Update: Well, due to the extreme criticism from the "Laura killed her high school sweetheart, Cheney shot his friend, Bushitler" Left - I felt I should update and bump this post. I'm sorry if my sarcasm regarding the pillow reference came across as too unkind. I am certain Obama is a kind man. Consequently, I don't actually believe he would "smother" his Grandma with a pillow.
I imagine his compassion would compel him to use a plastic bag. But as that is so environmentally unsound, I didn't want to even suggest it in case it might damage his reputation among the faithful, so many of them being Green and all.
We now return you to our regularly scheduled post.
You just knew it was coming. Obama is so determined to see Grandma - he just had to also sit down for an interview about it first. This is kind of funny for a couple reasons, though. So deeply is he worried ... he even managed to work it into an attack on McCain. What a noble guy, this Obama.
"One of the things I want to make sure of is that I had a chance to sit down with her and talk to her," Obama told Roberts. "She's still alert and she's still got all her faculties. And I want to make sure that I don't miss that opportunity right now."
"And then we're going to find out what chores I can do, because I'm sure there's been some stuff that's been left undone," he said.
Obama was in Hawaii for a full week - on vacation just in August. Did he do some "chores" for Grandma? Did they sit down and "talk."
Yeah, for all of one hour out of an entire week based on reports. And he didn't even take the wife and kids. But, you know, everytime he or Biden open their mouths they get in trouble, so maybe it's best to just lie low for a while and bolster Obama's image with people who might be having trouble signing on to his con? Pathetic. I'm not doubting she is ill. But believe me, if you think this guy would leave the campaign trail for an hour if he felt he were running from behind, he wouldn't do it. Not unless he thought it helped him to do so.
Obama -- escorted by Secret Service and accompanied by a few campaign staff and a pool of reporters and camera crews -- arrived at about 4:10 p.m. yesterday and spent an hour with his 85-year-old maternal grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, who helped raise him. He was not accompanied by his wife, Michelle, and two daughters.
Yeah, no time for politics now - back to today's interview:
He also dismissed McCain's latest attack that Obama "will say anything to get elected." McCain was referring to Obama's alleged shift in his plan for who would be eligible for tax cuts.
"I think it's fair to say that if you look at the quality of our campaign and theirs," he said, "who's been more civil, who's talked about the issues, as opposed to trying to attack peoples' character, I think we get a pretty good grade."
Grandma, at least, would approve.
Man. I hope his numbers don't start to drop. He might have to hold a pillow against her face and maybe later break into tears the way Hillary did. Only I suspect hers were genuine.

You people are the worst. This article and it's author are truly UN-AMERICAN!!! Sore losers!!!
Go OBAMA/BIDEN '08!!!

"He might have to hold a pillow against her face"? My god, the right has become so morally bankrupt. No wonder you're losing. When you win, you have nothing to offer but greed and more greed and now when it looks dead certain you'll lose, your cynicism trumps even common decency. Go back and read Dante's Inferno -- there's a circle of hell reserved just for you.

Well, this has got to be the bottom of the barrel for the right. Of course, Palin making an exhibit of her special needs kid--all the while insisting that family is off limits!!--that was all perfectly sincere.
The right is even losing the family values competition.

"Man. I hope his numbers don't start to drop. He might have to hold a pillow against her face and maybe later break into tears the way Hillary did. Only I suspect hers were genuine."
Sorry to interrupt the love-in with your fans. I've never heard of you, but I'll remember that sentence. Care to explain to a general audience where you think your career is headed, after this statement? I see your career going into a deep, dark place.

hold a pillow against her face? what the hell is wrong with you?
Posted by: Jason | Friday, October 24, 2008 at 05:57 PM
Wow, if you're getting this ugly before the Obama victory, I can't wait for Nov. 5, when some of that vitriol will be directed at your fellow Republicans. That's gonna be sweeeet.

You really wrote this?
You really would suggest that Barack would KILL HIS OWN GRANDMOTHER TO GET VOTES?
I don't usually use all caps.
But, get a grip on reality, man. Have you no sense of decency?
So much for the party of family values. I'm mystified by how those who purport to share my values have turned into purveyors of indecent rhetoric.
Part of the reason that I, who have supported and admired Mr. McCain for half my life, shall not be voting for his party and its hate-spewing surrogates.

