Update: I want to clarify this in the face of short-sighted nonsense like this:
To his great credit, John McCain seemed to regain some of his old conscience and honor speaking to a town hall meeting in Minnesota. The crowd didn’t like it one bit.
It isn't about McCain's conscience and no one should suggest McCain's thinking isn't correct. But he should not be in positions where he is offering up soundbytes to the opposition - ones that directly undermine the goal of McCain's own ads. You are throwing away money on ads saying Obama is too risky if the candidate gets up in front of a crowd and says he is not. It's as incompetent as you can get in terms of politics.
McCain shouldn't be saying anything and he shouldn't be doing townhalls at this point, let alone ones that produce such soundbytes. It doesn't get any dumber than that. His campaign is utterily pathetic right now. It's making Bob Dole look good. Meanwhile Palin is visiting West Virginia??? If West Virginia is in doubt for McCain, it's going to take some bombshell to turn this one around. And undermining your own ad campaign is no way to start - no matter what you believe inside.
Obama's base that is. Stick a fork in this idiot. He's trying to play it both ways. At this point, his campaign looks schizophrenic and he just looks stupid. Take down the ads and give it up if you're done. Stop wasting people's time and money.
LAKEVILLE, Minn.-- Republican rage against Barack Obama claimed a new victim today: John McCain.
McCain was booed at a town-hall meeting here when he rebuked a man who said he was "scared…to bring a child up" under an Obama presidency. "I have to tell you he is a decent person and a person that you do not have to be scared of as president of the United States," McCain said to audible disapproval.

Another SUPER-UGGH moment - if McCain feels so compelled to stay stupid things like that then why doesn't he at least add something like "of course it's clear the markets sure don't feel that way"

McCain may be trying to salvage the last vestiges of his honor.
He knows Ayers, and ACORN, and Rezko are losing him votes and so are the lynch mobs at his rallies cravenly wishing for Obama's assassination.

Is anyone else starting to wonder...
Has McCain given up?
Maybe McCain no longer wants to become our President. Maybe he doesn't want to inherit this economic mess, deal with the fall-out and live the rest of his days with a target on his back for defeating the "First African-American President of the World".
Maybe McCain is too tired now; maybe he hasn't got time for the pain. Let someone else deal with this crisis and these maniacs.
He's served his country - he gave at the office!
McCain may have privately decided that he's ready to just hang out in Sedona and enjoy the sunsets...
Washington winters are cold. The Repubs already hate McCain because he's a reformer and a renegade. The Dems will hate him because he defeated their "Promised One".
Shucks, let "O" have it! Let HIM take the heat. He's young, he'll learn. They'll turn and tear him to pieces too. Because that's what happens when you cast pearls before swine.
McCain might be think'n "See Ya".
And more than 50% of Americans would deserve it too!

McCain did this the night of the first debate. I'm telling you, he is throwing the fight. The question is why? BTW, Rudy and Mitt and Mike would have fought to the bitter end.

McCain seized the microphone from the hands of a woman who called Obama "an Arab," and scolded her.
What a loser.

> Has McCain given up?
No. McCain has become the warrior again. Standing there in front of a crowd and saying what he said, was one of the most courageous acts of his life. This had become un-American. It was becoming a huge vote loser. It played only to the already established base and no one else was interested.
There is nothing honorable or American about trashing a presidential candidate with being an Arab and a traitor.
Posted by: Natasha | Friday, October 10, 2008 at 07:57 PM
It just shows that McCain doesn't have the same Chicago political hack mentality of Xerxes.

"McCain seized the microphone from the hands of a woman who called Obama "an Arab," and scolded her.

By God...if a some dumb ignorant hick wants to spout off and lose some more independent votes, she should be afforded that right.

Wow, looks like McCain is trying to resalvage what is left of his integrity and honor. He deserves SOME credit for that. However, is own supporters booed him for it. Crazy. I bet he knew that whipping the knuckle-draggers into a violent frenzy of rabid hate wasn't going to work. Alas, he lined up with the GOP base for an entire week while the DOW dropped more than in any other week ever. Perhaps he can make nice with America and be a productive member of the Senate during the Obama administration.

I just adore Michael Steele and I noticed he was sitting in for Hannity. Can't stand Alan Colms because of what he wrote about Palin, I don't know how Monica actually sits across the Thanksgiving table from him as he has no moral bounds. Anyway, as usual Michael Steele had a great point. He said that becasue of his associations Senator Obama could not pass a security clearance for a government job, yet, he is running for the highest government job in the land. didn't even think about that.

You all must be very very proud.

