin at the firefighters' memorial in New York. Said she was lovely.

Lala, she seems very genuine. She "threw out" the puck at the phillies game and she bought two of her kids and shared the honor with a regular fan and she seemed so gracious. And they were playing the rangers and the ranger player from Alaska was coming towards her and she recognized him and gave him quite a nice greeting. When the phillies player gave her the puck she gave it to the regular fan, but you knew she would do that.

Ok, ok, people won't stop laughing. It's "dropped the puck", apologies to all hockey fans, not the ones like me who only become interested when their team is hot...lol

Sorry to hear about your flood. When you live in a place that is either
A. Known for a natural disaster
B. Part of a Bruce Springsteen song
you know you live in a shit town.

I don't know why Sen. McCain would spend time or money in Iowa. He pretty much burned his bridges there when he accurately stated that all the ethanol subsidies were nonsense and skipped the 2000 Iowa caucus boondoggle. He competed in Iowa in 2007-2008, but didn't put much into it. Iowans never forgive that sort of thing. He stands a better (though still unlikely) chance in Pennsylvania. I hope he knows something we don't, but I'd feel better seeing him in the swing states where he has to win and the leaning Obama states where he has the best chance.
