McCain Trumps Obama Race Card Play

When Obama was going against Hillary, I suggested here that his instincts to deploy the race card when he finds himself challenged could come back to haunt him in the Fall. And if you've read the recent Standard item by Stanley Kurtz, Barack Obama's Lost Years, you'll get a sense of how race-centric Obama was in his early political career. That may help explain his tendency to "go there."

Unfortunately for Obama, according to Rasmussen's latest, the American people aren't buying it. If, as Kurtz details, Obama depended on race as a pivotal theme during his time in Chicago, he may find himself scrambling for effective campaign tactics that help and don't hurt him with the majority of Americans down the stretch.

Sixty-nine percent (69%) of the nation’s voters say they’ve seen news coverage of the McCain campaign commercial that includes images of Britney Spears and Paris Hilton and suggests that Barack Obama is a celebrity just like them. Of those, just 22% say the ad was racist while 63% say it was not.

However, Obama’s comment that his Republican opponent will try to scare people because Obama does not look like all the other presidents on dollar bills was seen as racist by 53%. Thirty-eight percent (38%) disagree.

I'm not sure that anyone was suggesting the "celebrity" ad was racist, just asinine. I'm thinking Obama should respond with his own add about celebrity with pictures of Betty White and Bea Arthur.

Just a thought. If I heard this question and thought it meant "Because he is black, Obama said his opponent will try to scare people," I would think that was a racist comment, because it suggests that Obama cannot help but play the victim, because that's what black people do. That may explain why 44% of African-Americans found the comment racist.

Gergen wasn't talking about the celebrity ad, he was talking about the Charlton Heston ad and some of the code that the McCain campaign is using...I have to say I agree that there are certainly efforts being made to paint Obama as the "Other"...why the insistance of always using his middle name by McCain surrogates? Or referring to him as "exotic" or his wife as his "baby-mama" or the "terrorist fist jab"? Race is playing into this campaign and Obama isn't the one who started it.

Although there is a big difference from the black majority vote of his home districts in IL (not that his US senate run in deep blue IL was ever in danger of loss) and the wider, and whiter, and probably red-state-ier breadth of the American populace.

That said, I'll say that McCain is just as much of a tool for playing along.

There are much better candidates to choose from, if only we could shake ourselves of our crack-like addiction to the two (completely useless) major parties.

Dr. Chuck Baldwin is a very good pick, or for those who like a more libertarian pick, there's Bob Barr.

I like Dr. Baldwin as he seems closest to the mix of conservatism and liberty-loving principles of Dr. Ron Paul.

Well, I don't much care for the man, (Bob Barr, that is) that and also because of his previous support for certain parts of the NeoCon agenda ... but he'd be a good pick for those of y'all of a libertarian bent who are put off by Dr. Baldwin's outright stand for Christianity (he is a pastor after all), even though he really isn't making a campaign issue out of it, and as far as I can tell, Dr. Baldwin will maintain a strict interpretation of the Establishment Clause.