Rednecks is so very funny. I wonder what they will do with themselves under an Obama administration? There's only so much nascar a person can watch, right.

This behavior tells me McCain's internals tell him he is toast. He needs to make nicey for when he is just a Senator again and Obama is President.
Posted by: checkers | Friday, October 10, 2008 at 10:07 PM
Good for McCain for standing up to a wingnut, but it's too little too late. He's already sold his soul to Karl Rove.

It is precisely this kind of bullshit from McCain that made me dread his candidacy. There is nothing "honorable" or "dignified" about delivering the country into the hands of Obama.
Posted by: Deuce Geary | Friday, October 10, 2008 at 11:12 PM
His response to the "Arab" line, justified.
But saying that we do not have to be scared of Mr. Obama as president of the United States makes the Ayers connection not only irrelevant, but it undermines his own credibility. Instead of salvaging "what is left of his integrity and honor" Mr. McCain did the opposite. The clear implication of paling around with terrorists is that the person doing the paling is someone you should be "scared of as president of the United States." Since Mrs. Palin has publicly asserted the former, Mr. McCain's words stab her in the back.

If McCain is unable to see that an Obama presidency would be a disaster, maybe he doesn't deserve to be president himself. Still the lesser of two evils, though.

McCain had advisers in the beginning and this is the way he was behaving. Then we saw the old John McCain and everyone said "he must have gotten better advisers" Guess those guys left as he is back to the buy in the beginning of the campaign.
I think his advisers are misreading the polls and the people. They think the Bradley effect will push him through. I think the long election cycle has made people comfortable with the guy and they won't look at color issues. Think McCain is making huge mistakes.
But, at least I've decided that I won't vote for Obama. Just don't know if I will write in Mitt or Rudy or Mickey Mouse for that matter.
Posted by: mary | Saturday, October 11, 2008 at 01:25 AM
It's just a repeat of the "How do we beat that Hillary bitch?" and "Barak HUSSEIN Obama" memes.
It's the more rabid of us that get upset that McCain won't join us in some of the silliness.

"But, at least I've decided that I won't vote for Obama. Just don't know if I will write in Mitt or Rudy or Mickey Mouse for that matter".
How does President Obama sound to you? Just let it roll off your tongue? Practice it. You will like it.

"paling around with terrorists"
Is that where your husband is a member of a secessionist group trying to destroy the United States of America? Or is it when you give a speech to that secessionist group saying you approve of their work?
Indeed, let's talk about palin' around with terrorists.
Sarah Palin has much stronger ties to terrorism than Obama does. Seriously. Please read up on her involvement with the Alaskan Independence Party. There is a lot there that should concern true conservatives. McCain is right to abandon the tack. It is a non-winner. If it was a winner, the guy winning would be doing it right now vs. Palin, because there is a lot of ammo there. And if it was a winner, Obama never would have made it this far. It's not like the latest hoopla is due to some new information. It's the same old stuff that didn't work on him before!
There are plenty of reasons not to vote for Obama besides the fact he used to sit on the board of a charitable foundation (one started by a close friend of Ronald Reagan!) alongside some old-ass hippie. Nobody cares about the 60's when the economy is where it is. And insulting somebody that 65+% of people have a favorable impression of -- whether or not they're gonna vote for him -- is only a good idea if you want to get 35% of the vote.

excerpt
Lynette Clark, the chairman of the AIP, told ABC News on Monday that Palin and her husband Todd were members in 1994, even attending the 1994 statewide convention in Wasilla. Clark was AIP secretary at the time.
This, it should be noted, does not square with official records.
Gail Fenumiai, director of the Alaska Division of Elections, tells ABC News that regardless of the impression given to members of the Alaskan Independence Party, "Gov. Sarah Palin first registered to vote in the state in May 1982 as a Republican, and she has not changed her party affiliate with the Division of Elections since that time."
Clark on Tuesday night said that she had been mistaken.
But for whatever reason, Clark thought that in 1994 Palin was a kindred spirit.

McCain's a stalking horse for Obama: he has long since decided to agree with the Rockefeller/Rothschild plans for the Obama presidency, and will be rewarded handsomely with the ability to make with the nice bi-partisan leadership in the 400+ seat Democratic hypermajority Congress.
It's over, it's done with: say "PRESIDENT OBAMA".
Our republican, constitutional form of government has finally been toppled, and We, the Peons... are (mostly) loving it.
November 5th will bring us more "Dancing with the Stars", and we'll all go back to sleep, thankful that this tragic rape of our Founding Father's hard work is complete.
