Blogs of War has a good round-up of blogger reax. He'd still be with McCain and I understand his points. Problem is, it would so de-motivate a critical portion of the base McCain needs - I honestly believe the issue would be moot. It would end up Obama hands down due to McCain's poor choice and lack of respect for a significant portion of the Republican base.
If he can't respect them, why should they respect him as a candidate for President? Actually, it would be more than a lack of respect for them he'd be demonstrating - contempt might be a better word at this point.

Dafydd nailed it when he said:
For months now, various yahoos have offered wild guesses as to who John S. McCain will name as his running mate. Generally, the putative "inside information" seems more designed to freak out Republicans and send them running around in circles with their hair on fire... sort of like Homer Simpson at a typical Simpson barbecue (if Homer had hair, that is).
Nameless wretches have variously suggested Joe Lieberman, Rudy Giuliani, Tom Ridge, Lincoln Chafee (whose middle name is Davenport, aptly enough), or that woman who claims Don Siegelman was railroaded. At each new and increasingly bizarre claim, more and more Republicans froth at the mouth, chew broken bottles, and bay at the moon.
I think I'll wait to find out who the VP is before I start shrieking.

Because it is imperative to not offend the whine-o-holics in the anti-choice wing of the party or they'll... what? Vote Democrat? Let's face it, the mandatory baby brigade isn't going to vote for an openly pro-choice Democrat and they're too politically active to sit home for a Presidential race. They'll do a great deal of screaming into the wind, but at the end of the day they'll line up like good little sheep and pull the lever for McCain no matter who he picks for Veep.
The Republican Party has proven time and time again that they can get their loyal base to turn out no matter what they do. Run two disastrous wars? Double the national debt? Preside over the biggest national security failure in US History? Fail to overturn Roe v. Wade with six solid years in the majority? Who cares!
McCain doesn't have to worry about his base. He never did. But every step he takes away from pro-choice independents drives up his negatives among women and the poor. Every fundie wanna-be Pope ring he kisses drives away another chunk of secular conservatives. And this in an election cycle when abortion rights barely registers on the political radar.
If he picks a strong, independent fiscal conservative - a Lieberman or a Bloomberg - he might have a chance in November. If he goes running off to court the I-hate-women block of the party, he's just that much more sunk.

"anti-choice"...?
I guess that makes you baby-killers who like Barrack Hussein "Just leave the fetus-blob-thingy in the janitor's closet, it'll die eventually" Obama into the "anti-life" brigade.
Next up: Forced Euthanasia for cripples, retards, and old folks over 65. And maybe... just maybe... Robbie Byrd might get his way and put those pesky J00s and nigras under the steel needle of cold release as well.
Ah, Maggie Sanger 's corpse must be gurgling with glee at the thought.

Tom Ridge just might guarantee a victory for John McCain, but it looks like Republicans prefer purity of mind and would rather see Obama as president. I think that is called cutting off your nose to spite your face.