Wow. Family values party eh? With all due respect, fuck you.

this is the saddest thing i've read in a while. i officially give up on this country if shit like this considered acceptable

A pillow to Grandma's face.
My God, man, have you no decency?
I know there are some seriously disturbed people in this campaign, on both sides, but you, sir ... words fail me.
A pillow to Grandma's face.
This is what passes as political discourse in your world. This is the image you wish to share, brimming from your mind. This is how you believe you can convince others to support your candidate.
A pillow to Grandma's face.
It is hard to believe you actually wrote that for public view. A pillow to Grandma's face. I ask again ... have you no decency?
Posted by: Gus | Friday, October 24, 2008 at 06:01 PM
I hope no one you love (if you are capable of such emotion) has a terminal illness.
Posted by: homer | Friday, October 24, 2008 at 06:02 PM
Hey, you get to live in a world where for the next four years Obama is president and the Dems control Congress. It's that happy thought that allows us anti-Americans to chuckle at your pathetic whining :-)
Posted by: BobTheBuilder | Friday, October 24, 2008 at 06:03 PM
Wow. That's a pretty fucking vile thing to say. Enjoy your well-deserved losses on Nov 4.
Posted by: EvilCornbread | Friday, October 24, 2008 at 06:03 PM
dude, you have to be kidding me. seriously, i'm not even a rabid political person -- i voted for bush in 2000, something i'm clearly not proud of now -- but this is gross. think about what you want to do with your life. consider whether this is the best you can contribute.
Posted by: Brian | Friday, October 24, 2008 at 06:04 PM
Dan ---
It's just killing you... isn't it? It's a brilliant move by Obama.
Obama gets one or two news cycles out of it.
Two gaffe-free news cycles.... no new material for McCain to possibly use.
Obama gets free coverage all across the MSM being shown with his white granny. See all you people on the fence... he's safe... you can vote for him.
Obama's running out the clock on McCain, and there's not a goddamnned thing you can do about it.
Posted by: davelowe | Friday, October 24, 2008 at 06:04 PM
Fuck you, you pig.
Posted by: Carl | Friday, October 24, 2008 at 06:04 PM
Beyond disgusting. I thought it just couldn't get any trashier than the Freedom's Watch guy who said Obama's making this trip was worse than Palin's clothing bill. But even he didn't suggest anything this low. Every day brings me several new reasons to rejoice that you people are going down in flames.
Posted by: forked tongue | Friday, October 24, 2008 at 06:04 PM
What, what an ass you are. You were probably a bully too.
Here's a flash for you. MOST people, even Republicans are decent people. They are about one another, and they usually don't want to see others hurt. However, there are some that are outside the pale of normal people. Like you. Because you disagree with someone politically, you wish his 86 yr old Grandmother ill.
What's wrong with you?
Posted by: a normal person | Friday, October 24, 2008 at 06:05 PM
dan, you really do need to see a therapist. See if your insurance covers it. Maybe you and some of your other cohorts/readers will qualify for a group discount.
Posted by: jaxfldesi | Friday, October 24, 2008 at 06:05 PM
Are you insane? I can't imagine a sane person questioning someone's motives in going to see a dying grandmother.
Posted by: Lori | Friday, October 24, 2008 at 06:06 PM
Dan reading you and your commenters demonstrates why America is giving up on Republicans. The moderates are leaving to party in droves, and only you sick, demented people who can joke about a man's sick grandma are left. The lunatics have clearly taken over the asylum. All I can do is mourn that the conservative movement has come to this.
Posted by: younglady | Friday, October 24, 2008 at 06:06 PM
You are sick. What an awful person you must be.
Posted by: GW | Friday, October 24, 2008 at 06:08 PM
Despicable, but status quo and not surprising coming from a McSame supporter.
Posted by: Omama | Friday, October 24, 2008 at 06:08 PM
Oh, such a sad little article at a sad little site. Guess the word "SUBSTANCE" is lost on you. I shudder to think of all the suffering you'll have to bear for the next eight years :-(! Take a long hard look at the mirror in between these inane blog posts.

What a sewer this site is. All you rats are welcome to it. Dan Reihl is to political discourse what syphilis is to sex.

Hey you with the pillow over her face. a resounding FUCK YOU! I wish you and your family good health so you can see the election returns...
FUCK YOU again.

