History doesn't care one way or the other, but Obama cared enough to lie about it for the purposes of giving a speech. The senator from Illinois has his own tales to live down as well. For example, during a speech in 2002 Obama gave us a heart-rending story of his grandfather's service in uniform during World War II.

"My grandfather signed up for a war the day after Pearl Harbor was bombed, fought in Patton's army," stated Obama.

"He saw the dead and dying across the fields of Europe; he heard the stories of fellow troops who first entered Auschwitz and Treblinka. He fought in the name of a larger freedom, part of that arsenal of democracy that triumphed over evil, and he did not fight in vain."

All this would be great if it weren't pure fiction. For starters, the Nazis destroyed the Treblinka death camp in 1943 after shooting the last prisoners, a group of Jewish girls.

Then there is the problem of the locations of Treblinka and Auschwitz. Both Nazi death camps were located inside Poland. Thus, no American troops ever entered the camps until years after the war was over.

Auschwitz was taken by the Soviet Union after the Nazis evacuated most of the prisoners. The retreating Nazis left those too weak or sick to walk behind. The 322nd Rifle Division of the Red Army liberated them on Jan. 27 1945.

So unless Obama's Grandfather was working for Joe Stalin, liberating Europe in a Soviet Army uniform, he was not likely to hear stories about Auschwitz or Treblinka from his fellow soldiers.

OK...in five minutes of digging on google, it appears that the if Obama is correct now, the camp in question should be the Ohrdruf subcamp of Buchenwald. The president of the 89th infantry gave the following report below...My reading is unless Obama’s GREAT UNCLE was part of the recon group, he did not liberate the camp. The 89th infantry was only there for a short time, hours actually, and then turned it over to the 335th infantry. Military folks will be able to dig deeper than me, but just like in Obama’s books, much of what he says just seems to be made up. Of course, his message is what is important, not truth.

The story now shifts to the 89th Recon Troop, a platoon leader of which sent me the following account. “My 2nd Platoon was reconnoitering ahead of the infantry regiment (355th) on that day and we came upon this complex and two German soldiers who were guarding the front gates. We shot and killed one, and the other ran off. Setting up a modest defense, we entered the compound and saw first hand the horror of life in a Nazi concentration camp. We radioed our troop headquarters for instructions and were told to remain there, keeping the inmates contained (this was hardly necessary, as most were in their bunks, hardly able to walk) while HQ contacted the infantry to relieve us. In less than three hours, the infantry (3rd Battalion, 355th Inf) arrived and we were sent on a new mission”. Lastly, another member of our society who was in the 3rd Battalion of the 354th Infantry, advised me that shortly after the 355th Infantry took over the camp, the 3rd Battalion of the 354th replaced the 355th, also for only a short time. During these days, the 355th Infantry in its entirety had apparently been attached to the 4th Armored Division. All of this helps explain why both the 89th Division and the 4th Armored Division have been credited with liberation the Ohrdruf Concentration Camp.

Many Americans might have problems distinguishing Buchenwald and Ohrdruf from Auschwitz. But should we not expect more from a Harvard-educated presidential candidate? Is it too much to ask that an aspiring commander-in-chief knows (1) that Auschwitz (like many of the other Nazi death camps) is in Poland, and (2) that the eastern advance of the U.S. Army in World War II stopped on the river Elbe? I'm sure that WPE will be among those tapped by Obama (or more specifically, the Democraticic Bully Machine) to join its bully boys out slashing GOP van tyres and breaking the arms of GOP volunteers.

If this sort of thing keeps up, we might as well start looking to Zimbabwe and Mugabe as our examples of how the Democraticic Party does things.
