Bumped and Updated: A Potentially Disastrous Number For Obama

Update: Yeah, saw this - embarassing for Obama. Won't make you like his campaign very much, that's for sure.

On Fox News this morning Obama spokesperson Bill Burton dismissed concerns over alienating older voters due to the Obama campaign's decision to play the age card against John McCain in this year's election. Meanwhile, Obama already trails McCain by nearly triple the margin Kerry lost Seniors to Bush in 2004.

According to CNN, in 2004 Kerry lost the Senior vote to Bush by the following margins:

60 and Older: Kerry -7  / (24% of electorate)

65 and Older: Kerry -5 / (16% of electorate)

Today the AP has this as their campaign "stat of the day."

John McCain leads Barack Obama by 23 points among rural voters and by 13 points with voters age 65 and over, according to an AP-GfK Poll of likely voters.

And that's mostly before the "he doesn't use a computer" ad has really started to play.

Maybe they're following the Beckel strategy?

Palin Doesn't Matter, Numbers Do

Not to get morbid but there is another statistic that is working against the Republicans. The Center for Disease Control estimates there have been, on average, 2.5 million deaths in America each year since 2005, the overwhelming number of whom were 65 years and older. Since it is generally conceded that John McCain will win the over 65 vote the actuarial tables present a problem. But you say millions have turned 65 since 2004. Correct, but among the people who were 61-64 in 2004 the vote split evenly between Kerry and Bush.

Democrats have been promising to win elections on the backs of new young voters for years and this year could be when they actually break through, also supported by an expected increase in African American turn-out. But alienating Seniors to the extent Obama seems to be doing could undercut those potential gains.

I really don't think that there is such a crush of younger voters (the 18-25 bracket) as everyone makes it out to be (otherwise, Ron Paul would have been the GOP nominee)...

...most people in the college age bracket definitely trend much further to the left than in recent generations, and are much more easily controlled by pop culture and mass media on the whole. Yet, despite all the marketing done by Obama and MoveOn and that whole lot, I somehow think that election day will find the average student busily toking a bowl or slugging back brews more than voting, much less actively campaigning, donating, and serving a given political cause.

It is the retiring Baby-Boomers who have historically been left of centre as group who are aging into the seniors, though the leading edge (the 1945-1955 age cohort especially) of Boomers en masse, have moved toward a centre or centre-right view of things: not entirely unlike where McCain's message is hitting at.

And the War Babies/Silent Generation?

Most seniors I know (and I know a good plenty) up here in NY - a very, very, very blue state - are definitely leaning toward McCain-Palin.

As for the youth vote, we'll see what happens there. They certainly came out for Obama during the primaries.

Thinking that only 65 years and older are offended by the Obama "Email" ad is unrealistic. I have three 30-somethings in my home, none who use email, all who were angry at the ad, whereas my Mother, before she died at 94, was a computer whiz and loved the connection having email gave her. BTW, I am a "CHARTER BOOMER," and until I got started reading blogs, I didn't know any lefties or even left leaners. A particular neighbour of mine, who was quite a salty FDR/Truman Democrat from Brooklyn, and had voted Democrat for the bulk of his nearly 70 year life told me he registered Republican recently. And most of his poker club seem to be on the McCain bandwagon (albeit not enthusiastically, but certainly not likely to vote for the young'un from the Chicago slime machine).

Bob Barr is currently likely to have his LP nomination revoked due to snubbing Ron Paul (among other things, like having been in bed with the CIA and the NeoCons during the early part of Bush'43's term).

The obama campaign is almost cult like. Originally I was really gung ho really involved, making phone calls, giving my $25 every time the asked but then barack started to change his tune. Now he is in some instances looking more conservative than John McCain. This worries me because a lot of Obama supporters say different things about what his policies are and the campaign seems to be fine with some many "barack plans" out there, many of whom, are sadly contradictory.

Voters in the college age, twenty something group, (my friends) are even refusing to listen to anything McCain has to say. Even when I point out inconsistencies with Obama. That is what we all should be worrying about.

A complete review of systems was unremarkable. On physical examination, his blood pressure was 90/60 and pulse 60/minute. His build was lean and muscular with no excess body fat. His physical examination was completely normal.

Laboratory studies included triglycerides of 44(normal under 150), cholesterol 173 (normal under 200), HDL 68 (normal over 40), and LDL 96 (normal under 130). Chem 24, urinalysis and CBC were normal, PSA was 0.6, very good. An EKG was normal.

In short, his examination showed him to be in excellent health. Senator Barack Obama is in overall good physical and mental health needed to maintain the resiliency required in the Office of President.