Oh, wow. I think I just threw up in my mouth after reading this piece of garbage. You're one class act.
Posted by: LeSeagull | Friday, October 24, 2008 at 06:10 PM
Congratulations on getting the shock value. It seems to be the only thing dominating politics nowadays. For comparison, how about Barack and McCain's views on the same issues.
McCain: Opposes constitutional amendment to ban it. Says same-sex couples should be allowed to enter into legal agreements for insurance and similar benefits.
Obama: Opposes constitutional amendment to ban it. Supports civil unions, says states should decide about marriage.
McCain: Supports relaxing federal restrictions on financing of embryonic stem cell research.
Obama: Supports relaxing restrictions on federal financing of embryonic stem cell research
Taxes
McCain: "No new taxes" if elected. Twice opposed Bush's tax cuts, at first because he said they were tilted to the wealthiest and again because of the unknown costs of Iraq war. Now says those tax cuts, expiring in 2010, should be permanent. Proposes cutting corporate tax rate to 25 percent. Promises balanced budget in first term, says that is unlikely in his first year.
Obama: Raise income taxes on wealthiest and their capital gains and dividends taxes. Raise corporate taxes. $80 billion in tax breaks mainly for poor workers and elderly, including tripling Earned Income Tax Credit for minimum-wage workers and higher credit for larger families. Eliminate tax-filing requirement for older workers making under $50,000. A mortgage-interest credit could be used by lower-income homeowners who do not take the mortgage interest deduction because they do not itemize their taxes.
Whatever happened to things like that mattering? Instead this blog is full of comments like "gangster and thug Obama thinks that", "How did Hussein get to Hawaii?", etc. Do you believe, for one second, that either president wants to make this country a worse place? Both men only want to make America great, they just differ on how to do it. Blogs like this fuel the fires of hatred and ignorance, rather then create a forum for intelligent discourse where people explain why they don't like Obama's politics, rather then suggesting murder, calling him "Hussein", and saying he wants to kill Americans.

Yeah, Dan is truly a piece of garbage for this post and many others. Wow. Not to mention, he's an ugly SOB as well. Google "Tor Johnson" and marvel at the resemblance.

This blog is terrific - what a window into the complete and total bankruptcy of the connservative movement in this country. I feel for guys like Buckley and Sullivan that their movement's been taken over by mouthbreaters like Dan. I'm going to come back on election day and laugh at you idiots as you and your special brand of ignorance fades into oblivion. By the way, cut back on the meth, North Dallas Thirty, you sound as unhinges as your sister up in Pittsburgh, Ashley Todd.

I don't know your blog sir, but if you are a decent human being - and I have no reason to doubt that you are - I think you'll come to regret the pillow smothering line, whether or not you intended it as a joke (hard to tell from reading it).
Political disagreement (even of a virulent nature) is all well and good, but when we start suggesting with seriousness, or in jest, that a candidate would murder his grandmother to get a bump in the polls then the line between passionate discourse and hateful rhetoric (as well as the line between moral and immoral behavior) has clearly been crossed.
We ought not stoop to the level of a bratty teenager who takes pleasure in, exploits, and generally feels no regard for the pain of others. The woman who raised Obama is dying and he deserves our sympathy as a result, just as you (or anyone else whether I know them or not) would have my sympathy if one of your relatives was very ill. No matter how much you dislike him as a politician, he does not deserve your BS speculation about how he might kill his grandma.
Act like a grown up for God's sake, and consider the fact that had you said something like this when you were a 12 year old, your mother would have given you a spanking.

conservatives, keep it up, with attitudes like this, you guys are entering the long dark ages for your party. Thank the goddess, it's about time.
But there is at least one honest republican (click name to see...)
Who could it be?

Hold a pillow against her face? If your grandparents are dead their rolling in their graves, and the police should be investigating your whereabouts when they died. If their alive, well they must be so proud of their offspring. What a classy, and honorable guy you are.

Yawn. As someone who's chronicled Democrat Party members and Obama supporters (http://northdallasthirty.blogspot.com/search?q=SIDS) praying for a conservative woman's baby to get SIDS, I'm not buying all the shrieking from these trolls -- because they certainly can't find it in them to discipline each other for hateful statements directly made about someone's family.
Posted by: North Dallas Thirty | Friday, October 24, 2008 at 06:25 PM
I used to read your blog every day, Dan, but posts like this are the reason I don't come here anymore. This is seriously DISGUSTING. How dare you?
