You need to re-read the constitution. The constitution does not guarantee the rights of anyone unborn. The 14th amendment was cited in Blackmun's majority opinion.

Hillary's not about to mount an independent campaign for president. There's no positives in it. She'd lose, she'd piss off a large portion of the Democratic base, and it would end any hopes she might have of running again in 4 / 8 years. Additionally, there's not a huge difference between the positions of the two.

There's a bigger chance, though still unlikely, that Ron Paul would bolt the Republican party and run as an independent. He has real differences with McSame / McBush and thinks the Republican Party has abandoned it's core principles.

That's a powerful long time. I've considered shifting a good portion of my portfolio to gold and silver, grain futures, maybe some oil futures, and the rest to either European or Japanese indexes... although the Japanese market has been sputtering lately. The Aussie and NZ markets appear to be humming right along though, although not phenomenally so. I guess I better do whatever fiddling I need to do before Hillbama takes over and jacks up my capital gains rate to 65%.

I was in Japan for the last few weeks and have just returned. One of the big news stories there was that a major Japanese Restaurant Chain is giving up use of American beef because the supplier wasn't being careful enough about supplying meat certified to be free of Mad Cow ...

The way the story was carried made it pretty obvious to the Japanese (at least the people I was with) that American beef may not be safe and that there's good reason not to buy it.

Yeah, we went over this one ad nauseum yesterday. USDA doesn't want to sell test kits to this one exporter because since 2006 there have been three cases of spongiform in the US. Yeah, THREE.... It cannot be discovered in younger beef which is what is normally used in the market. We aren't shipping milk, we're shipping steaks and hamburger. So it's pretty much another red herring.

It's more likely that big beef packers - Iowa Beef - doesn't want any additional testing and are pressuring the government to stop it before it gets out of hand.

Strangely, searching Japanese papers I could find no reference to this story.......There are several in US papers though.

You really think the USDA actually cares if some little boutique company reinspects their beef? Probably not. But big packers do, because it could get real expensive for them if consumers get sold on the idea of more inspections. And there's a lot of other bad stuff that can be found in beef than Mad Cow.

Right. The suit was about rather USDA would sell the testing kits to the packer. They said "no, no need in it. Out of over 600,000 head tested, only three, older cows had it". It is younger beef that is used for food and the tests dont work on them. You must kill the cow to do the test and like most other things, the packer can buy the kits on the open market where they cost more and do their own testing. The question involved spongiform testing. Had nothing to do with e-coli or anything else. Those are different tests and frankly I've learned far more about Mad Cow than I ever wanted to know, so please, feel free to look it up yourself.

I'll have to ask Mrs. Seeker on this one... can't say that I've followed the beef ban news much, but last I heard, the ban was lifted in October of 2006.

I know the Koreans had some heartache over it within the past year or so, but not a peep from the Japanese (and they are by far the fussiest over beef quality).

I seem to recall that the original beef item in 2001 was a Japanese election year item as well, with Koizumi then running for Prime Minister.

I sure wish we had someone with his head screwed on straight like "Jun-chan" running for POTUS this year with half a serious chance of winning.

Jeez Wahoo. I can't believe you actually buy that BS line from the USDA. I'm sure you're familiar with the 'follow the money' line. Well, in this case, it leads straight to be agribusiness. They've been pressuring the USDA to cut back on it's testing.
